Kobe should have saved them some cap space. At least Nash is just living out an existing deal and didn't negotiate a whole new deal.

But seriously, you take as much money as the team will give you. If you get hurt and end up not earning that money based on the value you contribute? Sorry, that's just the risk of the trade.

this is such a ridiculous, entitled point of view. He has a contract, he will attempt to fulfill it. Funny how much vitriol Nash has gotten when most (not all, but most) laker fans wont say shit about kobe negotiating a new, huge deal while he is out with injury.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I have the same viewpoint.

And it is the viewpoint of what is best for the team, the Lakers would be so much better off if Nash would retire. He is old, can't stay healthy, and it would save the Lakers money.

As for the comparison to Kobe, that's laughable. One has been in LA for 2 seasons, has been injured most of the time, and has only played 60 games so far. The other has played in LA his entire adult life and has won 5 championships for the team.

Nash was gonna get his full salary either way, the dude is done. He's finished, his career as an effective player is over. He medically retires and the Lakers can stretch out his salary against the cap for 3 seasons. So instead of a full 9 million hit next year, it's only 3 Milli. Nash reminds me of a cockaroach, who keeps trying to run instead of accepting its fate and just dying.

but, in a realistic view, why the **** would he retire and lose out on a guaranteed contract? Especially one worth $100k salary for a century? Sure, the fans of the team would like it. As a pistons fan, I would love for Josh Smith to retire. Again, its not about the longevity with the team or loyalty or any of that. Nash has a contract in hand. It wasnt signed or extended while he was injured. Its incredibly hypocritical for fans to bemoan him clogging their cap when they just massively overpaid kobe (relative to the cap and his bball level, not necc his finanical value to the franchise) WHILE he was out with injury.

Beside, you have your highest paid player saying he could come back if they weren't out of the playoff race. What kind of message does that send to the rest of the team?

Finally, according to Nash, the team basically said they didnt want him coming back too soon because they wanted to see what they had with Kendall Marshall, etc.

IMO this smacks of the same scapegoating that happened to Pau and others in the past.

The Lakers could have not played him this season instead of allowing him to play 10 games.

If he retires (not medically retires), he does not get his salary. The lakers can still try and force him to medically retire (it takes an outside medical expert), in which case none of his salary counts towards the cap. The stretch provision is only if you waive or buyout a player. Get your facts straight.

If the lakers think they could get an independent, league approved doctor to medically retire him, they should.

Well, I thought he could get his full salary if he retired.

Josh Smith is young and is his prime not a chance he would retire, but Nash is old and frequently injured and will retire soon, so that comparison did not make sense to me.

Loyalty and longevity do come into play when you are talking about contracts. Not sure where you got the idea they don't. You are right that Nash has a contract and that he has every right to play if he wants. He probably just wants to prove he can play still and be able to retire on his own terms. I just don't think he is capable, I think it is likely he is injured again.

Either way, Nash is not in the future of the team. Kobe is. Lakers organization does not want Nash on the books because he is not worth his contract, he is not a part of the future, and it would help the team financially if he was gone. The Lakers organization does want Kobe on the books because he is worth his contract because he brings in tons of money and is expected to return and play.

The Lakers gave him that salary thinking he was going to come back and play this season at a high level. He was making progress towards looking like Kobe in his final game or so before he injured his knee.

No point in Kobe returning. Nash is out there to prove he can still play and Gasol is out there to get a new contract otherwise they would be sitting too. Everyone else is out there to show what they got. This Laker team is a giant tryout right now, for the Lakers and other teams. Kobe is not going to come back to a team where most of the players and the coach probably won't be there next year, when they have no shot at the playoffs and are going for a high draft pick.

at least nash is playing even with his team in the lottery, not as selfish as some other 'injured' players on the team.

So you caught feelings for Kobe just cuz he helped you bust a nut? He's a used up wh0re that I busted my nut to 5 times. Now he's useless so its time to kick him to the curb too. Get that fakkit outta LA. Too much fresh pussay out there.

Interesting thing here, before Nash played his 10th game a reporter asked him about the stretch provision which Nash didn't know. He goes to Gary Vitti and ask if they should have a conversation about it, but Vitti said ethically they couldn't/wouldn't have that conversation.

Laker organization has good values.

It's just the Kobe fans... Nash has done nothing wrong, he's just trying to play some ball and fulfill his end of the bargain... I want him to come back, hope he gets some solid court time and both he and the Lakers have a clearer picture for this summer of what's a realistic view going into next season.

So what you're telling is if you have $9 million left on the table, and you still have a love of basketball and a love to play, you're not going to try to work to get that money and collect that?

Love how everyone gets their swipes/opinions in but ignores a real question. Both Hill and Young are expected to play tonight as well after their injuries.

Johnson however is out. Always someone out when people return. Meanwhile Kaman continues to be non existent.

Young is another. I just look at BRef and it says he last played against the Nets a month ago! As well as a poor roster, we've had countless injuries. I think every player in the rotation except Brooks and BazedGod have missed games. Thanks for answering too
