View Full Version : Most overrated rapper: currently and all time

I say Drake (if you can even consider him a rapper) and Jay-z. Jay isn't terrible like Drake but I often hear him get mentioned in GOAT talks and I haven't even heard one song from him that make me go, "wow, he just killed it". Pretty average rapper.

jay z and eminem are my picks
Nope. Are they solo artists? If they're in a group that might be why I've never heard of them. Em is my absolute favorite though. I actually think he's underrated because most people that like rap agree his first three albums are really good, but don't like a lot of his newer stuff. I think his newer stuff is still better than what most rappers put out though and with the exception of a few songs is still really good material. That's just me though.

Jay-z was really good on his first couple of albums....but the hype around got too big imo

Wayne is actually underrated if anything...anytime his name comes up it is something negative

he has more hits than anyone, has stayed relevant for over a decade now, and has the entire rap industry biting his style and dying to have him featured on their track so they can have radio success

has there been a rap artist out there who has given Wayne any beef?....probably not because they know it would be career suicide, he just has way too much pull

2pac and Jay-z.

2pac was a great actor and personality and you can even call him a social activist i guess. But he wasn't so great on the mic in terms of pure lyrical talent.

Jay-z had a great debut album, and some very consistent albums since then. And he is a good businessman and knows how to stay relevant. This has lead many to put him in GOAT talks even though he's probably about only top 5-10 lyrically.

That is true but imo you can have a good song with good lyrics and an average beat. Not so much the other way around. And most of the beats on mmlp2 are actually good except for Monster. His choruses are what drag his current songs down the most if you ask me.

Everything you said is what makes Wayne overrated. People aren't getting Wayne to feature on their tracks because he is that damn good. It is because having him spit anything on your song will make it a hit.

Wayne was third in line with Cash Money behind BG and Juvenile.

There are debates like this about players and teams in the NBA forum all the time. It might just be your own personal opinion but you certainly can decide who's over/underrated based on what other people think compared to what you think.

Music is subjective to a point. Kanye struggles to stay on beat, can't rhyme as well as other rappers, doesn't have as good a flow, and his songs are at times full of terrible puns and wordplay. That part isn't subjective.

I like listening to LIL B at times, but I'm not going to come on here and claim hes a better rapper than someone I don't like listening to if they are clearly better.

Kanye's lucky hes as good as a producer as he is, or at least considered so by most people, because his beats carry him. His delivery and rapping is terrible, by industry standards, and he should be thankful people today like his over sampled beats, because they're about the only thing that make him relevant in music.

Pacs status is far beyond his average songs greatness but a lot of that is poor beat selection early and having to go thug life late. He never hit what should have been his prime. Me against the world Pac was great....he puts that style with better beats it would have been amazing.

Jay...I don't see overrated. Maybe his radio singles at times. But Dynasty intro? Can I live? U don't know? Momma love me? Most of American Gangster? Jay rips his "real" songs.

Off the top of my head : Biggie, Jay-z. Tupac and Ice Cube should all be considered better. Just the ones that got a comparable legacy, there are dozens who are more enjoyable to me.

I know it is an unpopular opinion, but too me Nas is Kind of one- dimensional : his lyrics are great, but his flow is always the same and he is nether charismatic or conveys emotions in his Music.

Its fine if you don't like him. Up to you. It just seems hard to justify calling Nas all right....

There must be 2000 rappers who will never match the worst verse on illmatic.

Far as the flow...he speeds it up at times he just rarely picks tracks that justify it. Not that he needs to.

I don't care if you don't like him. Just seems like calling him ok is like calling Kobe or Jerry West ok. Best ever? Maybe not. But ok/all right is more like....Corliss Williamson. Hell he might be better than that himself.

I don't think he's the best right now but I do think he's top 5 right now. Monster is a disgrace of a song and Stronger Than I Was is to slow for my liking. The rest of his new album is pretty solid though. Just gotta get over sub-par choruses.

I honestly don't understand what people look for in lyrics to consider it good. Listening to Los, one of his average verses is better than Kendricks very best. It's so utterly obvious but I guess people just buy into the hype.

It comes down to personal preference. LL has some nice tracks, but there is a lot of other rappers I'd also rather listen to before him, but not 200+ like him. His '80s stuff should be pretty damn nostalgic to me, but I just don't feel it that much. He only has a handful of songs I would even bother with:

Rock the Bells
The Boomin' System
Mama Said Knock You Out
Doin' It
and that 4, 3, 2, 1 collab (Hit 'Em High was alright)
Around the Way Girl is nostalgic, but I don't feel it that much

Also, that Canibus line usually pops into my mind when LL comes up - "While 99% of your fans wear high heels"

I honestly don't understand what people look for in lyrics to consider it good. Listening to Los, one of his average verses is better than Kendricks very best. It's so utterly obvious but I guess people just buy into the hype.

