It used to be that the shooting guards were the most explosive and nasty scorers on the court (MJ & Kobe nomeansno Bryant). But it seems the evolution of the game has allowed the elite and uber scorers to move up to the small forward position.

Best player in the NBA is a 3. The best scorer is a 3. And the Spurs have been undefeated since they got their indispensabe 3 back.. Center? Power Forward.. Not anymore...

What say you?

3s are generally the most versatile, but they are definitely not the most important.

IMO no, just because LeBron and Durant are the 2 best players and both happen to play SF I don't think that makes the position the most important. Its still PG IMO. CP3 is a better facilitator than both combined. Tony Parker's play style has always been a factor for the Spurs. Steve Nah turned Phoenix around. Jason Kidd made the Nets relevant in the early 2000s and hit big shots in the 2011 Finals.

On D its still the C and only PF has a chance of taking that crown. Cs are usually the biggest players on the floor and as such it is harder to score in the paint when they're there. They are also usually the best rebounders

Yes because with more and more stretch forwards in the league and more teams going with a smaller line up, the versatility of the SF position makes them more important for defensive assignments.

No. Lebron is just the most important player in the league. He just happens to be a SF

Heck Boris Diaw can play some 3. I'm agree, with small ball and the like the 3 is now the gold standard.

I think it's still SG/Big. Have a great combo of both and you'll be an automatic force.

No. It just happens to be the position with the most talent right now. Everything being equal I'm taking a center everytime.

Nah, the guard positions are the most important right now.

Lebron and Durant are the best, but that's just two players.

There's is not most important position. They are all important and each position has it's place in each system/on each team. This is just silly and sounds like some dumb Espn topic.

LOL at SG... was never a deep position.

At one point you had prime Kobe, Tmac, carter, iverson, Ray Allen, Wade, Roy, Redd etc all in the league, at the same time. Everything single one of them could be the best SG in the league today, if that ain't deep idk what is.

Prime Jason terry would be a top 3 SG today.

Well if you have Lebron / Durant there.... sure... :D

The most important position is where the best player are. If suddenly all the top players are PFs, has PF become the most important position? SGs? Cs? PGs? It changes all the time.

SF actually makes sense from a defensive standpoint now though. SG's are taller today than they were earlier and PF's aren't as big.

Meanwhile SF's have grown a little and become the most versatile position defensively.

center is no longer the most important position in the modern NBA.

At one point Bird was the best player in the game with (arguably) King being the best scorer, also with dudes like Dantley, Wilkins or English, you had Pressey who was very all-around and major for the Bucks, Erving still around, so on... So I don't know about that "evolution" of the game lol.
