Hibbert = Parish - Both legit 7 footers who are good defensively, can score when asked too.
West = McHale - Both skilled power forwards
George = Bird - The Alpha Dogs, the go to go scorers.
Hill & Stephenson = Ainge & DJ - All these players are guards who could hand the rock, but they are not true point guards, both of these tandems share ball handling duties.
Bynum = Walton - Both skilled big men off the bench, former all-stars dealing with past injuries.

Didn't know Bynum played on the 86 team :oldlol: , but yeah nothing wrong trying to emulate that team :lol

He's just trying to build a balanced, tough, efficient team with a vicious defense. Or in other words, the ideal playoff team.
And he's done a good job so far.

1985 Larry Bird would slap the shit out of 2014 Larry Bird if he was really trying to make that comparison

There's no wrong in that, for the contrary but yet, while seeing some similarities, they're not even that close to being that alike, at all.

I don't think it's a horrible comparison, though that Celtics team would clobber our pacers of today, and Indiana's one of the best teams in the league. Man, is our modern era really a weak era?

Laugh at the Legend at your own peril. Larry is likely the GOAT basketball mind. Dude is a genius when it comes to hoops. I await the post season with relish.....and ketchup.

So you're saying a player who is highly inefficient and only considered a star because he plays defense is equivalent to one of best offensive players in history who was not known for defense at all? Seems like a legit comparison.

indiana would lose in 5/6 against okc. how is the era weak when indiana is a team made just to win against heat? indiana would need okc to not make the finals to win it all.
Also, they are nothing like the celtics. Celtics would give 10-15 points more than pacers to the other teams in every game. they would still win because of their offense but don't act like pacers wouldn't be great defensively in any era and would win 50+ games in any era.
Pacers(hibbert mostly) would just not be able to score against any good big men.

The similarities are there. You can see Bird trying to model this team after the 80's Celtics.
Bird himself said in an interview that he traded for George Hill to be his point guard because Bird played with Dennis Johnson who was also the point guard but didn't have true PG skills. He noticed his Celtics teams won championships without a true point guard. This current Indiana team also doesn't have a true point guard, it is not a coincidence. When Bird signed Bynum you don't think Bill Walton crossed his mind?
Nobody is calling Paul George a Larry Bird, Bird is simply trying to model Indiana after Boston, so stfu with your ignorant statements child.

The '86 Celtics were a running team.
DJ didn't have point guard skills?
David West is a jump shooter and McHale was a post guy.
Where's Walton? Where's the bench that comes in and keeps things humming. The Celtics would get better defensively when Walton came in the game.

McHale is the same. only that he is an idiot.
he from day one tried to end lins career and never let him handle the ball, at least with harden in there.
hes fcking LOVES PArsons. he thinks PArsons is Bird even tho PArsons can barely dribble and is a weak playmaker.
he always lets HArden and PArsons to the playmaking or let Howard pound inside.
all he wants from his PG is hustle and defense.
since beverley cant even defend but hustles all game he gets way more playing time than a true PG in Lin:facepalm :facepalm
Well Bird is doing it right and shows he was always ten times the player and basketball mind MCFail is:coleman:

George and West can't hold the jocks of Bird and McHale.
Terrible comparison.
Add Scola and West together, add a couple of inches and you have McHale.

The '86 Celtics were a running team.
They ran selectively, The Celtics were the superior offensive team, they had the weapons and the ball movement Indiana doesn't have. That is what separates these two teams. Indiana is better defensively though.
DJ didn't have point guard skills?
He was a very good passer, but he didn't have the ball handling skills that Magic & Isiah had.
David West is a jump shooter and McHale was a post guy.
McHale is obviously a better player, but West without a doubt has some moves down the post, he is crafty.
Where's Walton? Where's the bench that comes in and keeps things humming. The Celtics would get better defensively when Walton came in the game.
That is why Bird signed Bynum, he is hoping he can have a similar impact Walton had in '86.

Even though I disagree with the main evaluations (non-realistic similarities), what's wrong imitating the one of the greatest teams ever, if not the greatest?
How many people would discredit Shaq-Kobe duo because they were a 2-5 punch 'like' Russell-Jones or Hakeem-Drexler?..
Even so-called intellectual threads are way off these days.
