View Full Version : Starting a team would you rather have Kobe for $30M or Lebron for $20M?

Let's assume they are in their primes and it's the current CBA. Or if you want to answer it in the context of the last one that's ok too. Let's say the cap is the average of what it's been the last 5 years.
Do you think you would have a better chance to succeed if you had Kobe Bryant and paid him 30 million dollars per season or Lebron being paid 20 million dollars per season? Assume it's a five year contract.
What do you think?

Rose for 18 million.
He did have the highest selling jersey for quite a while. Everybody loves Rose.
Who cares about winning? Show me the money.

Duncan's 12mil
That's a good inclusion. But remember that's for his current level. But including him, I would state my preference like this:
Prime Lebron/20M > Current Duncan/12M > Prime Kobe 30M

1st is current Duncan quite easily, he's a true professional and when he plays he doesnt take games off
2nd is peak Kobe, one of the most electrifying players in NBA history, he would give up some of his money to sign some good teammates around him
3rd is Lebron, most likely the best player today, he takes games off which bothers me but 3rd to KB and TD is nothing to be ashamed of

Surely the salaries should be swapped as prime LeBron is clearly a superior player to prime Kobe. That would be a legit question then.

Kobe on his current contract won b2b championships without anyone taking a paycut to form a superteam. Chill out bro.

Maybe prime Lebron is better at padding stats in the regular season. Call me when Lebron averages 32+ ppg & 7+ apg in the Finals.
Kobe is the only player to ever score 600+ points in 3 straight Playoff runs & is the only player besides Jordan & West to average 33+ ppg 8+ apg in first 4 Finals games & the first player to average 30+ ppg 7+ apg in the Finals since MJ in 91.

Lebron is a stat padder, we all know that. He plays in the weak Eastern Conference, where teams under .500 make the Playoffs almost every year.
Kobe's best Playoff series trump Lebron's. Kobe at 22: 35 9 4 on 47% shooting against a 55 win team with a top 10 defense, 33 7 7 on 51% shooting In the WCF against a 58 win Spurs team that had the best defense in the league. Lebron doesn't even come close bro. Kobe averaged 29 7 6 for the most dominant Playoff team in NBA history & three-peated at the age of 23, Lebron has nothing on him.
Kobe has at least 2 Finals series that are better than Lebron's best. There's nothing to discuss.

"LeBron has worse numbers and if not, it's because he's a statpadder from a shitty conference"

Why is it Kobe at 30 mil and Lebron at 20 mil if we're putting them back at their prime? It's an obvious set up for people to choose Lebron because he's cheaper.
Depending on my market, I'll just take both and surround them with vet min role players. If both are in their prime, then they can carry the load together and win me a championship.

Kobe circa '06 on a well-built team would have been an absolute TERROR.
I'll take my chances with him.

I will take the 10M discount and sign LeBron, then I will use the 10M saved to sign a bunch of ringchasers.

Lebron 39, 8 and 8 vs a 59 win team with a top 5 defense in the 2009 ECF

What kind of question is this. Why would anyone pay MORE for the lesser player?
Surround Lebron with talent and the team will play to its potential, since Lebron is a team player. Surround Kobe with whomever, that guy will still chuck you out of contention.

maybe if this was 10 years ago with the old CBA and salary cap structure I'd think for two seconds before I took LeBron... but now? :lol
hell, there are a lot of current players that, if they were in their prime, I would take with quickness over Kobe at $20 million vs $30 million for 5 years.

Not with that kind of high usage. Generally, players using THAT much possessions are on terrible teams padding their stats. '06 playoffs kind of proved this when Kobe and the Lakers choked a 3-1 lead against a weak, Amare-less Suns team.

Kobe is my favorite player and to have him IN HIS PRIME on my team would be an absolute dream come true. Plus he is so handsome having that eye candy WHILE being the best player in the world would be just unreal. Also I would learn from the Lakers front office mistakes (Smush Parker, Kwame Brown) so that he could have a team he could win championships with IN HIS PRIME.

I'll take the one who won't leave my team. What's the point of paying $20m if he's leaving your team.
