The Philippines is named after Prince Philip of Spain and the Spanish word for Philip is Felipe. The Philippines is named after Prince Philip of Spain and the Spanish word for Philip is Felipe.

I'm pretty sure "Filipinas" is the first name that was given to the country, correct me if I'm wrong though.
Don't know if that's the reason or not.

Ever since they came to america they were good at flipping burgers, so people refer to them as "Flips" and the Philipino got change to Filipino.
