View Full Version : Why do people use the fact that WWE is fake to denigrate it?

I dont understand this. If you dont like WWE, fair enough. Everyone likes different things. But why do people use the fact that its fake to say it "sucks"? If someone comes to me and says Breaking Bad is awesome, and I say it sucks, and when I'm asked why I respond with "cause its fake", people would look at me like Im retarded. Yet its perfectly acceptable to say that when talking about WWE.
WWE is a show. It is entertainment. It is scripted, and that fact is well known. So what exactly is the problem with it being fake, when everything else on TV is?

It amazes me that people still use that argument.
The funny thing is if you told them everything else is fake, such as Breaking Bad, they would shut the F up because they have no rebuttal.
There is a better argument than "it is fake."
Yeah, even the news (CNN, Fox, etc.) is fake. Everything is fake in this f*cking world.

breaking bad is at least based on a possible reality, as are most other shows and movies. sure, they stretch things a bit here and there, but most of them are careful to never quite break the viewers' disbelief.
pro wrestling threw this idea out the window and went gonzo-town with the whole affair. everything is ludicrous, over the top, defiant of the laws of nature. i think that is why many have a hard time taking it seriously.
i'll give you this-- i hadn't realised until a few years back how hard the sport is on the wrestlers. it's almost as devastating as american football, which is really saying something.

Seriously. There are way more embarrassing qualities to use. The gayness aspect, the lowest common denominator form of entertainment, etc.
What's gay about it though? In MMA, sometimes they spend entire rounds on the ground on top of eachother rolling around. How is pro wrestling any gayer than that? Because it's scripted? So are movies but they are not gay, so what exactly is it that makes wrestling gay?

Ok, take action movies or a movie like Rocky. Its cool to say "Spiderman is awesome, he is so strong" and "Rocky is a f*ckin hero man!" but if you say "Man the Undertaker is a legend, 21 wins at Wrestlemania, thats amazing", then they respond with "You're stupid, dont you know its fake?".
Explain the difference to me because I dont get it. WWE is scripted but they actually take real damage on a nightly basis. The Undertaker had a severe concussion after his fight with Brock Lesnar. Did Sylvestor Stallone have a concussion after Rocky? I dont think so.

Wrestlers dont use make up like movie stars either. These guys literally slice their own faces during a match. They actually lose large amounts of blood.

Same here. I quit watching when John Cena started coming up. He is so shit.
I watched wrestlemania at a party. It was so sick. Daniel Bryan, Wyatt Family, Lesnar wailing on the boring ass undertaker F5ing him the whole time, the Shield, and the raw right after was really sick too.
Who gives a shit if it's fake. It's still really funny with all these ridiculous characters+badass cartoon looking fights performed live+hot chicks who fight too sometimes. At its best it's almost like live action Dragon Ball.
Also the crowd chants add to the comedy. Basically pure entertainment at its finest.

Anybody hating on it with its fake is either an ex fan who found out it was scripted so he has to scream its fake to everybody, thinks wrestling fans think its real so wants to "spoil" it by claiming its fake even though most fans know its a shiw,or bc it used to be popular hugely when he was a little kud and geew out of it and now hates anything new or it.
Oh theyre just rolling around---bruh thats UFC

i wasn't making a blanket statement about every possible movie, brokowski. obviously some TV shows and movies can be gonzo like pro wrestling... for better or worse.
at the same time, even in superhero movies, there's still a 'what if' chain of logic involved. if you can't see that for yourself, well...
sounds like you're unaware how many of these guys die young.
.
If I slit my throat, I'll die young, but that doesn't make throat slitting a sport. I wasn't putting the wrestlers down. I've always loved pro wrestling and I have great respect for the risks and pain/ injuries these guys endure (most of them die from being drug addicts though to be fair). Pro wrestling is simply not a sport though. It's theatre.
If there was an arm wrestling contest, and the result was determined beforehand, plus the people watching knew it was not a legit match, would we call that a sport?
If you go check out a forum dedicated to pro wrestling, you won't find any fans calling it a sport. Wrestling fans don't have a problem accepting it is a male soap opera.

