They hire him now so he can pull off the most important move. He convinces Carmelo to not opt-out.
When Carmelo expires after next season the Knicks are able to sign 2 max free agents and then bring Carmelo back.
Phil starts out with 3 perfect triangle pieces in JR, Bargnani, and most importantly the offense is made for the skillset of Carmelo. Putting those guys in spots other than from the perimeter creating off the dribble will do wonders.
The best thing to ever happen to shumpert will be Phil coming along. Turning him in to a gaurd will make shumpert so much money. The difference is he won't be asked to create offense off the dribble he will be learning to make entry passes and then get opportunities for wide open jump shots or driving lanes.

Lol @ Dragic leaving a good situation in PHX. Love's a possibility tho.
Lol @ Bargnani playing over Chandler.
Lol @ OP.
What would Melo's cap hold be in 2 years?

Bingo.
How you liking bargnani? This must be a dream come true for someone like you who has been making "bargnani to the knicks" threads for years now. Is he everything that you hoped and dreamed about? Are you guys closer to winning the championship?

Did you seriously just use the words "perfect pieces" to describe JR and Bargs?

:oldlol:
What's he going to do? Show him his rings? Tell him about all the stacked squads he's coached? Promise him the world but in reality have no means to deliver on said promise?
Yes, I really see how PJax is going to persuade Melo to stay. Riigghttt...

Phil would be there as an executive, not a coach. If the Knicka hire a new coach with ANY clout, like a JVG as Knicks fans have been fluttering about, do you REALLY think that coach will let Phil tell him what offensive philosophies to implement? Like some overpaid puppet?

This is just a replica post of what Lakers fans said last season.
Knicks are doomed for years to come.

Phil on the bench and Carmelo averages 15 free throws a game and goes 30/10

If Phil becomes front office guru solid bet your next head coach will be his buddy Kurt Rambis

I don't think so, it already sounds like some of the current regime will stay on, and if that's the case I think there will be a bigger name brought in as head coach. There are discussions about Phil possibly coaching as a bridge. That doesn't sound like Rambis coming in.

Not even addressing the feasibility of your plan, you can't win a championship fielding the worst defensive starting 5 of all time.

Phil should probably let Melo walk and go for a complete rebuild. Wait until you draft a few nice young players, then sign a max free agent superstar or two when you have that in place.

I would LOVE to watch that team win 41 games and give up 115ppg
Knicks need to clean house after this season. Don't resign melo. Trade tyson and Amare's expiring contracts next season and just tank it.

Letting Carmelo walk for free would be the dumbest move possible
