They don't. Media looks like fools now because they didn't do due diligence and find out that his wife owned half the team. Now the NBA can't do shit, because his wife isn't going to sell which means Sterling isn't out.

Sterling's wife was implicated in that lawsuit for discriminatory housing practices, and there is testimony of her going as far as posing as a maintenance person in order to remove a minority tenant.

There is also record of her making similar statements as her husband, the language in the NBA constitution that Silver is applying to Sterling's recorded convos is nebulous and broad enough to where they can and will apply it to his wife too.

It's a particular bylaw that says it can be brought to referendum to terminate an owner/s if said owner is adjudged to have "failed to meet a contractual obligation that resulted in the league being adversely affected".

That is so all-encompassing, all they have to do is cite some random thing she said or did.

What you don't understand is that what the NBA did was more of a PR move than actually caring whether it works or not. Their main goal was telling the fans that they don't support Sterling.

Where did you read that? From what I understand she does NOT own part of the team, but they are trying to transfer ownership to her so that they do not have the pay the capital gains tax on the team when he sells.


He bought the team for 12 million. If he sells for 1 billion or whatever they get for it, he would pay capital gains tax on the difference, which is 33% of the difference. We're talking $300+ million dollars here. If they transfer ownership to her, she would get it at the current value of $600 million. If they sell for $1 billion, they difference is $400 million and they pay the capital gains tax of that, which is far less. It's a little over $100 million in taxes.

From what I understood, they are trying to save over $200 million in taxes.
