Run down:

Halfway finished with college, basically been coasting through this point. Got all of my general education courses done. Problem is I have no idea what I want to major in. Have my college paid for because of elite testing scores and shit, but if I just dropout, pretty sure I have to pay for my tuition, SO...

What should I major in? I'd prefer something easy to finish college out, something flexible in regards to works for various job fields, and perhaps something I'd work lower hours in?

Considering a bunch of shit right now:
Sports Management (this is relative to my interests)
Communication (seems to be easy and apply to many job fields)
Music Composition (learned piano and guitar at a young age so shit comes easy to me)

Only thing is, I don't suck at math, but really hate doing that shit, so any engineering shit would be a no go.

Any advice out there?

Drop out. Move to Colorado, get an easy job at Culvers's or Wendy's or something. Smoke bud in the mountains every day.

Communication is one of the biggest cop outs I've seen as far as higher learning goes. It's about as relevant as an arts degree really.
I'd stray away from something like management of any sort, including business too.
As much as you hate engineering, it is something to push for IMO. Economics, Engineering or Law would be a decent pathway to follow IMO.

If you're looking for a degree that will pave many pathways for you, do Economics, not Communications like you suggested. It is a far more respected and well looked upon degree.
If you're up for it, go for Engineering though. It is a lot of work though.

I think you'd be great in Sports Management. I've noticed that you're pretty intelligent when you make long posts that argue about something.

This job pays really well. Depending on the level of your education, you can get payed up to $100,000+ every year.

Sports Management is a worthless degree and highly competitive. Look how many sports team are in this world with very few jobs. Do you think a guy like Phil Jackson or Mitch Kupchak got a sports management degree? Nope. They get these position based on their past career and connections.

If you are going to handle the business aspect of a sports franchis? You are better off getting a degree in accounting and getting your CPA license. That will land you a front office of a sports team more than a guy with a sports management guy. Essentially you are dealing with numbers and figures.

If this sports management degree is geared towards representation, such as being an agent. It is highly competitive and you almost have to really recruit high school and college student. A lot of shady dealings that go around. It is a crap degree because most agents have some sort of law degree. Contractual law to be exact.

I have seen the curriculum with Sports Management and it doesn't teach you anything beneficial outside of sports. At least with a legitimate business degree such as Finance or Accounting you have a better position to be CFO of a company.

Damn, that seems spot on about a sports management major. Only chance in hell at getting an NBA job IMO would be like being good enough and working your way up until you are 50, or getting a management internship somewhere (Rockets do this for example) and being badass enough to stick around (this is how OKC GM Sam Presti got hired with the Spurs). Odds of either happening are so small though.

Might cross that one off the list.

If you're trying to be employable, those are three of the worst degrees you could possibly have.

Music composition sounds like it could be fun, though.

I can tell you one thing, both of my parents and some relatives work in the Medical Sales industry.

They hire people as long as you have a 4-year diploma. Could be in anything, History, Sports Management, Math, etc.

Can't speak for any other businesses but I'm assuming they are the same way.

Pick something that is interesting to you.

The real reason why employers are looking for someone with a degree because if you can commit yourself to a 4-year institution and follow rules then you can follow their rules. It is like the prison system, you get institutionalized so they can boss us sheeps around.

At least that is how I see it.

To be honest, anyone can be an entrepreneur with hard work and luck. You don't need an institution to tell you that. While being institutionalized, don't lose your soul to the system.

Sports Management (this is relative to my interests)
Communication (seems to be easy and apply to many job fields)
Music Composition (learned piano and guitar at a young age so shit comes easy to me)?

You need to think about what you actually do with each of these degrees.

What would you do with a Music Composition degree? Teach? You have to consider if you would like teaching. Becoming a professional musician is insanely competitive. Sports Management is probably competitive too.

If you chose Communication, I would combine it with a minor or a double major in another discipline.

Any interesting in coding? Lots of computer jobs out there. Any young person who has the brains and doesn't have any other compelling interests should consider this.

Are they hiring Sales People? Sales is really about personality, more than a specific skill set. So they know what they are hiring for, but it's not predicted by your degree.

but if I just dropout, pretty sure I have to pay for my tuition, SO...

