View Full Version : Why are European NBA players more well spoken than American players?

Watching the Grantland interviews with Simmons.
Im stunned how much more interesting it was to listen to Dirk Nowitzki than it was listening to Kevin Durant.
Usually European players in other sports are boring as hell. But the Euro NBA players. Nowitzki, Parker, Gasol brothers, Kobe Bryant(grew up in Europe) etc. sound like a intelligent lot.

I can't speak for all of them, but a lot of other countries sports bodies put them through media training and they are generally more mature as they haven't grown up in a culture that worships talented young basketballers.

Durant's interview was fine. He was just stupid and called himself the servant :facepalm

They probably speak the language more formally, because they learned it as second language, and/or didn't grow up hearing as much slang. In addition to that, many European countries also have better public school systems than the U.S.

Look at Giannis Antetokonumpo's blog posts. They are likely translated (not sure on this) but even if so the source material in Greek is pretty damn well written.

This. That said, when it comes to other European players, the fact a lot of them played professionally before coming over to the NBA does play a role.

Why would it be translated? His brother writes all his own stuff on his blogs and twitter and it's usually in almost perfect English.
You do realize that English is just a basic thing to learn in Greece right? Just the same as Greek is? You learn Greek and English as a basic standard.
So learning a THIRD language, not a second language, is the additional educational language.
So people would know Greek and English, then they would choose a third language to learn, like usually something like Italian.

further to this studies have shown people who are taught two languages (like most european countries do) while growing up tend to be more intelligent and articulate when they are older. It also makes it far easier for them to learn a third language.

It's not just the NBA thing though. And yeah, there is a bit of a underlying racial tone here since we all think black when speaking of NBA players.
Americans in general nowadays don't seem nearly as intelligent as Europeans or Australians. It's just how it is. The rest of the world has simply surpassed America in a lot of ways.

Apparently.
KD is just shy I think. But someone like Lebron, yeah, he sounds like he's speaking a completely different language from the one I speak. I think it's mostly to do with disliking white culture and not wanting to conform. Proper English is "speaking white" to them, so they have created their own form of the English language. I don't really blame guys like Lebron for that either, because that's what they were taught and grew up with so that's why they never attempted to learn to speak "proper" English.

Those players moved continents to make a living and became relevant characters in a part of the world totally different to theirs. They have a solid background, they learned a language, they met a bunch of different people, different cultures... that has made them what they are. They have matured into the world.
Others are making millions of dollars and yet can't book their own plane tickets or cook an egg.
Then there's culture and all, Americans rank amongst the most ignorant people in the world providing their rent per capita and the easy access they have to education. I don't think anyone needs a link to the thousand of studies ridiculing the general knowledge in USA (the most revealing one the one you guys took part in, voting Bush twice)

Comparatively to their contemporaries, British Empire, Roman Empire, Mongol Empire and various China, India (Mughal Empire for example) and Middle Eastern powers could be compared to USA of today in terms of military power and wealth. Some of them in fact shit on it.

I have also noticed the more ghetto a basketball or football team is, the tougher they are.
Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett sound normal when talking to White people. But when they're on the Celtics with ghetto players like Kendrick Perkins, Tony Allen, James Posey. They turn into scary n*ggas.
Celtics put fear into opponents. You can see it when they played Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat. Wade, Odom, Artest would always have that ready to fight look.

It's hard to find to find an article on GOAT nations. I will need to do more research on that and I may not have the time. I don't want to belabor the point since this is a basketball forum, but has there ever been a country or empire that has had the global reach of the US? Technology has so advanced that our culture and products have dominated the every corner of the world up to today. Militarily, has there ever been a nation or empire that has gone unchallenged militarily since the end of the collapse of the USSR?
Even Rome didn't know that China was as powerful on the other side of the world. Economically, has there ever been a country or empire that has enjoined the affluence for it's ordinary citizens like America?
I submit to you that it is , at the very least, arguable to say that the US is the most powerful nation of all time.

It depends on if we're comparing countries in specific eras, for example, any country that has even 100 ak47s is more powerful than almost all ancient armies, but if were talking power relative to its peers than I'd argue a few nations have had a larger power gap, especially if we date back to invention of ironsmithing. Similarly, economically is difficult because until recently it was fairly rare to give half a shit about anyone who was below the ruling class/family.
As for the bolded, absolutely, sorry for coming off as a dick in the first post, it's definitely a discussion worth having and an argument could easily be made for Murica

Not sure if the US are the most powerful nation of all time - its predecessor the British Empire was arguably more powerful, to start with... but it's probably the most benevolent empire in history (relative to changing variables like world population etc.). The bad stuff it's done has really been quite benign compared to other historical superpowers. The balance sheet is looking good so far.
If the US ever falls, I'm almost 100% certain people in the future will marvel at what was achieved in that era. Although the average American was and still is quite ignorant due to a poor formal education system (compensated by an exceptional "informal" one), the level of technological progress that came from the US is almost miraculous and its cultural and artistic achievement in such a short period of time compares very well to the most sophisticated civilisations in history - everything from Hollywood and pop culture to high literature has a distinctive aesthetic and appeal that will stand the test of time. It's better than what the Romans brought compared to the Greeks.

