They have talent, it's just that a lot of their players are dumbasses on the court.

And exactly how many times has Melo been "hot" around playoff time ? It doesn't matter, because a team will contain him and his teammates won't step up. Chandler will get outplayed, Smith will shoot awful %'s again, Felton will shoot awful and opposing PG's will score on him at will, Amare doesn't have much left in the tank, and the rest I'm not even going to bring up.
