View Full Version : Are overly competitive people really that bad?

Many people who are very competitive are labeled as douche bags or immature.
But I don't know, i think some people just enjoy the competition as if it were a sport.
I myself used to be very competitive in middle school and high school in terms of the social side of school. I was one of the dorks in 7th grade and I wanted to be better than that..basically in the same way the Milwaukee Bucks right now want to move up in the standings over the next few years.
I can vividly remember a one month span in 10th grade in which i made friends with some of the popular kids and finally got noticed and it is a great memory. I can also vividly remember walking into lunch in 9th grade and realizing that out of 70 classmates, I had 1 total friend to sit next to :oldlol: . So I had something to "play" for, and it created ups and downs and it was highly entertaining in a way.
Living life now without that competition is somewhat boring. Many ex-NBA players lose that competition and go mad once they retire.
I'm glad i have other hobbies and things i want to do now though.
But what I'm trying to show is that the competition is kind of fun and maybe some people just like it like its a hobby. It gives them something to aim for and "play" for. Some people like playing guitar. Some people like reading novels. Some people like competing with others...it doesn't mean they are douchebags.
TLDR; Just read the first two sentences basically.

It does if they make more than 250,000 dollars per year.
Or is it 400,000 now?
Can one of our resident libs verify where the cut off is, please.

I'm competitive as ****, especially during basketball games. Sometimes after the game I realize that I was being a dick but whatever. Tough love. I hate losing more than I like winning.

Anything that's "overly" anything is inherently bad.

I compete at anything.
-At sports
-At the gym (I know that one is stupid)
-Even when it comes to reading a book, I want to finish before everyone else.
Competitive nice is great. If you don;t have it in you, you suck

I am very competitive when it comes to things that I think I am good at. If I were to lose in a chess match to a random person I would lose my shit.
Good point. If I lost to someone in tennis I wouldn't give a shit but if I lost in basketball, I would also lose my shit

Every single one of you are descended from a man who has successfully gone through the meatgrinder that is life to collect resources, better his station in life and reproduce with a worthwhile woman.
Better start behaving like one.
The only acceptable time when being "overly competitive" is bad when it involves moral transgressions.
Or in social situations when the main emotional mood is fun.
You're sperm was the fastest.
You're in 2014.
You're not fukktarded.

This.
Generally when I see "overly competitive" I think that they care so much about winning that they kill the fun for others even in games that don't matter. Essentially, they are being selfish because they aren't considering others and only care about themselves; thus, they are typically being douches.
It is possible to be really competitive, but then tone that down when others are just casually playing a game. I can get really competitive because I care about winning, but I try not to be competitive to the point of ruining the fun of others in games that don't matter.

I'm competitive as hell but say in a pickup game I'm not gonna be a dick or anything. Was at the gym earlier today and got put on clearly the best player there for defense. He was like 6'3, shot behind his head and could splash, liked to bang in the post and shit, and I locked his ass down.
Would use my hands to cutoff his vision, would front him in the post, would constantly keep up with him on the dribble, many times forcing him to move back and pass it up.
Dude was getting pissy about me going so hard on D, but after the games we shook hands and it was all cool.

yes they are, unless they happen to be in a professional sport/competition or doing it for their school or country.

Only the bold is relevant to the thread. The rest is desperate e-bragging.

I've competed in 2 sports at a national level. I'm a competitive person. Being overly competitive is only a negative thing if you're a bad sport about it.
I dislike the "It's taking part that counts" crowd more than anything.