There appears to be quite a few extremely smug foreign posters on this board. Your lack of tact and class amazes me. On a board which is predominantly composed of U.S. citizens you have absolutely no problem recklessly generalizing them and spewing insults at them. Some of the criticisms directed at Americans in this thread may have some truth to them but the value of your argument is completely lost when it is done in such an ill-conceived, snobbish fashion.

The US doesn't even have the wealthiest "ordinary citizens" right now let alone throughout history. America is not in top 5 right now.
And no. America is not the most powerful nation/empire of all time. Not even in the discussion. It's the British empire by a landslide.
I mean, Jesus Christ dude. Read a book from time to time.

Excellent post and I do agree wholeheartedly. It's those reasons and many others why I have always loved the USA.
Just one question, what exactly you mean by informal education?
Guys that change the world like Steve Jobs, Dell, Bill Gates and that Facebook founder were college dropouts. I think that what he meant .

Yeah. There's something in the culture (entrepreneurial spirit, myth fo the American dream etc.) and all the small life experiences Americans get exposed to early that tends to make them good students in the "school of life".
And Euroleague, you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. The orders of Rome? Really? Of all places? Your grasp of international affairs is impressive. What's the conspiracy theory here? You think the Pope is somehow pulling the strings behind everything?

:facepalm
He's not talking about conspiracies. Jeez. Do you people know anything? The center of the majority of the worlds monetary system is run through European banking districts, such as the City of London (a small city state within London) and the Vatican/Rome is also somewhat of a banking capital.
Saying this is a conspiracy is like saying Hollywood is the media capital is a conspiracy. Certain businesses are concentrated in certain places. Banking = European capitals. :hammerhead:

Yeah, so ignorant that the America has become the richest and most powerful country in world history. Really ignorant.
Meanwhile, except for Germany, Europe as a whole has staggered increasingly into irrelevance.
so how do you explain that every major american City has Ghettos who are more dangerous than Cites like Bagdad??
or that every year 30000 Americans kill each other with fire weapons??
or that u didnt even have a health care for people who arent rich since like 2 years ago??:coleman: :coleman:

Did you even read the link from Forbes? The US is the only Superpower left today since the collapse of the USSR. There is no question about that. The US has been the most powerful, at least since the end of WW2.
World history? It's arguable. How do you compare the might of Britain and Rome vs. America? Lots of variables. I don't have the time to argue with you about this right now, but I guarantee you that IT IS ARGUABLE, and you would lose.

Yet, as has already been pointed out, the major control of the world banking system is based in London..........the same world banking system which ACTUALLY controls the world.
The world is controlled through the world monetary banking system. You must be a real tool to not know that. Oh yeah, yeah, it's actually the US military, or US Congress running things right................
PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Any clown knows damn well that Wall Street and corporations run things. And that power is largely based in, as was pointed out by NumberSix, The City of London.
FACT.
Not a "FACT".
Not the thing you are referring to.......the bullshit someone told you, or you heard on TV, or your mommy and daddy told you, but the actual FACT.

It's not "arguable" dipshit. The Roman/Byzantine empire was the strongest power on earth for roughly 2,000 years. There is no comparison to be made. At all.
And, fcuk your little guarantees. Don't come around here with this "I would argue it, but I don't want to. You would lose" nonsense. Either argue it, or shut the fcuk up.

Players like Kareem, Doctor J, etc, etc were all much more well spoken than the kids these days and that was way back when. That's because they actually went to school and were educated. They pluck these kids from the projects and coddle them before they even get out of high school.

Your tapping into a variable with this quote moron and on top of that you are comparing an empire that is over to something currently in progress.
It is absolutely warranted to claim that an argument could be made for America to be the most powerful country in history. It would depend on how you handle variables.
I also think many more negatives, albeit small ones compared to other empires, are highlighted in today's day n age due to widespread media. Look at what people claim are America's faults and compare that to it's accomplishments and predecessors mistakes. There is a debate to be had, easily.

What does that mean? What is "powerful"?
The British empire was the largest ever. That is something you can factually define. It means something. "Powerful" is extremely vague and too open to interpretation. Anybody can make up their own definition as to what "powerful" means.
Could America possibly the most powerful nation in history? First you have to define what "powerful" is.
