View Full Version : Overrated Plays

-Chris Webber's dunk on Charles Barkley. Nice play, but you're supposed to dunk on someone 10 years older and 5 inches shorter than you. NBA Action on Courtside Countdown had it as the play of the year. That is overrated.

-John Havlicek stealing the ball. Because of Johnny Most's call. Greer and especially Walker couldn't have made it any easier for Havlicek. Standing there, not even moving, waiting for the ball to come to him.

-A.I. crossing up MJ. Iverson has many many plays more spectacular than that. It just gets overrated because it was MJ he scored on. MJ wasn't the same defender at 34 as he had been earlier anyway. This should not rank that high on the list of great AI plays, when you look at some of the jaw dropping plays he did.

A.I crossing up Jordan was iconic, because it showed how the new generation was about to take over. Truthfully, it wasn't some epic play since MJ almost recovered to block the shot.

Kobe's alley pop to Shaq was pretty overrated IMO.

Great thread idea, and I'm surprised this has never been brought up until now, at least for the time I've been here on ISH.

I was about to bring up Iverson's crossover, but I think the reason it's been so highly symbolic was that it was during Iverson's rookie year, and sort of symbolized the passing of the torch at the time.

I should also mention LeBron's Game-Winner Over the Magic in Game 2 of the 2009 Eastern Conference Finals. I remember a lot of news outlets were analogizing it to Michael Jordan's "The Shot". Like this one from ESPN.

It was a good shot though, it's definitely arguable. MJ did win the series for the Bulls but you can argue LeBron had less time, and it was in the ECF instead of the first round, etc.

Lebron's dunk on KG the "no regard for human life" one.

He has had so many more remarkable dunks that idk why that one got so hyped up.

I guess it was because it was on KG.... another thing was probably the comments made by the commentators on the plays.

Aw shit, you're right. This should be the number one most overrated play of all time.

I don't know about plays, but Lebron's "Headband game" is way overrated, he was cold for most of the game & then had one good sequence followed by 2 consecutive turnovers & 2 missed 3pt shots in the last minute.

Maybe Kobe's game-winner against Miami, it was an impossible shot but back in the day it was hyped up like MJ's shot against the Jazz in 98. It was a very difficult shot but it was a lucky ass shot off the glass.

No one will ever remember LeBron doing anything in that game.

That game and series will inevitably belong to Ray Allen.

Literally the only thing I hear in real life about that series is Ray Allen. No one even remembers what LeBron did or didn't do.

Well, I take that back. They do remember LeBron bricking the three and Bosh getting the rebound, but it always reverts back to Ray Allen winning the title for the Heat.

2013 finals = Ray Allen.

Done.

Harden's Spurs series with OKC 2 years ago is also incredibly overrated. I've heard jackasses say he was the best player for OKC in that series.

Pretty much all of LeBron's career is 'overrated'

ESPN saw a young 17 year old kid with insane physical genetics and decided he was the next MJ when he was a Junior in High School.

Guys like Kobe actually earned their hype with hard work and performance.

LeBron was literally hyped like Michael Jordan before he stepped foot onto an NBA court. Why? Because he was bigger, stronger, faster, and could jump higher than his peers. MUST BE MJ!

But no. Not even remotely close. 20 points on 30% shooting is not MJ. 17 ppg is not MJ. 8 points in a finals game IS NOT MJ!

He has done nothing remotely memorable or iconic. He has no signature moments other than him choking, colluding with superstars, leaving his home state, and talking up to the media. That's it. Oh, and flopping.

LeBron is one big hype machine that ESPN cannot afford to lose out on. They have brainwashed too many young kids into thinking he's an all-time great so there is no turning back.

Kevin Durant getting fouled at the end of game 2 and not getting the call is the most despicable moment in sports history. **** the shoeless joe scandal. That's number 1.