Uhm bc its NOT FAAAAKE
Its Real you see.Movies and tv shows are more real than wrestling yep
Bc being scripted and fake like a movie is the same thing.
For ex--if you went to say a game of thrones, walking dead, breaking bad convo
and instead of discussing what happens in the show you go up to people and go
Walter Whites not real,Its FAAKE
Its all mostly a media created hate.
At one point the media believed wrestling was real and the promotions, wrestlers themselves put on the act of This is ALL REALLY Real and happening.
People kept their alignments and charcaters out in public until the WWe decided to tell the world we are a show and scripted and the media then turned its back on it and its been straight ridicule and insult and hate toward it ever since.
Professional Wrestling made tvs popular in the early days
you had star athletes in other professions ripping off peoples charcters and traits and using them like
Ali/Gorgeous George,You had Ali vs Inoki fill up a 100,000 seats
Pop Culture was all over WWE with Lauper,Trump,Mr T,Tyson,Ali,The freakin President Reagan.
It was covered in newspapers.
You had the WWEs techniques being used in Boxing,NFL,Media.
A lot of people became angry when they found out it was a show.A lot grew more resentment towards wrestling through that and media coverage nowadays.
A lot hate it bc its not an actual sport.A lot hate it bc it was a huge part of their childhood and changed or isnt the big thing in pop culture nowadays.
Oh I used to watch it when I was 12.I used to watch it until I found out it was FAKE.I used to watch it when Bruno,Backlund,Hogan,Andre were big.I loed Austin,Rock and on an on.

it's not exactly rocket science, is it?
kayfabe and predetermined results surely arose as a means to please crowds and make more revenue. then at a certain point, the industry must have realised that the public had an insatiable appetite for wrestling spectacle and farce.
that formula's been the same for, what... the 60's or something?

Well contrary to belief
Wrestling wasnt always scripted
It was legit before the 60s.
People like Gotche were revered athletes in the 20s to 40s
Only thing is in order to make it entertaining or please the crowd they started to change thing up,add characters, story
Contests used to last hours upon hours
Then they started to shorten it up move away from
olympic wrestling and be pro
They add characters and story to people
They imposed time limits
They had predetermined winners bc they found out what makes the most money
A legit contest where the winner is not who the people wanted and you may not get a good show filled with dull personalities or
a winner you like, with a good contest, and filled with people you either want to win, root for, support or people you despise, want to see beat, jeer
Ali took Gorgeous Georges traits and ised them in Boxing and a lot of people paid to see him lose.Floyd copied tht into a huge success nowadays.
People dont want to watch two dull competitors have a match thats boring anc either long or too short like UFC fights and Boxing dnd up at times
People love a STORY
People love a hero-villain matchup,Its worked for hundreds, thousands of years.
And with the advent of tv.Wrestling took a major plunge in characters and what they are now.
They found out what worked for tv and what drew people in.
style, substance, story, characters and ran with it and became the global sports entertainment empire they are today

yea, an article about the guy who just died mentioned some stuff i'd read before-- that the tour is a rough grind, and many get hooked on painkillers as a part of needing to perform when injured.
it said that a full third of the 30+ wrestlers from wrestlemania VI in 1990 (ultimate warrior vs hulk hogan) have now died young... most probably with very little to pass on, financially.

If viewers of Breaking Bad sat in front of their screens cheering on Walt and holding up signs they made and acting like what they're seeing is real and actually unfolding in front of them, I would laugh at them too. I can tolerate WWE in small doses. They have some talented/entertaining dudes.
I like the Triple H's and Brock Lesnars and not the CM Punks or Daniel Bryans....
Orton and Batista are nice, but I remember Orton being a lot more entertaining in his Legend Killer days.
Triple H and Bray Wyatt are the strong points right now for me. Too much John Cena or Daniel Bryan and I'm done for the night.
lol @ The Shield. That shit is lame.
I can understand why they still milk this John Cena thing though. There would be a huge drop off without him.

