Can't believe idiots are now trying to make a case that looking at a stat sheet is more important than watching games. These people are doing more damage to real basketball discussion than anyone else on this forum.

Eye test fanatic's typical argument:

"Marc Gasol is better than Dwight Howard, watch the game"

Real compelling, convincing stuff. Much info. to back their claim.

knowing stats are a must for hard core fans unless you actually have the time to watch every single game from every team...and even if you watch all the games it is must, scouts make use of stats all the time

stats vary in importance from sport to sport though...in baseball stats are extremely useful, in the NFL they are much more subjective...NBA is probably somewhere in the middle of those 2

I can't say I disagree with your point, when somebody only looks at the box-score and then discusses the game with people who actually watched it, the quality of the discussion is certainly damaged, especially when the stat guy has an agenda.
On a related note, how do you view the analytics 'movement' in the NBA, do you consider it as much of a problem to the NBA as a whole, as the guys above are to ISH?

Nope still here. Since I'm not a religious man, I won't bother starting a war, over stats, or anything else. Best to leave that to the Christians.

Agreed. Manly with defense
I don't think you can measure defense through stats but some people try hard to do it.

But then you get players like Bruce Bowen and to a certain extent, Dennis Rodman, who both give you so much more than what their stat sheet tells you.

I don't even think advanced defensive stats give proper value to what players like these two did.

Yea i understand but Gasol shot 44% from within the arc which totaling to his season total equaled to less than 34% from within that range. You tell me how Marc can shoot from within that range when he averaged 51% from that same range against teams in the atlantic division in the month of march (06-12) which after that time his percentage fell of t0 44%. So im thinking withing that timeframe his average couldnt have been more than a total of 33%. Even with those numbers he couldnt have shot that good from 16 feet which he averaged 56% from nov 07-march 13. Now i dont expect him to get those numbers back but i expect him to at least get them up as it was from 08 , thats when he made 88% of his shots from within the paint . Hoping the Grizz take this series because i can go on and on with Zebo and his numbers too which isnt looking too good

At least we don't try to change laws to force our religious views on other people, or tell people that they're going to suffer eternal torment because they don't believe a certain way, or claim that stuff written down by folks living thousands of years ago trumps the discoveries of modern science. :facepalm

Why work yourself into a (half) tizzy over the opinions of a couple of retards with extra chromosomes? Be happy that those imbeciles have religion. The true human scum are those that require the threat of an all powerful being watching their actions in order not to be douchebags to their fellow humans.

Which is hilarious when people say shit like boxscore watchers. I mean, do people really think anyone is out there just checking stats and never watch any games? Who are these people? :oldlol:

Literally every single time I bring up stats people always tell that I need to watch them game and stop taking so much stock in them :oldlol:. Am I not suppose to use them ever? Because it's impossible without some "expert" eye test fanatic to tell me how little stats matter and I should just watch the game like I don't watch. I'm just not stupid enough to disregard stats. They rarely ever make valid points to even add to the debate either.

I think the agenda is the bad part. Also, trolls... dudes who say LOL 15 FTS.

How much discussion is really going on here and who is trying to jump into real basketball discussion with a box score? How is that even possible?

as I've said before, it seems like the only time stat people are annoying is when they are arguing about who or which team is better... trying to prove a point that someone can do this or do that (generally in regards to why they are better or worse than someone else)... and use stats to back it up. They think because a stat is "true" that it means their argument is "true."

That's why 5 rangz is a great example. That's not a bball stat, but it embodies exactly what happens when people use stats to support their argument.

And no way... the trolls are the ones ****ing up this site. It's everyone's fault, too, for taking the stats they dig up seriously.

You might think dudes who are 'serious fans' or' serious supporters of a player' aren't trolls, but really they are. In fact, I'd argue once you go past a certain point... where you have to compare your favorite player to everything in every thread, using stats or not, u trollan.

bashing people for their opinions is just as bad as bashing people for worshiping stats without context.

I can see how factual arguments could get in the way of some of the player worship I see on this site. Scouts in general use stats to not to gauge a player but to get an idea of how much of what he see's happens per game, per season.

I watched peak Kobe, he may not be better than Lebron, but I enjoyed his prime and post prime play style better. Those 2000 Kobe-Shaq Lakers teams were some of the most entertaining basketball.

Yeah, they underrate lebron's impact. How he plays team basketball and gets everyone involved. How he's involved in lots of scoring plays even if he doesn't get an assist. Much easier for people to make shots when they're involved in the game. They overrate Kobe's impact. His hero ball disrupts the team's offense. Hard for his teammates to make plays when they're not involved in games.

Lmao, most stats actually discriminate against volume scorers such as Kobe. If anything, they make LeBron look better ie. PER, TS%, WS etc.

Not all volume scorers, but most. Durant's amazing, man. Volume and efficiency usually don't go hand-in-hand, but he's redefining it as we speak. Anyways, from my experience advanced stats don't really look favorably upon chuckers is all I'm saying.
