View Full Version : The EuroLeague effect

As we all know, Vassillis Spanoulis was a complete and utter bust in the NBA. Not even our resident V-Stan, Euroleague, could deny that. However, he won the 2012-13 EuroLeague Final 4 MVP.

Here are his NBA stats in 31 games with the Houston Rockets, where he averaged 8.8MPG:
2.7PPG 0.7RPG, 0.9APG, 0.2SPG, 0.0BPG 0.9TOPG, .319 FG% and .172 3PT%

Here are his Euroleague stats in 21 games with Olympiacos where he averaged 27.2MPG:
14.9PPG, 1.9RPG, 4.7APG, 0.5SPG, 0.0BPG, 2.8TOPG .521 FG% and .351 3PT%

Euroleague (the poster) has called Spanoulis the 3rd best player in the world after LeBron James and Kevin Durant. I decided to compare him to a player his size. Stephen Curry is the highest rated guard in the NBA in terms of WS. He is 4th behind Durant, James and Kevin Love with 12.1 WS.

Here are Curry's 2014 NBA stats for the Golden State Warriors in 74 games so far, averaging 36.4MPG:
23.5PPG, 4.2RPG, 8.5APG, 1.6SPG, 0.2BPG, 3.7TOPG, .468FG% and .418 3PT%

Now here is the EuroLeague effect. Spanoulis' stats all increased by a large margin. Part of this can be attributed to an increase in minutes, but his efficiency also increased dramatically. What I did was divided his EL averages by his NBA averages to get a multiplier, and subtracted his NBA shooting %s from his EL shooting %s. I multiplied Curry's NBA averages by the EuroLeague Multiplier (ELM) and added the difference between the shooting %s. Here are his projected EL stats:

129.7PPG, 11.4RPG, 44.4APG, 4.0SPG, 0.2BPG, 11.5TOPG, .670 FG% and .597 3PT%

The turnovers jump out immediately but I can attribute this to Curry going into "Globetrotter mode" trying circus tricks with the ball to entertain the crown, or simply giving the opposition the ball in an attempt to make the game more even.

ISH, what do you think of the ELM?

(FYI, here are the multipliers: x5.5 for points, x2.7 for rebounds, x5.2 for assists, x2.5 for SPG, x0.0 for BPG, x3.1 for turnovers, +.202 for FG% and +.179 for 3PT%)

fatigue factor puts it at 106.2 PPG in the Euroleague for Curry.

The EuroLeague 3 point line is shorter than the NBA line so it would be like a mid-range jumper for him

I'll see if I can find the EuroLeague averages for things like assists. If I find those I'll do it. Curry's PER now is 23.7, so as a guess I'd just add up all the digits in his birthday (March 14 1988) which is 43. Sounds about right.

I've found the numbers I need to calculate uPER (unadjusted PER) but I don't know whether I'm supposed to use averages or totals for the stats such as lgPTS and tmAST. Anyone know?

You know, with the 3s made and assists Curry would get, a PER of 2005 probably isn't as ridiculous as it sounds

There is no such thing as superiority complex, only inferiority.
If you really superior in something (like Curry per in EL) then you maybe have superiority arrogance, which is sometimes a healthy thing.

OT:
nice math, I wish I could do the same for Belov (introduced to him by EL as the best player ever) but he never played in the NBA.

I know this is a joke post, but the math doesn't work. You are getting a multiplier from numbers on a different per minute basis.

Example... 2.7 ppg in the NBA was in only 8.8 minutes. 14.9 ppg in Euroleague was in 27.2 minutes. You'd have to adjust the ppg on a per-minute basis before you can get a multiplier.

So for example, it would be:

2.7/8.8 = 0.31 points per minute in the NBA.

0.31 points x 27.2 minutes = 8.4 ppg Euroleague equivalent.

14.9 ppg / 8.4 = 1.8 <<< That means 1.8 points are scored in Euroleague for every 1 point scored in the NBA.

So now on to Steph Curry...

23.5 ppg / 36.4 minutes = 0.65 points per minute in the NBA.

0.65 x 27.2 minutes = 17.68

17.68 adjusted for Euroleage by multiplying by 1.8 = 31.8 ppg in Euroleague.

So Curry could be expected to average 31.8 ppg in Euroleague in 27.2 minutes per game.

Curry would also have 10.8 assists in Euroleague using V-Span's NBA stats as a baseline.

31.8 ppg and 10.8 assists.

The key phrase was "joke post". I'm well aware that EL plays fewer minutes than the NBA, I was even going to incorporate that into the PER calculation.

I didn't go missing either, I haven't been in this thread in 3 days.

Also Euroleague plays 4 10 minute quarters, so his per 40 would be 46.8
