YouTube Bob Cousy and tell me what you think he'd do today. This scrub was considered "great" in Russell's era. Goes to show the garbage the way overrated Mr. Russell faced. A one handed chest high dribbling goofball is called the Houdini of the Hardwood:oldlol:
Gary Payton would have dat scrub crying all night and in a fetal position.

Nobody still thinks Cousy is a GOAT PG. A pioneer no doubt, but Rondo is better than him. Still gotta show the man respect for what he did for the game.

Of course Cousy's game doesn't translate to the modern era. The guy played 60 years ago, what do you expect?
Do you think LeBron James' game will translate to the NBA in 2074? Maybe. Maybe not.
Bob Cousy was a pioneer, one of the first great dribblers and passers.
Sure, he probably has 25% of the ability of Chris Paul but, unlike Chris Paul, he was the alpha dog of his era for a few years at least. One of the 20 most significant players in basketball history.

The lack of respect for the legends is bewildering. And you call yourself basketball fans?
"But... but... but... he doesn't crossover like Iverson or shoot like Curry, so he sucked!"
Pathetic :facepalm

TheMan, you called Bob Cousy a "scrub" and "garbage".
IncarceratedBob, you criticised Cousy's dribbling.
ArbitraryWater, you said you're not impressed by Cousy.
So let's get this straight. Before the Beatles, before rock and roll, before JFK was assassinated, before Martin Luther King had a dream, before colour TV took off, before they put a man on the moon.... a guy who grew up in the Great Depression was making fools of defenders, throwing no-look passes and winning multiple championships as the most creative and innovative basketball player the world had ever seen.
But no, you guys aren't impressed.
He lacked LeBron's athleticism. He didn't have Iverson's dribbling skills. He didn't dunk like Kobe.
What Cousy did, though, was completely change the game of basketball. Without him - and other innovators like Luisetti, Davies, Fulks, Baylor and Maravich - the game wouldn't be how it is today.
So, go ahead, shit all over the history of the game, post silly GIFs of Cousy dribbling one-handed and have a good laugh about the pioneers of the game. Go on, get it out of your system - impress your online buddies and make yourself look cool while you hide behind your computer pretending you're from the ghetto when you're actually at home in your bedroom while your Mom cooks you dinner.
Then grow up and realise that you are a fvcking imbecile with zero respect for history.
As Larry Bird once said: "All I know is that people tend to forget how great the older great players were. It'll happen that way with me, too."
And Kobe Bryant. And LeBron James. And Kevin Durant.
And then, maybe then, TheMan/IncarceratedBob/ArbitraryWater, you'll realise what a prick you once were.

You bet it will. Even undeservedly so, but it will. There ars already millions of youngsters who believe Kobe is better than Jordan. Maybe not the majority, but still a high number of fans. And they are going to pass this opinion to their own kids.
As for the future, suppose more teams start playing like the Spurs, team basketball, quick passing, great job with taking the maximum out of everyone instead of having "alpha dogs" jack 25 FG's per game, great job with resting the most valuable players, etc. So, suppose that the "new era" stat leaders only get like 23-25 ppg or 10-11 rpg, etc. Then, old timers will rant "Kobe or Durant would easily get 30 ppg in this era, just like they did in theirs", do you think the new generation fans will reply "oh, yes, you're right, we're so unlucky we're only stuck with 20 ppg scorers"? No, they'll probably rant back "GTFO with your nostalgia BS, Kobe and Durant wouldn't do crap today", and they'll probably cite "better defenses" as the reason behind this, even if this reason if false. Discrediting always seems to start from defense, even when it shouldn't.

As for Cousy, blaming him for things he didn't do because the way it was done hadn't been discovered yet is as nonsensical as it gets, as long as you can't provide solid evidence that he realistically didn't have the talent to perform what modern PG's do. In other words, you should critisize what he couldn't do, not what he could do or what he just didn't do.
Last time I checked, Einstein hadn't ever used a PC. Which, according to troll "logic" would result in Einstein today having problems getting hired even by some small-time business.

We have seen the "advancements" in the modern game.
How come today's players aren't shooting FTs any better than those of the "Cousy era?"
You would think that with 60 years of perfecting the foul shot, that they would all be shooting 99%.
BTW, the players of the mid-70's were even better FT shooters than those of this era.
Why?
Cell phones and their network were invented and being used within a couple of days.
The pc as we know it only took a few hours to design and implement.
The automobile and the highways that it uses today were the results of a few hours of work.
We went from cavemen one day, to landing on the moon the next.
Here is REALITY. The game of basketball was invented in the 1890's. Today's game uses courts that are the same dimensions, with baskets that are the same size and height, with the same number of players.
And in it's 120 years of existence, there have only been a couple of major rules changes, the 24 shot clock, and the 3pt shot. Yes, there have been many "minor" changes, but overall, the game is being played today the same way it was over 100 years ago.
What has changed? There are still only four objectives...shoot, pass, rebound, and defend. None of them require a PhD. And as we have seen in the history of the NBA...none of them requires height or superior athleticism.
Someone invented the dribble; someone else invented the jump shot; someone invented the dunk; someone invented the "cross-over"; and someone invented the hook shot. But all of them were being done in Cousy's era. There is virtually nothing being accomplished on a basketball court today, that wasn't being done 50+ years ago.
Cousy couldn't dribble? How about this video of some kids in 1962...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soLH6bau9uo

