with Afghan relations than Obama.

I'm not even mad at the 'trained ape' comment, since a lot of people could use that regularly.... but for someone from the Bush Administration to accuse anyone else of poor diplomacy is outrageous.
don't they know they made the whole world despise us? :confusedshrug:

Once again
The same interests are behind both parties.
The window dressing is simply token. Republicans in office need to push anti-gay legislation in order to "look republican" and keep their base focused on the ways in which their party is doing right by them, Democrats get into office and they focus on championing gay rights, sometimes to absurd degrees, and that way their base continues to identify with THEM despite major atypical democrat positions it wants to get away with.
People are most concerned with what is concrete and in front of them. Economy and foreign policy is vague and is hard to pinpoint how it affects individual persons. Abortion laws mean either the girl next door is or isnt allowed to get one, period. Its effects are more obvious and immediate. So even though the forest is generally what shapes the course of our entire lifespan, the people stay lookin at the trees, because theyre extremely impressionable, insecure, and long to be shepherded by and large, and do not generally have the wherewithal to make collective sacrifices immediately for long term good.

The world has always hated the USA. And Rumsfeld's comment is spot on. And the Bush administration did an excellent job.

The world definitely didn't always hate the US. France was giving their babies to the liberating American army so they could kiss them during WW2.

I think Rummy was one of the worst cabinet members of any presidency. Definitely gave Bush a bad name shortly after 9/11 and after the war with his pompous rhetoric. For as much flack as Bush takes, the rest of his cabinet was pretty damn good.

Don't remember many Afghans hating the US in the 70s and 80s. Honestly Afghans hate their own more so than they can really hate Americans.

Afghanistan was controlled by the Taliban. Pretty sure the Taliban hated everything about American culture.
The Middle East is so screwed up though cause for as much as they hate us, like you said, they tend to hate each other just as much if not more. Every day some dumb bastard is blowing himself taking with him another 15 or so dumb bastards. Let them kill each other off or we'll gladly help you do it for you.

To be fair a chimpanzee can be one of those cute centerpoint things that are so distracting in a public setting that the first thing two antagonistic dudes do is bond and comment over it.
So I see it as a backhanded compliment.
Kind of like how good perfumes united SubSaharan Negroes and insane zealot Arabs.

Rumsfeld says a "trained ape" could do better diplomacy
personally, i'm not seeing donald's logic. i mean, rumsfeld himself never attained the discretionary ability of a trained ape himself, so who is this comment coming from, exactly?
is it rumsfeld's handlers, another right-wing lobby, a bunch of idiots who drank too much tequila and want the public to handle the vomitorium duties?
WHO ACTUALLY SAID THIS, GODZUKI?

Frenemies are part and parcel of real American policy. Once America has no more use for you there will be a changing of the guard. What's so wrong with that? When you're number one and can create your own options like this the world and liberals will hate you but real Americans won't.

Rumsfeld was brought in by Cheney to counter Colin Powell's influence. The two guys under Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Feith were also disasters.
I don't see how can you view Bush's reputation independently of Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld was a Republican rock star in 2002 and 2003 and Bush agreed with his rhetoric. Bush allowed Rumsfeld to act the way he did, big on bluster and terrible on execution. Bush was so into him that Rumsfeld would even go against decisions Bush had made, but he never paid a price for it and that is on Bush. Andrew Card urged Bush to fire Rumsfeld after the 2004 elections, after it clear most of what he said didn't pan out, but Bush refused and we were stuck with two more years of his crappy leadership at the Pentagon. Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld tended to be on the same side of the issue most of the time. They also tended to be fantastically optimistic about the Iraq War and wouldn't when they were wrong and wouldn't change their policy until years later. Bush basically didn't get a realistic cabinet until well into his second term.
We should be hearing even more about this soon, since Erroll Morris's documentary on Rumsfeld, The Known Unknown, (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/moviesnow/la-et-mn-errol-morris-unknown-known-movie-theaters-reviews-20140326,0,645404.story#axzz2xBoRmgOZ) just premiered.
