But when one of those guys is nearing (at the time) 40 years old, one is constantly dealing with nagging injuries, one who wasn't that good to begin with but had knee problems (Metta), and one who was clearly a shell of himself from back surgery and had his heart set for other teams...it's a recipe for failure. And it's even worse when your beloved, legendary owner dies mid-season, your coach blatantly does not give a shit about defense, and basically the whole roster was set on not playing as hard as possible.

Howard gets a lot of unfounded "hate" for last year...he still played excellent defense and he battled through the year playing in 76 games.

The team around Howard literally gave no effort defensively at all...perhaps they took their cue from Kobe in that regard...who didn't even fake trying on defense last year.

No doubt Howard was not his normal self, but even not being his normal self he's still a top 10 or so player in the league.