You might be able to pause though. If you go to the college and explain, you're not sure what you want to do see if you could take a year off and then come back with your benefits intact. Perhaps there's even jobs/internships you can do.

My advice is if you are figuring yourself out, you might as well stay in college and do it. If you quit, it's harder to return. And there is value in a 4 year degree, in that most jobs you will want to do will look for that. Once you have career experience, it matters less.

Try to get some internships/real job experience as soon as you can, so you can see what type of stuff you like.

Most majors are worthless because they are very over-satured and won't get you a job. Sports management is a very hard field. You often have to have connections to get anywhere in that field. Most sports management majors can't find career related jobs. A communication major is worthless. Music is tough as well.

Research it heavily. Don't go by what the college tells you as they are a for profit business that will tell you that every major is great because they want as many customers aka students as possible. Don't trust what BS corporate sites like yahoo tell you as well about "hot" majors. They are paid shills. Also don't trust what the older generations say because back when they graduated any major could get a job, but it is different these days. Example: Before 2008 an average accounting grad with an undergrad degree could get a staff accounting job, but now we have many students with masters, a CPA license, and good GPAs that cannot find accounting work. 20-30 years ago it was even easier. So if you ask an accounting grad from 1998 they would recommend you accounting. Ask recent grads or research it online.

I was in the same boat as you. My college was paid for because of scholarships and I actually earned a lot of extra scholarship money. I majored in accounting, which according to older people and the college was "hot" and I was in a school that was known for accounting...I had above average grades and previous internship experience (that I got through my dad's CPA) yet I cannot even find a free internship let alone a job and I passed most of my CPA exams. Most of my classmates are working non accounting related jobs.

Now granted I didn't pay for college and hate accounting, so I'm fine with it but if I had to redo it I would research heavily before selecting a major. I hear the technology and IT fields are good (but again research it) along with oil and gas fields.

Assuming you're not trolling I'd do some research into the fields that are up and coming in the next 5 years. As other people have said major in economics, finance or accounting. You don't necessarily have to be good at math in these majors. I'd suggest looking into IT or Data Analytics.

Don't get a degree and hopefully find a career, look for the career first and then see what you degree you need to get.

1. Look at the market place. What is in demand in your area? Sometimes you don't even need a 4 year degree for the job; sometimes all you need is a certificate you can get at a trade school.

Here is a little secret: what is in demand will pay a lot higher than what is not.

2. If you don't know what is in demand and want to get a degree that is open ended, then don't go for a degree that is specific to a field of study, but go for a general set of skills, for example, management, accounting, mathematics, and something as simple as microsoft computer office skills are so broad almost any company will hire you on the spot if you have a degree or certificate. If you want to work for yourself, then do what you love, but if you want to work for a big company, then work on the skills they are looking for.

My ideas are unique and different, but it's practical. Looking for a job in demand and then attaining the required skills to get the position? That's common knowledge dumbsh*t. For example, if a job requires knowledge of microsoft word, powerpoint, etc. then you are more likely to get that position with a 6 month certificate than someone who got a bachelors in music.

IamRAMBO24
03-29-2014, 02:10 AM
I know idiots like you have been taught all your life by a failed educational institution to just duke it out with some sh*tty degree and hope for the best. That's not how the real world works. The goal should be the starting point: figure out what job you want, figure out how much you want to get paid, and then figure out what degree will allow you to attain that job. You can get yourself a psychology or music degree, but will the career that is available and is in demand looking for those types of degree?

You can't just say I"m gonna do this or that without looking at the market place first. What jobs are available in your area? What companies are the best to work at? Do you want to be self employed? What do you want your career to be? That is the question you should be asking first and foremost. I mean it's kind of pointless to get a degree and then find out later you can't get a job with it because the field is over saturated.

You obviously don't know sh*t about the market place. You will be surprise how companies are looking for microsoft office skills since it is the standard for most companies in america, and if you work for a big company, these jobs pay pretty well.

Companies are looking for immediate skills; and for example, like I said management skills, if you are certified as a manager, some companies will hire you straight into management, and this certification takes less than a year in some programs. Sure beats your bachelors in the archaeology of rocks, which is useless to the company, and you'll definitely be overlooked by someone who has the skills they want, but didn't go to school as long as you did.