Shooting? How about this article...
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1083519/1/index.htm
Dunking? Bob Kurland was dunking in the 40's. Russell was routinely dunking in the 50's. Gus Johnson was shattering backboards in the 60's. Connie Hawkins was doing windmill dunks in the 60's. Dr. J was doing spectacular dunks in college in the 60's. Hell, the 5-9 Calvin Murphy was dunking back in the 60's, and the 6-4 David Thompson was soaring to near the top of the backboard in the early 70's.
How about these two articles...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alley-oop_(basketball)
In the 1950s, some players began utilizing jumping abilities by grabbing balls in mid-air and then dunking. Alexander Ha at the University of San Francisco, John Ricafrente at Kansas University and 'Jumping' Johnny Green at Michigan State University would frequently grab errant shots by teammates and dunk them (many teammates were not happy with this since they would lose credit for the basket). This resulted in a tightening in the enforcement of offensive goaltending rules in NCAA and NBA basketball in the late 1950s.
And how about this 6-4 white guy who was playing in the late 40's...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Pollard
In college, Pollard played for Stanford and was a key member of Stanford's 1942 national championship team (though due to illness, he did not play in the final game). During World War II, he starred in Coast Guard teams from Alameda to Honolulu. Following World War II, Pollard played for the San Diego Dons and the Oakland Bittners, making four trips to Denver for AAU playoffs. In the NBA, Pollard was considered one of the best forwards in the 1940s and 1950s, and was known for his leaping ability[1] (Pollard would occasionally dunk from the free throw line during warmups[2]) earning him the nickname "The Kangaroo Kid".

The best part is that even the Cousy clip that constantly gets ridiculed is actually the beginning of a great play, ending with a crossover into a Bird-esque touch pass. The definition of dishonesty.
The guy was repeatedly caught on tape doing behind-the-back dribbles, quick spin moves and changes of direction, Rubio's signature around-the-back pass, various behind-the-back, no look assists that look a lot like Jason Williams, Andre Miller style outlets, making fancy contorted layups in midair, Curry-style finger rolls and even a weird variation of the Rondo fake...
Basically all of the most modern, playground style moves you could think of except for the modern carry-crossover, which happened to be illegal in his time.
But apparently "he could only dribble with one hand"...
To be honest I don't think Cousy's game translates that much to today's NBA because he's got Rubio or young J-Kidd's shot with Kyrie Irving's defense. He'd get the assists and the highlight reels, but he'd need to either work on his jump shot or his defense in order not to be a liability. Rubio isn't a liability because he defends, Nash or Curry aren't liabilities because they can really shoot. Cousy seems like he had a Rubio's playmaking skills and shot, but without the defense. Maybe if he learned the game today he'd develop a great jumpshot, in which case he could be Nash, but it's not something we can just assume like that.
But one thing he would never ever ever get accused of is lacking offensive skills. That would be patently false and incredibly disrespectful. In any era, Cousy is going to be an awesome playmaker.

These idiotic posters who honestly believe basketball in the 50's and 60's was being played by nothing but short, white nerdy, goofballs who dribbled the ball with both hands at the same time, took standing set shots at peach baskets, and grabbed rebounds from the ground....just need to watch some actual footage.
Again, Cousy was Rubio 60 years before Ricky was. I don't see a shred of difference. And to be honest, the players receiving Cousy's passes didn't look much different than the ones that were receiving Rubio's either. If anything, the play in the 50's looked considerably quicker than that being played today. And I'm sorry, but watching Russell streak down the floor, and slamming home soaring dunks was MORE impressive than the dunks in the Rubio footage.
Of course, if you took black-and-white photos of Kevin Love, Steve Nash, Kyle Korver, and Andrew Bogut...and mixed them in with Cousy, Jerry Lucas, Mel Counts, and Clyde Lovellette, ...and then asked the casual ISH poster who was who, they would tell you that NONE of those eight guys could make today's NBA, much less lead in any statistical categories.
It has been said before, but just a couple of years ago, the 6-8 Love ran away with the rebounding title (well ahead of "Superman" Dwight Howard); a 37 year old Nash, playing 33 mpg, easily led the NBA in apg, and the 6-11 Bogut led the league in bpg.
If anything, transport those three back to the 60's, and none of them would sniff statistical titles.