He said it's silly for people to be that engaged into scripted events.
Fans in basketball actually have potential to effect the outcome, WWE fans don't.
They're going crazy over something predetermined.
They're going crazy because they're entertained, and of course they are hoping for certain outcomes. They support certain characters more than others and want to see them do well, just like someone would support the character of Rocky from the movies. When watching Rocky, people don't go crazy because the guy isn't right there infront of them like in wrestling. They still root Rocky on, whether outloud or in their minds, knowing all the while that he is a fake fighter and the punches aren't even making contact. People get emotional when characters in movies die. So what if it's fake? Has Ramone never supported a character in a movie or on tv and wanted to see their character go in a certain direction? I think he probably has.
And WWE fans don't affect the results of matches that have already been booked, but if they're loud enough with their support for a certain character, that ups the chances that that character has a bigger role on the show in the future. So fans definitely do affect how the show plays out over the months. NBA fans cheering on the players has far less impact on how things play out.

Just when you think you have seen the best of the best retards that ISH has to offer, another one contender emerges. Nobody holds up signs when they are watching Breaking Bad at home, just as no one holds up signs when they are watching wrestling at home. When you go to a WWE event its part of the occasion to wear bring signs or WWE merchandise (shirts, hats, etc.). When a person goes to a Breaking Bad live event (interviews at conventions, etc.), guess what they bring? They bring signs and come decked out in their Breaking Bad cosplays. What is the difference?
In regards to acting like what you are seeing is real, thats what you do when you watch a movie, or go to the theatre. Why do people cry when they watch Romeo and Juliet in a theatre? The story isnt real, nobody is in love and nobody dies, so why do they feel emotion? Why do they get hyped up during the fights? Because visual displays like tv shows, movies and live events like WWE are made to elicit responses in the viewer, and representing something much larger then the act that you are watching in that moment.

Those that watch or have watched wrestling are much more intelligent and open minded than those who don't.
You have that guy at a party watching wrestling and loving the entertainment aspect of it, is a lot cooler than the guy sitting there telling everyone it is fake.
There really is a correlation between the two that goes beyond just wrestling. Naturally that guy that goes around saying it's fake, will be that guy that hates everything that people love. Kind of like that annoying hipster friend that tries to say everything you do sucks but the stuff he does is cool.
Granted, I don't watch wrestling on the regular like I did as a kid because I am older now and I don't have time to follow it, heck, I don't even watch much television but I can appreciate wrestling even though it's not as good as before. It is getting better and one has to appreciate the entertainment and the theatrics that come with a wrestling show.

Comparing wrestling to television shows. :oldlol:
If viewers of Breaking Bad sat in front of their screens cheering on Walt and holding up signs they made and acting like what they're seeing is real and actually unfolding in front of them, I would laugh at them too. Film and television is art. Wrestling isn't. Wrestling is stuck in limbo between sports and entertainment and ultimately fails to have the good qualities of either, except to the most mentally diminished and white trash.
millions of people who watch "realistic" shows like breaking bad do just that. they sit at home and follow the story as if it's real when we all know it isn't.

I don't think the fact it's fake is the issue. It's supposed to be "professional wrestling" but it's a soap opera. I don't understand what the actual point of it is. Only entertaining part of WWE is The Undertaker.
Comparing WWE to movies/tv shows is pretty retarded though. You need to compare it to other similar forms of entertainment that take place in an arena, like MMA/UFC/Boxing. And when you compare it to actual forms of sport you see why it's such a joke.
I have no problems with people who watch it, but when some WWE fanboy tries to argue who will beat who with me all I can do is laugh. These guys are not real fighters, they are actors executing their routine. But I still see some people comparing these fake fighters to people in UFC. :oldlol:

I have more respect for wrestling fans to cheer and make signs. They actually influence the characters personality in a way, whether a heel or a face turn.
Let me tell you how badass this is. Imagine going to a taped show and you can bring signs and cheer for certain television characters to die or get killed off. Like if we wanted Tony Soprano to go apeshit. Or Joey killing everybody on Friends.

I've never seen breaking bad, believe it or not, but are we comparing the acting/writing in a TV series to the acting in the WWE? lol
I think it's deeper than fake. It doesn't just mean "it isn't real." It means it's unwatchably bad script and acting.
But macho man lol I mean it's had some guys, but overall it's hard to imagine how you can enjoy it when it's so bad. It's so bad it can't even be funny for being bad.

