The guy outside of a jumpshot has very high talent level, he can be a ELITE defender when he puts his mind to it, I mean he was the only one who one on one consistantly stopped Blake when he was on him and he can literally defend 1-3's easily and some 4's.

Seems like his IQ has got better since leaving the Kings which makes sense, the dude has the tools glad to see him putting it together some of his drives to the rim are unreal for a man at that size to be able to change direction like he does. Really enjoy watching that Grizzlies 2nd unit (sucks Pondexter is injured) with him, Calathas, Ed Davis and now Tony Allen just flying around the court.

He has always had high IQ his court vision is amazing for a guy his size and he has a sixth sense for when he should be where on defense or when he should go in for a putback.

His problem in the past with the Kings and everyone else is that he had a couple bad habits that crippled him.

One of them was anticipating things on defense instead of plain reacting, which got him fouls quickly. Look at how many jump shots he challengess now without ever fouling jump shooters, it's because he usually doesn't go now until he's sure the shots coming. With his length and reaction speed, there is no reason to act on guesses.

The other obvious thing is on offense he dribbles before moving his pivot foot now which was always his problem. You can't be effective driving if you are called for a travel every time. Used to be he'd travel a couple times then just shoot jumpshots. Now he just takes it to the rim or through the lane to dish it.

One of my former players used to hang out at James Johnson's house in Chicago. I remember thinking, "Man, the one super remote NBA connection I have and it's with a scrub who seems as if he's going to be out of the league at any moment." It's weird to see him come to prominence this year in Memphis though. It looks like he did alright in Toronto too but I just never heard about him. Fun to see though.

Did he ever have any weight issues? I feel like I mixed him up with someone else.

Also, sidenote, what I do remember about Johnson is his kickboxing background:
Before Johnson committed to basketball and football in high school, the Cheyenne East prep standout won seven world karate titles, nine national championships, and was 20-0 as a kickboxer. Once, while touring with an AAU team from Denver, he rushed home and volunteered for a mixed martial arts bout sponsored by his father, who owns J&P's Martial Arts; he won in less than two minutes.

"We all fight," said Johnson, who is pleasant and engaging. "Even my mom has a black belt. ... Most of my Samoan cousins and family members played football. I was a wide receiver in high school, and I actually got more (scholarship) offers in football than basketball. But I wanted to do something different."http://www.sactownroyalty.com/2012/10/19/3525444/kings-james-johnson-is-also-terrifying-off-the-court

Every single time this play happens it's pointed out that it's actually an illegal play as the intention is clear that it's a pass to yourself (which is illegal). However, I'm glad they haven't prevented players from doing it. It's amazing to watch.