I have a bachelors. Graduated with honors. Attained a great career (not job). If I knew what I'm telling you kids right now, the road would of been a lot easier for me.

You got to study the market place; understand what jobs are in demand; figure out what companies are on the rise in the place you want to work at. For example, you would be better off collecting cans than being a doctor in San Fransico since the field is over saturated. You wouldn't want to get a psychology degree if you're in silicon valley so on and so forth. Figure out what the market place demands. Maybe you don't even need a bachelors; maybe that six figure salary only requires a specific certification that takes less time. Work smarter, not harder. Sure a lot of companies will hire you if you have a bachelors degree, but what I'm proposing is to figure out what specific degree the company is looking for and to target those degrees instead of something random like a BA in music.

DouchebagWallaces and Euroleague are DEFINITELY related. Both are true a$$holes who call people trolls and idiots for no reason.

Thanks.

We're just trying to help out the OP and dude is coming in and calling people all sorts of names without any substance to back it up. I don't mind being called an idiot, but what bothers me is the constant trolling with absolutely no effort in putting out a strong argument.

Calm down. This doesn't have to be a d*ck fighting contest. Nobody has to be right. The idea is to just have a discussion and help the OP out. Even if the idea is wrong, the act of debating can lead to new avenues of thought.

So I ask you again, will you please man up and have a proper discussion? Thanks.

Oh my God. Fckin vampire DWallaces asking for proof of people's degrees and shit again like its 2010, get a grip. People have opinions and real life circumstances that were gained without some organized university's presence or guidance. Doesn't make them clueless or ignorant all the time.

Sheesh this albino is really reverting back to his days of posting pictures of his educational history onto the OTC by tryin to get other to do it, that's sad. The posters here are not you circa 2010 when u just had to show us ur credentials like its that serious to us.

U may be educated well in ur field and work hard but asking for people to post pics of diplomas and engagement rings for ur own personal 'proof' is the mark of a real sad sack loser.

Wallaces, u may want to seriously consider an extended hiatus from the oTc. It's for your own good. Your history of trying to mesh this message board into real life tangibility or consequence ( calling starface, having posters look at ur educational history records, etc.) is disconcerting to say the least.

Hope u can one day become a well adjusted man and not one that harbors such sick impulses to degrade and one up your peers, electronically or otherwise.

I'm going to pray for you, hope it helps.

I would think an educated man would have some explored evidence or reinforcement before reaching such a conclusion.

Nah it's just your posts suck. U used to be somewhat clever and snarky to add a little entertainment value for the rest of us, now there's nothing charming about your input. U act like a 70 year old grouch who tragically lost their wife. Just pure bitterness, like battery acid run thru ur veins.

Now u just provide nothing but faux elitism and look for every opportunity to shout down other grown men who may have diff experiences and convictions than you. Not the mark of an enlightened individual at all.

Not that but your overall posting style indicates a lack of much going on in your life. You might have some mediocre 30,000 a year job with an ugly girlfriend or hell, you could be some brad pitt type. I could definitely be wrong. But I think it's obvious you fall under the former :oldlol:

Completely agree, though by the sounds of it, OP is quite clever.

From what I've gathered, Engineering is one of the hardest courses out just in terms of pure course work and workload. If you can dedicate yourself to that, you should, since I have never met an Engineer with a poor wage. Well, not here in Australia at least. 6 figures is the go...
Not sure how the Australian currency workss, but in the US, 40k is minimum and less than 10 percent (not an exact figure, just one based on old research) gets over 100k

I get what everyone is saying about being a slave to the system and shit like that. I agree with rambo's views on education in america being mostly pointless. It's just when you are 17, graduate from HS and don't know what the hell you want to do, with good enough grades and a high ass ACT/SAT score to have college paid for, it's hard as hell not to just go to college.

Still have no idea what the hell I want to do, just figure I might as well finish out with a 4 year degree to, at the least, guarantee me a lower middle class lifestyle.

you're gonna get a shitty job you hate either way, just pick whatever degree you think will be easiest to complete and maybe lead to a better paying job, then travel as much as you can before you start selling your time to the machine until you die. but you're not gonna excel at anything enough for your education to really matter so don't over think it. just get it done and consume until you expire.
