Dozens charged in multimillion-dollar N.Y.-N.J.-area car theft ring [video]

The promise of quick bundles of cash in return for stolen luxury cars and sport utility vehicles motivated a violent car ring in New York and New Jersey, which was smashed by law enforcement agencies Thursday morning. The police have charged 32 people, 26 of whom have been arrested — including three this morning — in connection with a car jacking and trafficking ring that sold stolen luxury automobiles to individuals in West Africa. Six people remain at large. Acting Attorney General John Hoffman announced the arrests at a news conference at the State Police barracks in Totowa. “This ring targeted high-end vehicles, high-value vehicles, particularly luxury SUVs were in the most demand,” Hoffman said. The intense demand for these stolen cars and the high payouts for street-level thieves has led to such violent acts as a woman being pistol whipped as she handed over her car in Newark, and the murder of Dustin Friedland in the Short Hills Mall parking lot in December. This ring has not been connected to Friedland’s murder and the theft of his Range Rover. “The murder of Mr. Friedland shows how far these carjackers will go,” Hoffman said. In all, 163 cars have been recovered, and 140 of the cars were found in containers on docks in Newark, Elizabeth and Staten Island, Hoffman said. At least five were located in garages and other locations where the thieves placed them to "cool off" so members of the ring could determine whether they contained tracking devices. The value of the stolen vehicles was in excess of $8 million. Also recovered during the arrests was a loaded .22-caliber gun and $22,000 in cash. Most of the men arrested and charged were from Essex County, in particular Newark. Others lived in Ocean and Union counties. The ring stole cars throughout New Jersey, including in Bergen County, Hoffman said. Overseas, the luxury cars fetched prices well above the market price if they were new in the United States. Some cars sold for more than $100,000. Individual thieves were promised $4,000 to $8,000 to steal the luxury cars. The seven leaders face carjacking and money laundering charges. Each crime carries a minimum 10-year sentence. The sentences for money laundering charges must run consecutively to any other sentences. Hoffman swore that prosecutors will seek stern penalties for all the responsible parties. “They will get what they deserve,” he said. - See more at: http://www.northjersey.com/news/crime_courts/29_charged_in_NJ_car_theft_ring.html?page=all#stha sh.pzXVivN1.dpuf

Proof of why it's fine to stereotype and pull over for 'driving while black'.

Is joke.
Here in NYC the police had an effective program called stop and frisk. This was recently ended by the new mayor :facepalm because most of the people getting arrested were black

A. They did not end the program. They plan on stopping its "overuse."
B. When only 11% of the people stopped were white, is it surprising whites were not most of the people being arrested.
C. Close to 90% of those stopped were not arrested at all.

Since we all know why this thread was made... who do you think is more destructive/costly to society... The gentlemen above who stole some cars or this wholesome fraternal organization?

Funny thing is, there was a sweep in NYC just a week or two ago of Gambino and Lucchese crime family members in connection with an international drug importation ring (they hid cocaine in frozen fish, canned goods, and other methods) that was controlled by the infamous N'Drangheta from Calabria, Italy.

Why no mention of this by the OP? :confusedshrug:

You are absolutely correct. The mafia, whether it be Russian, Italian, or Chinese is much more devastating to America in terms of size, strength, and resources law enforcement has to use in order to get them.

Since we all know why this thread was made
Tell me then,,,, why was this thread created?
