If the Cs don't give Avery Bradley a qualifying offer I think they'll have 17 or 18 mil in cap space. Rondo is as good of a sidekick as Melo could hope for at this point, he's not going to be able to join James or whoever and still get paid. Along with a high draft pick and the bounty headed the C's way from hopefully bad future Net squads Ainge could have a strong case to make.

I won't die if he leaves, we'll be able to tank next year, then have all our cap space after next year and the year after. People always says Brooklyn for Durant for some reason, but they have Deron + probably Blatche and maybe Lopez. We'd have Hardaway, Shump, other pick and that's it. We'd literally be able to sign a star in 2015 if anyone is there, if not go shortterm and say Durant + whoever the **** wants to come the next year, etc. Or get no one and do a true rebuild with no salaries on the books.

It's not the end of the world. What would be the end of the world would be trading now for long term money and him leaving, which we'd be ****ed, or trading him for long term money that isn't stars, which would kill any rebuild via free agency.

I still think the Heat situation is ridiculous for him, people wanted to argue Lebron was a sidekick, silly as it was, but that was for historical reasons (not putting him GOAT list vs. putting him). If Melo wins a title with Lebron he'd literally get no credit at all.

Rose, Noah, Taj, Butler, Dunleavy, and Snell would be the only players under contract. They also still have their first round pick, and the Bobcats (top 10 protected).

Chicago definitely seems like the landing spot if he doesn't stay with NY. It wouldn't require much for Chicago to sign him outright, although a sign and trade would probably have to happen for Chicago to build a bench (and for Melo to get the biggest paycheck)
