Are they in limbo now?

They just need to get rid of Jennings and Smith. Build around Drummond and Monroe. Smith and Jennings are making ~20 mil this season, if I'm not mistaken. You can get a really good PG and SF for that kind of money.

And they were in the position to do that until they signed Jennings and Smith :lol :facepalm

Watching these guys play you could just tell they have a toxic environment in the locker room. This offseason was such a fail for them

They should get rid of Dumars first. He's shot.

Should have not signed Jennings or Smith. Tyreke Evans would have been a good pick up for Detroit.

Yeah. That was a TERRIBLE move by the FO. Maybe they should start by cleaning house in the FO first.

Rodney Stuckey is a free agent for them this offseason, I think he's a game changer for a contending team. Thoughts?

I think they could win with Josh Smith, he could be a good player if he stopped shooting 3's. Brandon Jennings sucks though, idiotic signing.. they already had a cheaper version in Brandon Knight.

The problem with Smith is his IQ. Dude makes the dumbest plays! Taking long 2 pointers, fadeaways, and 3's, when he should be playing near the rim.

It will be a double fail if they don't finish in the bottom 8 or worse

They have some really nice young pieces in Monroe and Drummond. That Josh Smith contract, though... that's a problem.

It will really limit any moves they can make going forward. Being bad, but young and talented isn't necessarily a bad thing. Being bad, young and have your salary used up with bad contracts?

That's not good.

Joe dumars is a dumbass. This teams was horrible even on paper :/

They did, Monroe probably looking to leave in FA this offseason. I guess they can move smith to PF which is his natural position and build around Drummond. Hope Jennings improve in the offseason and bring in a coach that can use them correctly.

Drummond needs to improve his FT shooting to be effective in late game situations. That was one reason why Frank didn't trust him on the floor in his rookie year.

Do they have a pick this year?

They also needa get rid of Dumars.

Detroit should fine Smith, every time he takes a three.

The thing people don't realize is that because of the players union there is a MINIMUM salary floor. You are basically require to have x amount of money in salary each year, even if it means giving out bad contracts to questionable players. That's what the union gets you.

Rebuilding teams like the Kings and Pistons actually are FORCED to sign whatever free agents out there to bad contracts because all their young players make small salaries.

That's why every fan who actually SIDES with the union during negotiations is a freakin retard. They're thinking with their vag instead of their head. Both the owners and players want more money, but only the owners actually care about the product because that's how they make their money. Players just want big fat guaranteed deals and don't give a shit about fan experience. But no, you get these poser dweebs who want to advertise HEY, I SUPPORT THE BLACK GUYS EVERYBODY!!!!! and claim that the players deserve more this and more that in concessions. It's nothing but a corny as advertisement to the world of their pseudo compassion and progressiveness.

I'm looking at you Sarcastic.

^ Granted, except you can just not pay the minimum, like Philly hasn't this year. You instead pay the difference to the league at the end of the season - whatever you're under by. My understanding is that there is no other penalty, except, of course, your team will probably suck.

Given the choice of your team being horrible for a year but $20-30 mil under the cap or being horrible whilst right at the cap and with 10 combined years of Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings on big salaries... I'd argue most fans would take the Philly scenario.

What Detroit did last off-season is simply bad management, not coercion by the Union. No one makes you spend money on players if you don't want to. And Joe Dumars has form here. Last time he had cap space he spent it on Ben Gordon and Charlie V, a shoot first midget with a questionable attitude and a "stretch 4" with no real position. Sure enough, he gets $25 mil to spend and it goes to Jennings and Smith a.k.a. Gordon and Charlie MKII

No fan in their right mind would think that playing Josh Smith at the 3 with two back-to-the-basket big guys is a good idea. Yes, I said "fan." Not basketball executive. It's a totally idiotic and indefensible move on behalf of someone who's supposed to have an intimate understanding of the game. And no "We had cap space and I had to use it" is not a defense.

cavs had a failed season too but at least they don't have sh*t contracts to deal with. They still kept their flexibility.

Even still i think Detroit is closer to contender status if they can somehow finagle getting rid of smith and/or jennings.

Jennings contract isn't terrible but Smith's is an albatross. 14 mill guaranteed through 2016/2017. He's also done a bad job of letting other GM's know how willing he is to change or modify his game.

I knew Jennings was gonna be garbage. Get a decent passing PG who could get the most out of Monroe & Drummond & you're looking at a much better team.

But aren't teams allowed to just go under the floor and pay out the difference to their current players? The Kings and Pistons are not FORCED to give out bad deals...they just do. I don't know the cap minimum rules at all really but, from my limited knowledge, I don't see how the CBA gets the blame for Dumars being bad at his job.
