I understand that old veterans without a contract often get signed after the trade deadline passes, but the conspiracy theorist in me suspects the NBA pressured the Nets to do this after news of the Michael Sam situation, so that the NBA could grab the crown as the first major sports league with an openly gay player.

Honestly wouldn't surprise me.

Anyway I'm happy for happy, smiling Jason Collins just like I'd be happy for Kurt Thomas or any other vet who was still tryin to hang on and got offered a role. The coverage of his homosexuality is getting old tho.

Luckily the jokes aren't. :lol

Why are people buying his jersey because of him being gay? Homosexual is a sin. What this man is doing with his life is absolutely wrong. We should be praying for him. Not celebrating him by buying his jersey.

It's not like the Nets are the only team he played for. I understand his best years(and I used that term very loosely) were as a Net and he was a starter on a Finals team, but 1)Like I said, the Nets were not the only team he ever played for and 2)He wasn't even that good to begin with. I've been a Net fan since 1986. When I think of the best players we've had, Jason isn't exactly the 1st...or the 2nd...or the 20th.

The federal government is going to continue to usurp power and expand its scope regardless. They'll come up with reasons to make it happen and each side will blame the other. Politicians who claim to be Republican are not going to turn down the opportunity to be more powerful. They'll just make up a reason why it's the Democrats who are responsible for all the unfavorable policies, and Democrats will do the same. Meanwhile, special interests are the ones responsible.

Partisan politics are destroying the country.

The coverage on ESPN for his first game was actually ridicolous:

They didn't show not one highlights of other players
He didn't score and had one rebound a steal and a foul (they showed the 3 of them and praised him for it)
At one point they showed a couple of screens since they needed to fill the highlight reel

It's a worthless piece of news yet we are talking about because the media wants us too. Why? Idk...

How is this even a big deal?
They are showing highlights of this guy like they are making a social stance against homophobia when in reality there is probably no backlash.
And these 'journalist' have a nerve to call him a trail blazer, that's cute.
There can't be people who are bothered by a gay guy playing basketball, right?

You seem to think that it is not a big deal, but if it weren't a big deal, he wouldn't be the first. When the 30th player comes out or something, that is when it will be no big deal and it will be time to really question "who cares?".

The more I think about this the sillier it gets. What's the #1 insult on this board? If you think being openly gay in the sports world, is easy, you're kidding yourself. Yes, change is happening and happening pretty quick, but to act like 90% of country doesn't care is way off.

There's only really two types of people that care about that.. excluding the news writers or TV guys, because it's their job to report things.

The homophobes and the homos.

The homophobes love to criticise it and the homos love to support it. And most homophobes have a deep insecure worry that they may be gay themselves.. a repressed desire. So really.. the only people that care about this are gay people.

So in other words.. you are all gay.

No one else cares.

You mean why don't they buy Steve Francis jerseys?

Steve Francis was actually a great player not a BLATANT MEDIA PROPAGANDA TOOL.

I thought being gay meant you're attracted to the same sex not being literally retarded bc Jason Collins is a fn horrible basketball player, worst in the league right now.

If you wanted to support a gay player, then fine but the people buying Collins jersey aren't all gay judging by the publicity, media and Collins being an absolute atrocity of a player

I mean buy a Steve Francis,a Parsons-Lin,a Magic Johnson jersey but Collins
come on.

And we know damn well Collins is using being gay for publicity, media relations and actually have a job otherwise no team would even want to sign him bc on the court he's a negative and offers nothing,

using the number 69 too, come the f on

Collins couldn't be more blatant in the gay media hype going on using it to his advantage

LOL @ media hyping up left-wing agenda. I guess that's why reporting in the media about Obama is about 90-95% negative. Media in the U.S. is controlled by the right-wing, son.

Don't know what cave you're living in, but the rest of us are bombarded with left-wing agenda from the media, movie and music stars, companies, etc.

In Colorado (where there is a state constitutional ban on same sex marriage), a state judge ruled against a baker who had refused to sell a wedding cake to a gay couple. Now, if I were gay and wanted to "get married," why would I go to the trouble of suing someone who doesn't want to bake my wedding cake. Even if I forced him to, wouldn't I worry about him spitting in my cake or putting salt instead of sugar in the cake and refusing payment? There are lots of other bakers out there who would gladly take my business. What's with ramming my lifestyle down the baker's throat? And doesn't the baker have his right to freedom of religion?

Then look at what's going on in Arizona - pressure from the NFL, Apple, American Airlines, etc. and these judges over-turning voter-approved bans of same sex marriage in Utah, Texas, etc.

And let's not talk about Obama - a very sore point - as my family's health insurance premium has gone up almost $6000 this year - there goes my IRA - I guess I don't get to save for retirement. Instead I get to subsidize some one else's health insurance.
