60s and 70s music>>>>
Im making a playlist for my father's bday and the music from that era is hands down the best.
Although not my favorite artist/s The Beatles' catalog is unfukable. Im going through tons of Stones, Kinks, etc.etc. and Beatles have the most memorable, the most versatile, experimental, and all around better catalog.
I'll go through Gimme Shelter a song that sends shivers down my spine, but then Let it Be comes on and I stop on my tracks to listen to the full song. I go through my list adding more songs and I basically skim through all of them (to expedite the playlist creation process) but whenever I come across a Beatles song I listen to the full song 8/10 times.
As per usual.... go ahead and claim that Im being nostalgic (music before my era ... wayyy before). Go ahead and say that music today is better (you just gotta find it).

Whatever happened to the 'Rock Star'?
Is Kanye the closest thing to that?

Where is the Hendrix? Morrison? Jagger?
Shit, Cobain may have been the last true rock star.

80s was great.. 90s was great.. by the time you get to the about 2004 and beyond? the music starts to suck because it is becoming too formulaic..
artist are not so much into being the best at their craft as much as they are trying to gain attention and make money.. there are exceptions.. but on the whole... music these days is bullsh*t..
a lot of movies are the same .. How many f*cking batman movies are we gonna see made? Its time for a new idea.. it used to be that people created new super heroes.. Nowadays we get a lot remakes of remakes..

I'd rank the 90s>80s
Also the earlier part of the 2k era still had some great stuff mainly from artists that and work that carried over from the late 90s.
Speaking of 'carrying over', I always thought music should be measured in 4 year spans and not by labeling them as entire decades. Styles and what's popular evolves and changes but it tends to last around 4 years or so (pulling shit outta my ass and from observation). The early 60s weren't like the mid and late 60s, the early 80s wasn't like the late 80s and so on. In reality, late late 60s was closer to early 70s, early 2k era was closer to late 90s etc.etc. There's artists and albums that change the course of music. Things get a bit more complicated as time passes by but are easier to trace in the earlier eras (60s and 70s).

blues super formulaic
reggae super formulaic
rock and roll super formulaic
You're missing out one key ingredient....
They were great musicians.
And I do somewhat agree that blues and reggae follow a similar format and chords. But even then, the talent to play them and more importantly, the SOUL to play them is superior to what most artists today can achieve.
Now if you're a rap fan, and want to talk trash, I'll gladly escort you out of here to keep you from getting laughed at.
Rock is the most versatile of all genres, and has gone through the most incarnations. It has the most sub genres and styles that it's hard to classify all of them. And even then, most of all of it can trace their roots back to the blues.

exactly, and those genres stagnate and die when they cease to innovate.. whose the hot blues musical artist right now??
Rock & roll died a generation ago specifically because too many groups began copying what was "hot" at the moment and let A & Rs convince them that they could be the next ____ (insert group that already did it)..
reggae been dead, except for an occasional one hit banger dance hall song.. Reggae is niche music.. there were some artists who found ways to innovate, but overall? not so much
Hip hop is headed in the same direction as rock and blues

Pharell and Kanye and Daft Punk are the new rockstars.
Trent Reznor IMO is a legit old school style rock star. He won an oscar and does mainstream cinema scores now, the whole public must know that guy.

I agree with your '4 year cycle' comment.. Music trends don't fall neatly in between decades.. genre's rise and fall at different times.. What is different these days is the lack of any new innovation on the horizon.. Money is what seems to drive a bulk of the entertainment out there when it should be a love of the craft..
I have to hope that something new and fresh (like hip hop in the early 80s) is born so we can ride the wave of great music another 30 years

Pharell is great, Kanye overrated, Daft Punk have built their empire by sampling older greats. Hell.... everybody knows I praised the shit outta 'Get Lucky' but take away Nile Rodgers and they have nada. It's basically a Nile Rodgers track, take away the robotic shit and it can easily be confused for a Nile Rodgers track circa 79.

Electronic dance music is the new rock and roll.
Like so many aspects of culture that evolve, time-consuming quality and craftsmanship begin to take a back seat to speed and convenience. You can learn to program a beat in a day, where it might take you a year at the least to learn saxophone proficiently.
And to get seen you don't have to hit the talent circuits, the dive bars, the midnight open mics, or send out demos by mail. Every joe shmoe can just spam the twitterverse with his crap.
The most commercially successful acts these days aren't the best musicians, simply the most interesting/entertaining/bizarre character gimmicks.
And people want to blame the industry and the executives but the truth is the music business has always been a business... Illegal downloading just completely changed the way the game is played. People basically brought this upon themselves when they stopped buying albums. There's no incentive to create quality albums. Just stick some shit on a stick and feed it to the public, the masses of whom have no taste anyway and won't know the difference or will know it but still won't be willing to go back to paying for anything.

I think Kanye is actually a genius and he could be a savior of hip hop.. But he talks to much and he is not focused on what made him soo famous.. Nobody gives a f*ck about Kim Kardashian, and the new yeezies and his designing career...
shut the f*ck up and make hot beats kanye.. that's what people love about you.. the music you make when you actually focus.. stop trying to convince everyone that you are already at the top of the mountain.. Just make hits and we'll tell you when you actually make it there..

I agree Kanye is really talented but frankly talent doesn't guarantee you continued success or relevance. You're better off being weird and obnoxious and controversial. In today's world, it's the only sure thing. :(
I mean look at Nas. Back when 90s hip hop was in full force and people weren't downloading, Illmatic etc. spread like wildfire. Now Nas is one of the few 'golden era' rap artists who actually gets his albums heavily promoted with billboards and commercial spots etc because he's still such an iconic figure, but it really doesn't matter much. He's statistically a has been. Kanye is probably trying to avoid the same fate.

Sorry, hes a bad rapper and sloppy producer. Dont know where I'd rank him as a producer, top 25???
But to be fair, I have to rate him as an 'artist'. I do respect him for trying to be different (by rap standards). But i stop short of calling him a genius, thats overrating him.
Sadly this generation is so hungry for a transcendent artist that he appears to be a genius.

Kanye is a better lyricist than people realize, I assume he doesnt showcase it on his albums but much like Eminem, the stuff he spits on other tracks is much better than what he spits on his own commercial albums. Even tho his subject matter and mic presence are too soft for my taste personally he can definitely rhyme. I heard it.

That's common once someone reaches "brand" level and can make more money for a project if their name is on it than some unknown.
You still have to have skill when you're coming up to get recognized in the first place.

when it comes to rapping? I think he is mediocre (at best).. he has a hot line ery now and then.. but I wouldn't think of him when it comes to top rappers..
beats and production? I think he can be excellent.. he done it numerous times.. like I said, I think he isn't focused on what made him.. he is preoccupied with being famous instead of being the best producer of music he can be.. that is where his talent is.. not rapping.. not designing.. not marrying hoes.. but focusing on producing hot music

Even then he had ghost everything, or people just assume he produced tracks and give him credit when he didnt make them, same goes for DRe i suppose. Scott Storch and others were making some of Dre's hits.

Too many >s. I prefer the variety we got in the '80s and '90s. '60s and '70s might be better, but I like the '80s and '90s more. Maybe nostalgic plays too much of a part, but I don't care. There's more artists/bands I like from those 2 decades than any other.

Yeah 60s and 70s had great music, but you can't discount the 90s. Hell even the 80s had some good stuff along side some garbage.
I don't include the 2000s because I can't objectively say anything about it. My life has been way too busy to get into new music unless it finds me (SOAD and Radiohead are a couple of examples).
