View Full Version : In 50 years, will AI be the player of the 00s

No not because he was better or greater than players like KB or Lebron, but simply because of how iconic he is.
Great players get remembered for their influences, not their real play, would you agree? I have no doubt that in a few decades, there would be more and more extraordinary talents that may surpass the likes of Bron and Kobe, its a shame players these days no longer have an unique image.
Obviously the players have to be great at the game first though, no one would give a shit if AI was just another scrub,
what says you?

Yeah definitely. I can see kids saying "I crossed you up like Allen Iverson!" in 50 years. Kids and teens will think of kobe and AI mainly when you bring up the 2000s

Ask yourself, who was the player of the 60s, then the 70s, then the 80s, then the 90s.
You'd likely answer with, Russell or Wilt, Kareem, Magic or Bird, Michael.
What do all those players have in common?
Okay. Now, what is the one thing Iverson lacks as an All Time great?
Yeah. Iverson isn't even close to the player of the 2000s. Not even close.

i agree with op at some point, russell > wilt and 75% of knowledgeable nba fans know this. now go ask a casual fan and 90% will say wilt with some that didn't even heard of russell. ai will be remembered as a great player will never be forgoten.
Lol, I don't think of him unless he is mentioned already. When I reflect on the past, championship winning players come to mind first.

I respect his game a lot, but he is THE reason why stupid kids who don't have real, legit ball handling skills (no palming, no carrying) can get to the rim at all in the playgrounds. After almost every move, at the back of my mind I think "carry", but I don't call em though.

this was actually my reasoning for making this thread though. Not a lot of people nowadays care about the 60s and the 70s, you can bash the casual fans but its the truth, people nowadays rarely remember kareem as a part of the bucks.
who the greater player is between Wilt and Iverson isnt really a question, that just shows how easily players accomplishments are forgotten. More and more great players will come along, but not many will have an image as iconic as the 80s magic/bird and 90s mike era.

Im not going to argue with this, and I hate how people would try to pull of idiotic moves or dribble for 30sec than jack up a three, but your statement just shows how strong of an influence he is. Good or bad, I think he is up the as one of the most influential players of all time.

Um he is iconic in his way. Everyone one remembers him for his crossovers. When i think of the 00 era though my mind comes on Kobe as well as DUncan and Shaq

World wide yes he will. Even though Kobe is recognized globally as well, not as much as Allen Iverson was. There are casual sports fans who still remember and know Allen Iverson although they have never watched basketball in their life.

Player of the 00's is probably pushing it, but he will absolutely be remembered.
He was pretty much the face of the league after MJ was gone in terms of popularity and how iconic he was.

His "practice" rant will be remembered more than his game. Legendary.

I always thought you were a straight shooter...
AI is a beast. It really depends. I don't think AI will be the player of the 00, in terms of the media because the media has a funny way of sweeping people like AI under the rug. But in terms of people who witnessed it... and word of mouth, I think he will be one of the most talked about.
I dunno about all of these decade rankings, though. He did lead an ass team to the finals (don't come up here and try to say they were 'good defenders', they don't even have one knock down shooter, not one go-to post presence, either), he did cross MJ, he did wear clothes that made the commish sweat. I think his cultural impact will be remembered. But it's funny that they ousted him and tightened the reigns.
The will never let someone like AI get popular again.
