View Full Version : Kobe out for the season.

[QUOTE]Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant is not expected to return from his fractured left knee this season, a person with knowledge of his situation told USA TODAY Sports.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because no formal announcement has been made about Bryant's status.
Bryant returned from the Achilles tendon tear he suffered in April on Dec. 8, then fractured his knee six games later and has struggled in his rehabilitation ever since.
Bleacher Report first reported that the Lakers would announce this week that Bryant is out for the season.
The 35-year-old who has won five titles and appeared in 16 All-Star games signed a two-year, $48.5 million extension in late November, so this is hardly the end of his storied career.
But with the Lakers plummeting ever so much closer to a top draft pick (they're tied with the Sacramento Kings for the worst record in the Western Conference at 22-42), it appears Bryant will focus on regaining full strength and returning next season when the Lakers roster, that is in a rebuilding period, likely looks very different.
Only Bryant, point guard Steve Nash, and center Robert Sacre are on contract for next season, though guard Nick Young has a player option worth $1.2 million.
Forward Pau Gasol will be a free agent this summer, and Nash's future is certainly in question as he has played 10 games this season largely because of recurring back soreness. The 40-year-old point guard has one year remaining on his deal worth $9.7 million, but said recently that he would still like to play his contract out rather than retire if his body will eventually cooperate.
Bryant has shocked the masses before with his ability to achieve the most unlikely of feats, but the person close to him said the current outlook is that Bryant won't be back until the 2014-15 season. Yet the mental toll of his recovery, it's safe to say, has been as taxing as the physical price he has paid.
When asked about the prospect of returning at All-Star weekend in New Orleans last month, Bryant was vague about his timetable and transparent about the frustration involved in this process.
"Just try to get better and then go from there," he told reporters. "I just try to focus, keep my blinders on and just do what I have to do and not worry too much about what's going on around you, but just stay focused on what my responsibilities are."
Asked if he could envision a return to All-Star level play, Bryant said, "I hope so

honestly that injury prolly wasn't even that bad. the collective leadership prolly told him to sit out for the rest of the season and he agreed, so they can get a good draft pick.

Yup, it was a simple knee fracture, no surgery. They're being cautious & smart about it.

He is a team cancer at this point of his career, who plays zero defence and wrecks team chemistry... lakers would finish with a worse record if he booted up.

:facepalm
Yet he led a struggling Lakers squad with Pau & Nash both out for 30+ games + no bench to 45 wins & they got swept in a historic fashion without him.
D'Antoni's system doesn't focus on defense, Kobe spent all his energy on scoring 25-30 a night & dishing out 5-10 assists.
How have the Lakers been without Kobe this season, despite Pau being there most of the time & putting up 20 points 10 rebounds in almost every game?
They were 9th in ORTG with Kobe last season and 6th in PPG, this season they're 12th in ppg in 22nd in ORTG despite having added more scorers & Pau being there to pick up the slack.
Next season will be fun with y'all haters having to eat crow & make up new crap to discredit Kobe when we're a Playoff team again.

he isn't on his new contract so you can't evaluate the new one yet, on his current contract he still won b2b titles & got the Lakers a multi-billion dollar TV deal, he is worth every penny.

Record with Kobe - 2 wins, 4 losses, .333 win percentage
Record without Kobe - 20 wins, 38 losses, .345 win percentage
If the aim is to lose games, Kobe should be playing.
Seriously though, smart decision on all fronts.
Kobe probably would not have fixed his poor form and he would have risked getting injured yet again.

I think he would have gotten back in shape, but it would have ruined our tank job, the 2-4 record is such a small sample size & both wins came on the road against top defensive teams.
Kobe in his last game looked like his old self going up against Tony Allen, solid outing there.

If it was the same situation like Derrick Rose last year, he would have been playing already but there is just no point for him to come back this season. Lakers season is over and any win is a lose lose situation with the tanking and getting higher draft pick.

Yes his action speaks louder than his words. I just think that he's comfortable for what he achieved already. Otherwise he would taken less money to chase more rings.

He wasn't swept, Lakers lost in 5 in the 2nd round to OKC, though the series could have gone 6/7 if Steve Blake doesn't miss the damn wide open corner 3 & Pau doesn't **** up Game 4 with his turnover, which led to Kevin Durant's game-winning 3.
Last Playoff game Kobe played he scored 42 points. He had 3 straight 36+ point games in that series, in those 3, he averaged 39 ppg 7 rpg 4 apg on 45% shooting.
He was actually decent in his last Playoff run, but the team around him didn't show up on a consistent basis. Kobe showed he still had it in him with his averages of 30 5 4 for the Playoffs, but Phil ain't there no more, Pau will never be Pau again.

This is my feeling as well. It ain't happening in two seasons while he's under that contract. I don't care what anyone says.
This is a farewell tour. They'll put out an entertaining team and have him showcase his talents and that's it.

This year pretty much proves that Gasol was the real FMVP and carried Kobe to 2 titles. Look at what Pau is doing this season, absolutely beasting averaging 18 & 10 which are his 09-10 championship numbers, it's a shame Kobe the team killer is holding them back by being such a distraction.
If only we had Dwight this year to lead us to a first round sweep and the worse loss in Lakers playoff history, where is Dwight when you need him :(

yup, for years we've been saying how much better the Lakers would be w/o Kobe and that Pau could lead a team by himself if we replaced Kobe with an average SG like a Jodie Meeks, we saw the level of success the Lakers achieved last year once Kobe got injured

Light at the end of tunnel is arriving quicker for Kobe. I mean that achilles tear, then breaking his knee cap. All that mileage logged on his wheels. It's no bueno. He should sit out the rest of the season.
Oh wait, when Derrick Rose does it he's soft, and mentally fragile as opposed to smart, and cautious. Right ... ISH double standards.
Anyway, this is the twilight swan song for Bean, let's all enjoy it while it lasts. One of the best to ever do it, a truly transcendent player is close to the end. It's a shame we didn't get to see him play this season.

Why would a player who missed an entire season cut his teeth in the playoffs to shake off rust? He'd being doing possibly more detriment to this team, than good. He was being cautious with his body, there is nothing wrong with that ... just because a doctor clears you doesn't mean on a personal level that you're actually ready.

I'm surprised no one put the Tweets of what Kobe said to the media up since it's quite interesting. Basically said that Jim needs to straighten himself out and his relationship with Jeanie and do what's best for the team. To form an identity and a plan. He doesn't want to rebuild the next few years and doesn't have anymore patience, along with wanting to be in the loop about decisions made.
It's gonna be quite interesting over the summer to see what the Lakers do and how Kobe responds. Already got Magic Johnson saying that Phil should be the face of the Lakers franchise, even though he seems to be headed to NY.
Edit: Actually, there's a thread about it on the front page, why there's two I dunno but you can check it out there.

can't wait to see it downplayed on ISH and turned into a back handed compliment for being a "chucker, gunner, who lucked himself into 5 championships"
but yeah it'd be pretty special to see, especially if he does it before playing 20 full seasons in the NBA
considering this is a guy who came off the bench his first 2 years yeah it'd be pretty crazy to see him end up as the NBA's all time leading scorer