Not really. Never been wowed by any of his stuff. Technically he's not all that great. IMO above average schemes, above average flow, mediocre word play, weak punch lines, overly reliant on near rhymes, and an awful rap voice.

He's just not the type who's ever gonna murder a track or come with crazy bars

Technically, hes brilliant, his punch lines and word play are top notch and way over peoples heads. Might be the best ever in regards to word play.

"Every time I write these words, they become a taboo/Making sure my punctuation curve, every letter is true/Living my life in the margin and that metaphor was proof"

That right there from Poetic Justice has to be some of the sickest writing in rap ever.

I disagree. Like I said, I'm never really wowed by anything he spits. Maybe because I feel like Los is on another level compared to him in every category. Los will have bars like that on the regular.

Your only response on most topics is hyperbole and exaggeration. Can't take anything you say seriously especially when you consider average ABC type rappers better than some legends.

I mean, you actually think Chubb Rock is better than Biggie. :oldlol:
In fact, I'm not sure you do. You probably say a lot of this shit just to get a kick.

Fact is, that is some of the best wordplay in hip hop, and you'd be hard pressed to find better writing than that.

That's a cop out reply.

People like that can't justify their opinion, so they go for the easy answer. Its like saying Ali was overrated, and MJ, and Woods, etc just because they're called the best.

That line right there is fire, and is in no way overrated. If you're a fan of rap, you can't not appreciate that line. In fact, if you're a fan of poetry or great writing for that matter, you can't not appreciate that. That line is flat out clever to the highest degree.

2 things...

Kendrick is one of the best rappers ever. Just depends how far you stretch "One of the best". Put him on a song with anyone he can hold his own. He would outrap most. This is another example of someone being offended by new people being ranked highly.

He isnt the best ever or anything...but he can hang with some who are in the conversation just verse for verse. Also...

Lupe is so average.

Cmon now....

No average rapper ever made a song this good:

If I had to play one song for someone who doesnt respect rappers as artists id have to consider that one. I might not pick it....but its under consideration.

"Momma loved me...pops left me...grandma dressed me...plus she fed me. Banana pudding...was in the hood then...puffin on Ls drinking pink champale..."

I always like that Jay more than the "You cant even understand how rich I am...." Jay.

Once again, you take things out of context, and use exaggerate.

Notice how its a separate paragraph? Its separate to the issue, that's why.
Chubb Rock being better than Biggie is just an example of your BS, not the case of calling an average ABC rapper better than most legends, although I have seen you make certain assertions of that kind on here.

EDIT: And you still haven't found a piece of writing in rap that can match or exceed that wordplay. It is one of the illest lines in hip hop.

I was (and still am to some degree) a Nas STAN.

I used to rank him at the number 1 spot all the time, just like many 'hip hop heads'.

But most of my and most people's appreciation of Nas lays on his first two albums.

Before we go on further let me break shit down a bit....

Im not saying that Nas hasn't made great albums after Illmatic and IWW, nor am I saying that he hasn't had classic hits either. What I want to address is how his skills have deteriorated after his first two albums. He's been wildly inconsistent when it comes to the 'skill' aspect.

The man was the epitome of hip hop in his prime. Flow, delivery, rhyming, storytelling, you name it he was a damn near perfect 10. But it appeared he started to get lazy bit by bit. His delivery tends to be boring on many tracks, his flow is at times non existent as he just sputters lines with no connection or rhythm, his rhyming appears to last a line and then disappears for most of his songs.

Even then, his lyrics which are his trump card, haven't been as amazing. But even his good lyrics still fall short when you look at the whole picture and see how he lacks in delivery, flow, rhyming cadence, etc.etc.

Nas used to be a rapper's rapper, a technical savant, legendary for being a near perfect in every category while in his prime. He's better than an average rapper that's for sure, and still better than damn near every rapper today. And he still has enough to be as good as the best rappers. But as the GOAT rapper (or top 5) where many list him as is no mo.

Black Thought has had a long career himself, and has been more consistent. Not saying that he's better than Nas, I simply want to highlight how staying consistent is possible.

Common on the other hand.....

Honestly, Im a huge Preem stan. I visit his unofficial blog all the time to keep up with his latest. But on the real..... most of the people he's work with are overrated.

Jeru is overrated (no flow, rhyming)
Guru is just average... dope voice, but nothing else is special

Preemo simply makes beats that make artists stand out.
