Nothing is less sure than this job...

Marc Stein ‏@ESPNSteinLine 21m

Give Phil this much: After all those claims he was gift-wrapped MJ/Pip, then Shaq & Kobe, he's now taking hardest job he could probably take

He fleeced Dolan for money and is gonna retire after Carmelo dips and the rebuild fails. Nothing is more sure than straight cash.

He's way too old now, out of his element and taking a job where he cannot do anything but improve the situation. Such a warrior.

I guess he feels he's proved himself. He has nothing to lose, but plenty to gain out of turning around a New York Knicks team in complete disarray.

He joined the Lakers when they only had Kobe. Far from sure thing

Not as a coach, tho. How often do sure President of Basketball Operation jobs open up?

Serious question. I don't know.

It's different though, no? He's not coaching the team. He's just directing personnel moves, creating a particular culture that isn't saturated with utter incompetence, ect. He's not going to be there in the trenches with the players.

So, not sure if completely dispelled. At this point his legacy is cemented, so it's like, what's their to lose? He can only win. Rake in $15 million/yr. And if you can turn the franchise around, you expand your legend. If not, the media will just blame it on James Dolan anyway. Pretty sure Phil walks away unscathed regardless of the results.

If 15 million bucks is not a "sure thing" then I don't know what is is.

Phil joined Lakers in 05-06

Their starters:

Smush Parker
Kobe
Odom
Brian Cook
Kwame Brown

and the great Chris Mihm.

Myth already dispelled long time ago.

It's a sure thing that the Knicks will be garbage.

I wonder how could he negotiate with the new school GM's like Morey and Hinkie. Just imagine Phil Jax going toe to toe with stats with these guys.

 the 60mil is "sure things" the moment he signs the contract.

Are we gonna act like this is not mainly for the paycheck?

Phil Jackson recognizes idiots when he sees them. He sees everyone is butt raping the Knicks and he swooped in to get his piece of the action. He sensed a sure thing 60 mil.

People who think Phil is taking jobs to cash checks are hilariously wrong.

Why does it have to be between winning a chip and failing hard? Phil is there to reform the club's structure so they could be consistently good for a long time. A big market team like the Knicks would enjoy great success financially just being a good team during the course of a let's say a decade. As a poster above me said, they are trying to inject winning spirit and culture to the team first.

At this point Phil has developed into a sort of high quality brand. His name is strictly to attract big names and keep Melo.

He's still got a General Manager to do that.

This is Phil Jackson, dudes. He didn't just take this job without making his plans ahead of time. There's no way he doesn't already have the next six steps of this process mapped out with the players/coaches/personnel he wants.

This doesn't effect his w-l record. Sure it may effect his reputation, but he's getting paid. That's what he wants. Will he make the Knicks better, I think guys here could make the Knicks better. So he can't be any worse than what it's been.
