6 participants. Each person has one chance to do one dunk, make or miss. That's it. Point system by judges after each participant's dunk. If everyone misses, no one wins and they deserved to be embarrassed on national tv for not practicing. NBA needs to grow some balls.

Just 1 dunk by each player? Hell no that'd make it worse. I wanna see atleast 2-3 from each player

Easy fix to the whole night:
Drop the host crap. I bet next year we're going to get Ryan Seacrest.
Drop the concert. This isn't the Super Bowl don't make it bigger than it is. It was quick too, so it was just filler to kill time.
Focus on the players, and invite more to it like an Olympics kind of thing. Ultimately, the fans just want to see the players compete. They don't give a shit about all of the ads, celebrities, forced humor, and stupid format changes. It would get the fans more involved in rooting for the players that represent their favorite team.

Here's an idea...how about just go back to the original format?

There has to be requirements. Perhaps at least 1 all star appearance or a certain resume of dunks? It should be an honor to be in the dunk contest, and a great achievement to actually win it.
It feels like random scrubs just called up by the league office because nobody actually wants to do it.

For what? Very rarely does any one player ever have 2 good dunks in the same contest.
You give them your best dunk and walk off. Better than seeing 2 good dunks and 20 misses in between.

here's an idea:
ban props and don't give a player 4 million attempts. then get superstars to join the contest and have a judge that isn't dominique, magic or dr. j and bring back the scores

I have a good idea for next year.
Get the same competitors as this year, and just do the contest again in the old format.

Lol this.
the dunk contest was never a problem. participants were. if this year's lineup had the old rules, it would've been great.

They've always had a host (I say always as in recent years.) Kenny Smith would usually be the guy, an in-house guy.
And the SuperBowl didn't always have music performs. 1993 was the first with Michael Jackson. And this is not the first time they've had music performers at the show.
And how many more players do you want? Rookie-Sophomre players, Shooting Stars players, Skills Challenge players, 3 Point players, Dunk players and the All-Star game players. That is about 50 players.

1 million dollar reward in cold hard cash.
The league office agrees to pay off any child support for the winning player.

The NBA would easily have the biggest anticipated dunk contest since Vince Carter won it if they would just stick with the original format or keep it similar and LeBron would agree to do it.

Yah but Nick Cannon? Like I said, Ryan Seacrest will be the host next year. It felt more like American Idol than a basketball competition.
The point is that the music part is just filler. They don't even put on a show. It was like 1 song between two commercial breaks. It was a pee break for me.
Maybe the events are fine, but we're so overwhelmed with forced humor, ads, and format changes every year, it gets away from basketball. What's wrong with just having 6-10 guys competing against each other in a dunk contest?

Easy:
- Bring back old format (semis then finals)
- Bring back judges holding up numbers
- Ban gimmicks
- Max 3 attempts
- Invite LBJ, Griffin, Westbrook, Paul George
- What the hell, invite Gerald Green too (because he can fly)

That's what I've been saying. We don't need Nick Canon, a rap concert, or any of the other filler non-sense.
I have the same problem with the super bowl. Enough with all of the pop culture shit.

Exactly. I can understand the Super Bowl because it's Half Time, but here it's like 1 song surrounded by two commercial breaks. It's so forced.

Screw trying to get LeBron! Just go back to the old format and point system.
Only players allowed are the top dunkers or players that have proven themselves to be great dunkers. Maybe if their scrubs make them send video tape of them dunking before they can enter.

See I'm kinda confused. Who really won? It seemed more like a team thing. What is "dunker of the night"?
It would've been great to see Ross, PG, and Wall duke it out. I wanted to see more of Lillard also. Dude got ups!

They should make it how it was back in 1984 huh, get em in and get em out right.
That's what happens when things start getting bigger. As Damon Wayans would say "Mo Money, Mo Money, Mo Money."
In 1984, NBA Saturday Night consisted of an old Timers game and a dunk contest, that's about one hour of programing, I'm assuming compared to over 7 that includes events Friday and Saturday (not including the Sunday game.)
The NBA is making tons of money of these commercials, adds, music guest and host.

Fans vote = automatic victory. I don't even think they release the exact numbers or percentages, so it could very easily be rigged.

I'm not against having a host but at least get a better one. Nick Cannon added nothing to the event, some random fan from the crowd would have probably been better.
Though I don't blame Nick Cannon, just whoever hired him. "Keep gettin' dem checks" Nick.

Make it an KO-tournament. I remember watching old contests and there was one, I think '90, where 10 or 12 guys participated that leaves a higher chance for good dunks.
Maybe make a deadline on Jan 15th and every projected playoff team has to send a player and do a KO-playoff format. So 1st seed sends a dunker vs 8th seed.
2 dunks each duell, miss the dunk no 2nd chance. Combined score counts. 5 judges 0-10 points each.
Make bigger rewards for the teams and players individually:
Dunk contest winning team gets the tie breaker against any team for example. Teams would make sure they send their best dunker.
Fans of teams who could care less about the contest would root for their guy simple, because it helps the team in the bigger picture.
Individual winner gets a first place MVP vote or something like that. Might sound stupid, because guys like Gerald Green might get a first place vote, other greats never got, but it might also get guys like Lebron joining.

6 players, 3 rounds, 2 dunks per round with 1 replacement dunk each round. 2 players eliminated in round 1 & round 2, final round between 2 players and the highest total score wins. That's all they need to do. No East vs West, no stupid freestyle. Just let each player get his.

The max of 3 dunks was perfect, but I didn't understand why they let Paul George do another dunk after he already failed to do a dunk in 3 tries. If you put rules out, then they should enforce them.

The original format was fine, just limit misses allowed to one per dunk, and limit the amount of props, each guy gets to use a prop for one dunk if they want
