In terms of 'artistry' i think Wade has to be up there for his ability to pull off moves like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbOeNlvsJ9M
on a regular basis. Obviously MJ is also up there, and Parker's ingenuity around the basket is remarkable. I wouldn't put LBJ in there, because although he is one of the most effective finishers ever, his powerful style simply isn't as aesthetically pleasing as the others' ability slither and glide to the basket, passing through the smallest gaps with ease and finishing with a large array of different moves around the basket.

I always thought Tim Hardaway had nice floaters/layups...
he could put alot of touch on the ball and always put it just outta reach of the defenders hands....He was only 6' so he had to lay it up most of the time...and he often started from further back and put up beautiful long floaters/layups

While Rose gets a ton of crap on this site (some deserved), there is no doubt he has jaw dropping body control in the air. His hang time alone puts him on the top of the list.
PG - Rose, Parker, Iverson
SG - MJ, Wade
Forwards - Dr. J, Kobe (occasionally)
inclinerator
03-28-2014, 02:00 PM
i like parker, cuz he has that floater
MJ
Kobe
Rose
If by artists you mean how the layups look aesthetically, these three are my favorites. The body control of MJ and Kobe in the air and the way they finish.
For Rose, it's the way he contorts/torques his body to make insane layups. It's ridiculous.

There's one he did against the Cavs in 92 playoffs I believe, where he made a spin move from the left side and made literally 3 moves in the air before squeezing off a layup vs a Cavs big in a really tight space. It's one of my faves but I hardly ever see it. Anyway, here's more:cheers:

lol clearly you never saw who he was trying to carbon copy with his layups, Baylor, Hawkins, Gervin, Erving... some of those guys pulled moves around the glass even MJ couldn't duplicate. Sorry, you just must not know the history of the game if you think MJ shot the prettiest layups of all time. Players were pulling his moves on NBA courts 25 years before he hit the league, because they weren't actually his moves - they were the moves of players that came before him.

Really this.
MJ had both the most graceful layups and he wasn't too shabby when he wanted to throw it down with aggression. Dr J also is up there in those two categories. When I think about LeBron, I don't think of him as very graceful around the rim, powerful is more the word I describe his finishing.

I'm sorry, I'm just not following the logic here. MJ can't have the prettiest looking layups, because they've been done before?
I guess Ray Allen doesn't have the prettiest jumpshot since people have been shooting jumpshots for 80+ years.
I guess VC doesn't have the prettiest windmills, since Dominique was the one who made it famous.
I see what you're saying, he didn't do these moves first, maybe you don't want to give him the nod for being creative (which he certainly was) but in my opinion it doesn't matter who does it first, it's who does it best, and I've got Jordan.

Isn't there like a 20 minute video of MJ doing ridiculous layup one after another, that would be circus shots for almost every other player to ever pick up a basketball?
I think Parker is the best right now. Not as sexy as D Rose, but he's incredibly efficient at high difficulty layups. Also has the best floater in the NBA by miles...
Steph has the best finger roll. Seen him do it from the free throw line in traffic, the ball sails 14+ feet high and swishes. Ridiculous.
Monta is pretty sick, too, at the circus stuff.

Scottie Pippen: He used his length better than anyone when it came to making lay ups. Could just go around or over pretty much any player and he had a really nice soft touch. He made every lay up look effortless.

5. Lebron James

I don't really see Lebron as a GOAT layup artist. He too stiff to do things like MJ, Tony or Kobe.
He's more of a power player to Rose's finesse for example.
For me though I would say IVerson, Rose, Kobe, Parker.

Really?, Really!?...Scottie Pippen is my favorite player of all time, but I rarely actually give up an opinion unless I see something that needs to be addressed. You are one of the biggest Jordan stans on here and you are going at me? :oldlol: Anyone that says Scottie Pippen wasn't one of the best finishers ever is an idiot. Whether with a lay up (like this thread is about) or Dunk he is, period. With his length he could take huge strides off the dribble and basically put up a layup if the inside defenders were there or not because he was so long and athletic.
Hmmm...what does 'Flash' have to do with anything? He's one of my favorite players of all time, but I really don't know what the hell he has to do with what I posted? Whatever...go light a candle and pray for an hour to MJ and you'll be alright.

Good post...I agree...Scottie is one of the best finishers of all time...
I definitely think Pippen is one of the greatest finishers ever. Particularly dunking. I'm not going to sit here and hear anyone call him the GOAT layup artist though. Because he's not. Partly due to smaller player's necessities to finish in the paint. MJ, D. Rose, Kobe, Wade, Iverson, TP, hell Tim Hardaway all superior lay up artists.

For current players, I think Kyrie Irving deserves mention.
He puts some pretty amazing english on the ball, which gives him the ability to finish at awkward, seemingly impossible angles. Most impressive, he can do it effectively with either hand.

He has also perfected this high dribble, step-through which he often uses on the break.
