windows' free built-in (windows defender for win 8 & microsoft security essentials for earlier versions) is more than enough for me. i stopped getting 3rd party antivirus since mse first appeared

Seriously this. Windows built-in antivirus has improved leaps and bounds since Windows 7/Vista. If you're gullible enough to click on the "You've won a free iPad!" popup, it's your own fault.
I always used NOD32 or AVG.

That's what i've been using since about 2011 as well. Seems to get the job done as advertised.
