View Full Version : the reason why the dunk contest has gone to shit
i think the slam dunk contest has gone to shit because every single dunk has been done already, there's nothing more you can really do. if they want to make it interesting, players should have to incorporate trick moves (i.e. flips, cartwheels, backflips) in their dunks now so they can be at least entertaining.
another idea since the nba likes to have so many point guards is, players can use a trampoline in one of their rounds and have to do at least 2 full flips to score a perfect 50.

if lebron ever joined the slam dunk contest he would win with ease. since it's fan voting, and lebron will have the most fans.

Also because we don't get to enjoy just plain old dunks. MJ and Carter didn't need props and forced gimmicks. God forbid having 6-10 players (some being stars hopefully) competing and being judged by judges that are not NBA legends who are being nice.
The Magic comment about the dunk contest being back was... :facepalm

they reall need lebron and more stars instead of scrubs
there are more dunks but it's probably too hard for ppl who dont dedicate their lives to dunking

We need a dunk contest matchup of:
Lebron James vs
DeAndre Jordan vs
John Wall vs
Dwight Howard vs
Gerald Green
That would be the goat dunk contest.

i agree. they had 3 legends, two from the east and one from the west. every time they would choose they would be like "uhh well, since I'm from east..." nigha, keep it as unbiased as possible you retard son of a bitch.

You guys are really unimaginative.
"Everything's been done already!"
1. Hold the contest outdoors
2. Have a player skydive and parachute off a plane
3. Said player dunks it
1. Put a sharktank in between the freethrow line and hoop
2. enjoy
1. Guest appearance by Kim Jong Un
2. player dunks over him
Has any of this ever been done before? No it hasn't.

Pretty much this. The dunk contest used to feature the best players in the league. Jordan, Dominique, Dr J, Kobe, Vince, etc, etc. It needs star power to make it intriguing.
As long as Lebron, as the best player in the league and one of the top dunkers in the game, remains scared to do it, it's gonna remain boring.

This speaks for the whole thing. Like Nick Cannon hosting and a quick rap concert. It's so forced. Just give people what they want... players doing basketball stuff.

The crowd was so damn dead though. Tupac and MJ (geared up and ready to dunk) could have walked onto the court and there wouldn't have been a reaction :wtf:
Seriously speaking, I think that the format screwed over this dunk contest. In previous years it was bad because there were no stars. We got them this year. But the format killed it. The first round looked like a warmup

it was like this last year in houston too. even in the asg you could hear crickets until someone dunked it. even when players were making 3 pointers, fancy shots no one cheered.

I'm not sure if it's the cities or if people are just not into this event anymore. I mean the NBA has killed the Dunk Contest so much that less and less people are going to go or tune in.

The time between the 3 point contest and the dunk contest was longer than the dunk contest itself. I'm thinking any casual viewers they had turned the channel. There is no reason this event needs to be 3 hours. It should be 2 hours only.
Then the payoff this year was complete shit. This format as a whole was the worst. It ruined the dunk contest. Last year was fine with the 6 players and multiple rounds, but 1 set dunk each is terrible. Pisses me off that they finally got it right last year in terms of format, and then they do this conference shit with the stupid free style portion. :facepalm

This is my dream line-up in a dunk contest
Lebron
KD
GOATbrook
George
Wall
With the old format, of course. 2 dunks per round, you are allowed to mess up once per round.
KD is very explosive and I think he could pull off some explosive dunks, GOATbrook easily one of the best PG dunkers ever, Wall is explosive as hell and George & Lebron would probably face off in the final round.

I agree with everything. Same thing with the All-Star game. Why do we need this conference West Vs East shit? Why can't it just be the best players get picked or something? It's not like people actually get involved and brag over their conference winning the events.

The 1 set dunk isnt that bad though. In reality it was rare for contestants to have more than 1 or two good dunks even back in the day.

dwight howard did that for one of his dunks, he finished it with ease. he should have raised it to 14 feet.

It takes each player about 4 dunks to have 1 of them being good. 1 dunk each means less likely that they pull off a nice dunk.
And what about the players capable of multiple good dunks. Imagine how gypped we would be if the next Vince Carter comes along, but we have no idea of his dunk contest greatness because he only gets 1 dunk? Can you imagine if Vince himself only had 1 dunk in 2000 if they had came up with this horrible idea earlier?
If the dunkers suck, then so be it. But lets at least give them the opportunity to show off what they have. Less dunks means less memorable dunks on the whole.

Watch it yourself. It was not a 12 ft rim. BTW, his highest single jump, on sports science, and with one hand, reached 12' 6 ". Now you tell me how he would have dunked a 10" round ball over a 12 ft rim, with a leap of 12' 6".

yea the first round should be a free for all where the guy gets a certain amount of time to just play around and do some of his dunks and then they pick who advances and go on to 'hard dunks.'
All of that shit where you get 10 tries to do a dunk... nah, or that only the makes count... nah. Dudes dunk for 3 minutes or whatever and everything they show counts. Then they can have something tighter once everyone figures out who the crowd and judges want to see. lol it's like stand up comedy, if someone had to come out and just deliver a hilarious joke... more often than not, they would fail. But if they have some time to warm up and get everything interested in their style, then it would work.
