Well, conservatives, congratulations! You finally have someone to represent you besides all those socialist liberals on those other networks.
Colbert is a hero that isn't ashmaed of America.

They lost!! BIG TIME! Now Colbert has a much bigger forum on network television to spout his conservative nonsense.

i'm not a big fan of Colbert, but i wasn't a big fan of Jon Stewart either. i thought they always got over-credited for their sarcasm or dry wit. Colbert more than Stewart tho.
then again there arenn't many other candidates out there it seems. Tonight Show is the big one they all want, and i guess Letterman's spot would be next most desired slot. I can't think of many good candidates for it that are available. I wonder who else they were considering or were interested.

Why pick a guy with a fake personality to do the show? Terrible idea.

I've seen enough of Colbert over the years where he's played his personality up the way it is without necessarily taking the perspective his Colbert Report Character always does, that I'm not totally against the idea of this working.
But I will say that was the first thing I though too. The guy you're hiring has been playing a character for a decade. And now you're pressing him into a more mainstream format. Can he come out of it? How good will he be out of it?
But I like the guy, and I like the idea of more variety in the late night comedy marketplace.

Hate the idea.
Not because I don't like Colbert, but because I'm actually a big fan. I'd be surprised if moving to a network doesn't completely dumb down and kill the creativity of the show.
Terrible news.

Not sure I like it. Stephen Colbert IS Stephen Colbert, the character. Though he definitely has the intellect, wit and charisma to take over for Letterman. Tough assignment for him!
Another name I had heard being thrown around is Craig Ferguson. Would have liked him to get some more recognition, though he probably does work best as the late night underdog/outsider. He's IMO the funniest of all late night host. Best monologues and interviews for sure and not as over-produced as Jimmy Kimmel

most people with that much talent don't want to play the same role forever. his character will be missed, but this probably had to happen one day.
anyway, he and his staff have a year to develop a top-notch show. i'm sure he'll be fine. in fact he'll probably be the most talented dude in the genre, although whether that's enough to beat fallon is unclear. i mean, when a doofus like leno is top dog for so long, you know it's not about talent.
stewart and some other people have said that colbert has gears that the public hasn't seen yet. i believe them.
when are they gonna get a black host for these late night tv shows?

This. He is acting every time he's on camera. I don't think he's ever been himself in front of the camera.

I think the talk show industry is still trying to recover from the four months Magic Johnson's "Magic Hour" was on the air. J/S
