View Full Version : James Harden is currently leading all guards in both PPG and True Shooting %

1st since Michael Jordan in 87-88

i was messing around on basketball reference today and noticed that Harden is leading all guards in both PPG and TS% this season. I did a search for all seasons played by guards with more than 1000 minutes played and more than 15 PPG. Jordan is the only other guard to have ever led the league in both PPG and TS% in a season in the 3-point era.

Harden also led all guards in TS% in 2011-12 and 2012-13 as well.

in 2012-13 he was 2nd in scoring among guards.

in 2011-12 his TS% was the best by any guard in any season ever (15+PPG)

I fukcing hate Hardens head-floppin', foul-shootin', no mid-range game style of play. You know what I hate most about it?

It's really effective.

So you don't respect CP3, LeBron, Wade, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin?? All those guys flop to get what they want, so if you gonna disrespect Harden then you should disrespect those guys too. It's just how the league is nowadays, don't hate the player hate the game.

he averages 8.6 free throw attempts on 9.8 two-point field goal attempts. Dude basically gets to the line on every shot he takes within the 3 point arch, and he's a +.85% FT shooter.... and he takes roughly 7 three's a game (something Jordan never came close to)... so yeah, he's got a "high TS%".

Great player, certainly an AS, don't feel like he's as great as stats suggest though.

To be fair, every non and-1 shooting foul grants you 2 shots. So it's more like every other shot he takes results in a foul.

Harden was pretty clutch vs. the Spurs in 2012 but choked against the Heat. Also choked vs. the Thunder last year.

I honestly think Dwight is the key to your guys' success, not Harden.

If Harden's three-ball isn't falling and the refs don't give him touch fouls, he's pretty much invisible out there. We saw it happen against the Heat. It also happened against OKC last season.

How did choke last year? He was gassed from playing 40 minutes a night carrying the offense. And how is losing choking? Even without Westchuck OKC had a better team. This year how they played without Westchuck proved that.

This, not to mention he is invisible on defense, you can't be a superstar if you play only one aspect of the game.

He actually has a midrange game this year clusterfcks. And he's a great passer, he can impact games like that. He also plays passing lanes very well and leads the NBA in fastbreak points because of his steals.

Best SG in the league by default, if Wade was healthy you know that Wade would be #1.

Also Harden is in the top 7-10 range, not gonna doubt that

I gotta admit...I HATED Harden earlier in the season. Anyone who's read any of my posts know this.

I've come around since then. His D is still nothing to brag about, but he's actually really good at defending the post (which is why he looked so good against Kobe back in his OKC days since Kobe would only try to post him up all the time). He still gets lost when his man doesn't have the ball and his idea of help defense is to point at someone else on the court...but it's not as bad as it used to be.

But this is guy is straight up lethal on offense. Probably the best scorer in the game next to Durant. Yeah, he flops and sells, but he gets a TON of "and1's" with full contact...he really does excel at body control and getting the shot to fall even when bumped in mid air.

I didn't realize he was that efficient. I never bother to look at his eFG or TS stats. Wow. The stats show something completely different from the eye test of watching his game imo. Not a huge fan of his game, but can't deny that it's efficient. The dude can hit his FTs and is solid at the 3pt line, which represents in the advance metrics stats.

You think he should be averaging 12-14 assists in the playoffs? WTF, only Chris Paul averages that much, even the vaunted Lebron with his excellent playmaking skills can't average that.

Also, people never mention this, but Harden is actually very good at finishing with contact. There are loads of ticky-tacky fouls, but he also converts them into and-1, which is even better.

the entire rocket's team will shrivel come playoff basketball. looked what happened in their 4th quarter against the heat. all the easy baskets were taken away and the rockets struggled to score while the heat went on a tear. the rockets have a team where their star sg and their star center does not know how to play effective half-court offense consistently.

Derozan on average attempts only .8 less FTs per game than Harden yet I never see people complain about him. Derozan settles way more for jump shots too and has much worse percentages all around.

Those who hate Harden are just looking to hate on him for anything, and since his efficiency has been through the roof in the last two months, this is all they have.

He's 4th in FTA, but 1 of 9 players averaging more than 7 a game.

Gotta hate on him for something, and it sure isnt going to be his scoring, rebounding, passing, steals, or shooting percentage.... so you hate on him for being fouled.