Except wrestling isn't like a TV show/movie at all, it's a live event in a giant arena like UFC, Boxing or even an NBA playoff game. They don't accept the fact it's fake, they don't release the scripts of their events, they don't ACT LIKE TV SHOWS/MOVIES. They act like they are a sport, hence why you treat them like one.
Now if they were prerecorded episodes on TV, then maybe you could treat it like a show. But it's a sporting event so it has to be judged like one.
Only ones contradicting themselves are wrestling fans using the "so tv shows are fake" excuse when WWE is more like a spectator sport and has very little in common with movies/shows outside of being fake/soap opera.

What it comes down to most of the time is
"How dare you like what I don't like."
If you like pro wrestling, then you like it, what reason is there to defend what you are interested in. Ridiculous when you think about it.
"Its gay, stupid, for dumb people", well that's just the other person's perception of it.
All of a sudden you are a lesser person for having an interest...and you need to explain yourself...eh?
People have the right to say whatever they want.
Its up to the person to not take it to heart and see it for what it is, another person's judgement and that's all.

undertaker is the least entertaining part of pro wrestling. 7 minute entrances and boring fights. hope he retires after Lesnar murdered him.
The soap opera part gives the fights some context. at its best, there are cheesy promos and speeches on the same level as Anchorman in terms of ridiculousness and absurdity setting up these cartoon level live action ring battles, with fans shouting funny things, and the announcers also saying ridiculous commentary.
It is comedy mixed with the drama of sports. Even though you know who is going to win usually and how matches will end, at its best pro wrestling matches still can reproduce the feeling you get of seeing your favorite team pulling off an epic come from behind win.
The faux-sports mixed with the comedy and ridiculous characters is what is so great about pro wrestling. And also even though the matches are predetermined, doesn't mean they arent exciting to watch.
Can't lie, I used to watch UFC, and even though the fights are real, they are much more boring then pro wrestling matches. You can either watch guys roll around on top of eachother for 5 minutes in advanced ju jitsu holds, OR you can watch guys do back flips off the top ropes and spinning kicks. THE CHOICE IS EASY.

Thee soap opera part is great. It is ridiculous comedy in the same vein as anchorman. You do realize the stories ARE MEANT TO BE A JOKE dont you? It is all part of the show:hammerhead:

My point is nothing like that. Musical skill is subjective. It is all based on opinion. You can work all your life but if no one likes your style then someone who has starting singing two minutes ago can overtake you. MMA is different since it is judged purely on the skill between the two fighters. Brock Lesnar came in and destroyed the division on his way to a World Heavyweight Title. So acting like MMA guys are way more tough than "fake" wrestlers is not that easy anymore since it was disproven, but the butthurt of MMA fans only flared up and became more painful after that saga.
Also I have never seen UFC mentioned on a WWE forum, yet UFC forums mention wrestling on a daily basis. Why is that?

Brock Lesnar didn't really destroy anyone relevant, washed up Carwin/Mir and 50 year old Couture that was half his size. Beating that heavyweight division was same as Pacers getting 1st seed in the current East. Was a weak era, even before Brock people called UFC Heavyweight division absolute garbage for years. But when he faced real contenders in Overeem/Cain we saw what happened, he crawled up in a fetal position like a helpless baby against guys his size. Heavyweight division is the one place where you can get by with size over skill since the weight range is higher.
They mention WWE as a joke, same way we mention RealGM here as such. Usually the "rival" forum/event gets hated just because. Just the way things are.

Heavyweight division is the one place where you can get by with size over skill since the weight range is higher.
They mention WWE as a joke, same way we mention RealGM here as such. Usually the "rival" forum/event gets hated just because. Just the way things are.
:oldlol: Dude come on. If you have ever been to a UFC forum where they are discussing WWE, you would know they take it way deeper than a joke.

I only been on Sherdog and that place is like ISH of MMA, all trolling nonsense spam. They even have a dedicated WWE sub forum I think. I don't know of any other forums that even mention WWE though.
