They'll know if they have a real chance by Wednesday. They should win their next three (Cleveland, LA Lakers, Sacramento). Atlanta plays Toronto, Phoenix and Minnesota. If they lose two of those three and the Knicks take care of business then they're one game out.

Looking at their schedules I see both teams finishing 38-44. The tiebreaker would go to the Knicks in my projection due to a better conference record since they split the four-game season series.

Why does it even matter who gets the 8 seed in the east? It's completely irrelevant, unless you find it to be a prestigious honor to get swept by the Pacers or Heat.