Yet more proof of what Larry Bird said back at the peak of his playing career ("All I know is that people tend to forget how great the older great players were. It'll happen that way with me, too.")
It's only been a few years since Iverson and Garnett were dominating the league (or, in this case, high school), and already people are suggesting the level of talent is better these days.
Like I said before, it'll only be a matter of time before kids look back at highlights of Kevin Durant and LeBron James and say "the competition is a little more difficult 20 years later I would say".

The Man, I'm usually with you on your Jordan stuff but you're getting absolutely destroyed in this thread...
And how ironic of you to make a thread like this when young fans today do the EXACT same thing to MJ that you are doing to the history of the game in this thread. What do you think they'll be saying about MJ in 50 years? He'll be dead and people will act like he wasn't the GOAT, just like people are doing now. Some guy named Thadius McFurgalbuster will be getting praised as GOAT...

It really hurt his team.
He was a loser before Russell and a loser with Russell.
He did nothing for the game of basketball.
Let's talk about Russell Westbrook instead. Much more important player.

Anyone disagree?
You're just an amazing idiot.
Cousy was born in 1928. How many games of basketball did he get to watch on TV before he started his NBA career? How many great coaches did he get to work with in grade school? How many basketball camps existed?
He was doing stuff that was never done before and influenced the whole game. This is how things work. How progress happens. Kobe grew up watching Jordan who grew up watching Dr. J. and practicing his moves you think that didn't influence him? Who did Bob Cousy get to pattern his moves after when he 10 years old? His neighbors.
The game advances by pioneers like Cousy influencing the next generation of players and, importantly, coaches. Some of the stuff Cousy pioneered, became the everyday, building blocks of basketball, somethings my grade school coaches would teach me to practice.
Also, it shows your ignorance to say Cousy couldn't use his left hand. He known for being the pioneering ambidextrous player.

This thread should be stickied for anybody who disrespects the pioneers of the game....This is something you would need to explain to posters with no knowledge but I didn't expect the OP to fall into this category....Blatantly ignoring modern technology, basketball camps, tons of competition, different leagues to compete in, top notch college basketball programs, all advantages current players have...

How many times on ISH have I read that Larry Bird couldn't play today because he's too earthbound?
Somebody had a great quote on this the other day. I think it was KBlaze.
They were saying that Bird wouldn't be able to play today because the other players are more athletic and the quote was
The other players were more athletic back then too. What's your point.
In one of Bird's books he mentions that that didn't start in the NBA, lots of folks could jump better than he did in high school, it wasn't like the NBA was a big shock to him.

To me, he was sort of like Nash without the J.. Of course before Steve or anybody else for that matter, this dude was the 1st to really take use of the flashy passing and creativeness to produce great results.. there were few before him, others in his day, many after but I'd call him the 1st one in terms of all that, to high level.

Nah, I didn't get owned. Hoops fans not filled with nostalgia will agree with me. The 50s-60s were inferior. I have tangible proof. The league was mostly white back then when Cousy played. He only looks great because he's playing against garbage. Put me up against retards and I can look dominant. Tangible proof Cousy's era was crap? The league was almost all white, the league since racism stopped being a factor? Almost all black. What happened? Did whites just forget to play? Where blacks on white's level but after they were let in the league, suddenly made a jump and became better and thus the great majority of players in the league. Notice that Larry Bird is basically the only white guy in top ten GOAT lists? 9-1 is about the ratio of what the league is today.
So what happened in the pre late 60s? You know what, superior ballers were around but they weren't allowed to play because they were a certain color. Yeah, the pre late 60s was garbage. Spin it the way you want, you ain't fooling me into thinking scrub Cousy could hang with stronger, fadster and bigger athletes.

I know this thread rustled some of the older farts jimmies here. The silence is deafening once I spit the truth of why Cousy is crap.
A white league is way more inferior to a black league. There's the Euroleague for example and they have all the same advantages of modern technology.

I think he'd be a lot like Ricky Rubio in the sense he's a great playmaker, just a really inefficient scorer with less defensive ability. He'd have a role but would you want to play him over someone who may not be as good of a passer but pretty much better at every other aspect?....Depends on the team you want I guess. If he was given the same advantages as todays players or even the training guys were getting in the 50s and 60s, unlike when he was growing up a bit before he'd be a better player than he was....Just how much better who knows

Did MJ stans have a meeting in the basement of Nike's headquarters this spring to work in concert to diminish Russell/Wilt (especially Russell, who gets in the way of their "rings as the man"=GOAT talking point) and the 60's? :lol
Cousy was league MVP the season Russell won his first title.
Yep. Kareem was league MVP when Magic won his first title. Magic was the league MVP when Kareem won his 5th title. Cedric Maxwell was FMVP of Bird's first title. Shaq was the season MVP when Kobe won his first title. Anymore interesting facts?