Shit was just sad because the official Dan Crawford was like, right ****ing there, inches away. I think Heat's record with Crawford officiating the playoffs, is like insanely good. He was the primary official in 2006. I think they actualy have a losing record in the playoffs w/o Dan Crawford.

OKC should have started that series up 2-0. And in game 3 an official blew a call late in the game as well when it was tied I believe. Harden flopped on LeBron near halfcourt with LeBron having the ball and they called it a foul on Harden for whatever reason. All Harden did was literally just fall to the ground, never even touched LeBron. LeBron got FT's for free and MIA went on to win. Flopping is a bitch move, but you don't call a foul for that. Otherwise Heat would have gotten a shit ton of more foul calls, guys were falling on the ground every possession for Miami that series.

Yeah and it also wasn't an epic play by Tayshaun Prince because Reggie Miller almost made the layup

True. This shot is still impressive since he still made it, but insanely overrated. Lots of players can make an open shot if you let them shove defenders out of the way.

If so then LeBron fouls on offense every single time he drives to the hoop.

Yet somehow goes a whole month without getting a foul called on him. :facepalm smh

The most enjoyable one is Durant crying on his mom s shoulder after Lebron owned him.

No, that missed battier charge call should have been his 4th foul at the most. The fouls earlier in the game he was given should not have been given.

Durant was committing stupid fouls, and he should have fouled out on that charge. Don't ask for fair officiating and then say it's ok for Durant.

He got a foul called on him for jab stepping on offense... :lol :lol :lol He jumped on D Wade's pumpfake, but recovered and blocked D Wade's shot and they still called it a foul on him.

D Wade went to the FT line when no one even touched him just because he screamed "HEY!!!" in the air. Shit was hilarious. Harden falls down and he's near LeBron so they just give LeBron the FT's.

Yet when Durant is inches away from an official and fouled 3 times by LeBron, the ref doesn't call shit :lol When Westbrook scores 43 points with most coming in the paint, he gets THREE fta. :lol

That series, like every Miami series that year, was total bullshit.

I watched the whole series, Durant was committing ticky tack fouls. Even the magic and the commentators were saying he was doing stupid fouls. Thunder didn't have a chance anyway, they aren't coming back from 3-1

Debatable.

I enjoyed watching the miracle on ice in 1980. That was the best moment in American sports history.

You're just confirming my brainwashing theory. You've never even played a sport in your life, so you have no idea about the brotherhood or comradery.

You're a nerd. Not even from this country and all you know is LeBron, LeBron, LeBron. Typical fat geek who has no real perception on the history of sports.

Go ahead and pull your passive aggressive butthurt because I speak the truth about your hero, LeBron James. Biggest choker of all time.

Oh my god! You are such a badass. You just call me a nerd on a msg board!! wohoohohoho. :oldlol: :oldlol:

**** off loser and go jack off to Westbrook s ugly face. :oldlol:
Trying to be a character on a msg board. :facepalm

This. The Thunder were heavy favorites too! :oldlol: They had a chance to win every game except game 5, but in crunch time KD the mental midget was no where to be found. It was like Where's Waldo down the stretch of those games, with KD hiding in the corner and deferring to Westbrook! :lol

Bron's dunk on Duncan and KG. Duncan one in particular was meh to me. KG one was decent but people act like it was a lot better than it was. Saying that though, it should have been an and 1.

Jordan switch hand layup, and the dunk on the Hawks after the one hand fake. The layup was completely unnecessary, and the dunk wasn't nearly nasty enough, kinda like the Duncan one above.

Allen Iverson stepping over Lue... Big deal.

Jordan s shot against Utah, 98. It was a clear offensive foul.

Jordan got all the calls and got away with all sorts of stuff, but I don't think that would have been called an offensive foul even if it were some average player. It was a minor push that happens all the time, it just got noticed because Russell fell.

The year before when he hit the game winner in Chicago, MJ gave Russell his forearm and a "get the f--- out of my way" motion
