View Full Version : I still don't understand why people put Lebron clearly above Durant.

And I'm not talking legacies and the all-time list, because clearly Lebron has done more and had more years to do it. So I agree Lebron is obviously better all time.
But I'm talking about right now. I would say Durant had pretty clearly the better season, I imagine most would agree with that. He is well deserving of the MVP and all that.
And yet people seem to think Lebron is better, that Durant is still #2. Why? I would agree its 1a 1b or that its a total tie, or even Durant is better, but I'd say this "who is the best player currently" argument is a lot closer than people think. Obviously, the playoffs will tell us what we need to know, but how can we look back on that regular season and suggest that Durant ISN'T the current best?

Because you don't take the title of "Best player in the league" from someone like LeBron until the post season. Durant has a good enough team to win a chip. He has to outperform LeBron in the post season and win some series. It's only been 2 games and the Thunder haven't been able to secure their HCA even with the "best player on the planet"
That's why.

Kevin Durant very well could be the best player in the world, better than Lebron. Or maybe not. We can't definitively say if he is or isn't until we see how he plays in the postseason against tougher defenses, when the pressure's on, he's counted on at a substantially higher level, etc. We've seen him react to these situations in years past, which has led us to believe Lebron was better. But it's a new season, new playoffs. If he can do it better than Lebron this year, he deserves to be considered better. And unfortunately for Durant, I can't think of a scenario in which he clearly outplays Lebron and doesn't win it all. The expectations are high up there - that's what happens when you're in contention for the title of "best in the world".
Essentially, regular season basketball doesn't mean jack shit compared to playoff basketball.

durant winning the ship this year still wont make him better than lebron..lebron does EVERYTHING....SCORE,REBOUND,DEFEND,ASSIST...HE IS A COMPLETE BASKETBALL PLAYER.
right now durant is still too offensive minded...lebron can score 15 in a game and still dominate a game....if durant scores 15 in a game okc is losing that game. point blank period

Because they met in the finals and one player was clearly superior
Following year superior player won another ring which Durant had a dismall playoff showing
All this could/should change in one swift blow

KD just put up 36/11/4 with just 1 TO and is getting criticized for it.
Last year in his "choking" series he put up 29/10/7.
Best player in the world? No doubt. Anyone who says otherwise is a jackass.

Durant is not on Lebron's level, some people are just too blind to see it.
Only thing Durant is better at than Lebron is shooting, that's it. Lebron is the better scorer, playmaker, defender, rebounder, clutch performer, playoff performer, passer, leader and headband wearer.
When you watch their games objectively, what do you see? Because when I watch Durant I see him only being a factor when scoring, that's it. If his shot is not falling, he is useless. His weak skinnyass can't even get free to receive passes, Lebron wouldn't have that issue. James controls the flow and pace of the game, he dominate even without scoring. He is the best elimination game performer of ALL TIME, some of his games in 2012 and 2013 playoffs were legendary, he has that extra gear that Durant has never shown.
Lebron is the alpha among alphas, you saw what he did with the Olympic team. He is head and shoulders above his peers, he can sleepwalk through a game and still perform better than Durant at his best. But when Lebron gets serious nobody is on his level.

He's not a better scorer. I don't know if you just huffed a bunch of glue before that comment, but I'll leave it at that. Lebron is clearly the better passer, no doubt about that. But when Durant is getting you 32ppg (at 50%+ shooting, mind you) and nearly 6apg, what difference is there really in offensive production? I don't think you understand how big a difference 5 ppg is as opposed to 1 apg. Which are the advantages for Durant and Lebron, respectively.
Lebron has not been clearly a better defender than Durant this season. For a big chunk of the season, Durant was a visibly better defender. This isn't 2012. Whether he was coasting, lost a step, or whatever it is, Lebron isn't the DPOY candidate he might have been last season, and Durant has improved significantly. Neither have been Scottie Pippen this season, and neither have been James Harden either - using defense to put one ahead of them is an incongruous argument.
I am in no way definitively saying Durant is a better player than Lebron. I'm just saying, as of right now it's too close to call. These playoffs are where it's going to be decided. Either Durant has arrived as the world's best, or Lebron is still top dog. We don't know yet.
And as for the second point, OKC is 12-2 in the last 2 seasons when Durant scores less than 20 points, and has an average margin of victory of +19.3 in those games. I guess it's a good thing then that Durant has only scored 15 or less points twice in the last 175 games, right?

we talking about playoffs kid not regular season so your last point is null and void.
second just because durant scores more than lebron doesnt make him the better scorer...DUH..... i still think melo is the BEST scorer in the league...durant by far the best SHOOTER than anybody in the league...well its maybe a tie with curry. its debatable.
now back to the main argument which is these playoffs will determine who is better is complete and utter bs. what if the thunder make the wcf and lose...and the heat make it to the ecf and lose...who is better? what if the thunder make it to the finals but the heat dont but the thunder still lose in the finals then what?
oh durant made it farther so he is clearly better! hell outta here with these kiddie games. next u gonna tell me if russell westbrook faces cp3 in the playoffs and averages more points and assists and wins the series he is the better pg? smh...KIDS.

The difference is pretty clear to me. Lebron has always been better. To start, Durant plays the same regardless of the circumstance. He doesn't have an extra gear to get to. Lebron is the opposite. You can clearly see him elevate his game and effort in the postseason. The dude covers so much ground on both ends of the floor its absurd.
Durant also only impacts the game by scoring. When his shot isn't falling, he is practically a ghost out there. Lebron on the other hand, is constantly controling the offense like a quarterback. You have no idea whether he is going to look to pass or shoot when he catches it. Combine this with his crazy athleticism advantage over Durant and you have no contest.
Also, let's put to rest this "he's only 25" shit. He is a great, great player at 25, but the truth is, Lebron was head and shoulders better at the same age. In 2009, when Lebron was 25, he was at his athletic peak and practically toying with the league. He would do stuff athletically that was mind boggling. Everynight there was a chasedown block or dunk that I couldn't even fathom. The guy would go 1 on 4 against 4 HOF'ers every year in the playoffs and hold his own. Durant gets blast by a Memphis squad with no HOF players on it. So yes, Durant is great at 25, but Lebron was a different animal entirely.

Lebron wouldn't keep jacking shots, he'd look inside more, pass more, and he plays better off ball (see his catch and shoot shots, easy post scores on smaller players). Versatility is Lebron's thing and he could adjust to the grizzlies and change his play style
