I am from Brazil so i invest on our local stock market, i bought Petrobras and Vale options. Actually i could have made some more if i had stayed on just one stock option, but i got fidgety :oldlol:
Anyways if there is one thing i learned while operating the stock market is to never look at what you could have won because no one gets all entries and exits right
And before anyone says i am lying here is the account's movements

How did you go about investing? Did you ask someone to do it or did you used a website. I am interested in investing in stocks but I don't know how to start.

stock market is a little scary right now IMO
it's at an all time high and everyone is just waiting for it to sink back down to reality...(and that's when you buy up)

playing the market can be just like sports gambling...there are safe bets where you are pretty sure to win a little and risky bets where you COULD win a lot but unlikely, and everyone thinks they know who is gonna win lol, etc

Homebroker, i started operating about 5 years ago, stopped for a while after i lost some money :lol then started again this week.
Imo, there are two ways to invest, either you care about the long term in which case you should study the companies fundamentals before buying stock, or you want short term which can be day trades or quick swing trades in which case you should learn about graphical analysis so you can identify entry and exit points.

I have no idea what stockbrokers you have in the US, but googling it seems like E-Trade is a popular one. So open an account with them, deposit your money, and they will give you access to their homebroker where you can check all stocks, options, ETF, etc that are being traded at NYSE.
They seem to be expensive though at 10$ per order so i would look around. Find an online forum where people discuss stocks and ask them, they are normally helpful.
Also, study some before just buying stock especially options, options will become worthless after some time so you have to know what you are buying or you risk losing all your money..

congrats, but in my experience until you sell, its only a paper gain. maybe you have a better investment strategy than I did.
Since I am not using it anymore, my old strategy:
1. look at the volume of trading. Try to find stocks with a huge spike in volume. Especially focusing on drug companies.
2. Buy a put option and a call option on the stock.
3. Hope that the spike in volume was caused by the leak of insider news (eg. a drug had failed a test, or had passed a test, or a company was about to be bought out, etc)
Either way that news would have resulted in a large increase or drop.

I'm always against trading on a frequent basis. Those commission fees basically kill any chance of you consistently making good money, unless you are really, really good.

so you longed some calls. there's a decay element in those options called theta. you might have intrinsic value, or you might not, depending on whether they were itm or otm. the delta gain could very well reverse in an instant if they carry high volatility. most likely, you won't care to learn what the hell these things are until that happens. but will you also make a thread if you lose $10,000?

I know about the greeks and i already liquidated the options, not going to carry them over the weekend since the risk for a reversal is too high.
Actually i am going to start operating the index futures, less risk and pretty much the same gain with leverage. Also a lot easier to analyze graphically just the index and not a bunch of different stocks.
