The owner hates him, their (lack of a) relationship is what stirred up all this drama in the first place, and will probably end up in Jackson being fired.

He did well though, definitely doesn't deserve to be let go.

The problem is that franchises want instant results. It really affects coaching.

For example, refer to waht Steve Kerr said. Loved the triangle but would not implement it in an offense. It takes a while to learn and coaches don't have the luxury of time.

Maybe he'll do it now if he's hired as head coach under Phil.

In fairness, Jackson had no coaching experience either. Still, that team really took on his personality and made some noise. Maybe that's the problem. Sounds like impatient ownership meddling, but that's life in the NBA.

They had some injuries for sure but I think they've underachieved. Their half court offense is not good and just ends up being a bunch of ISOball bs. Harrison Barnes has gone backwards and I just don't see how people think he's done a great job. He hasn't been awful by any stretch but their team is really good on paper but they had some rough stretches this year for sure. He's also had locker room problems with two assistant coaches and clashes with the FO. I'm not saying they should let him go but I don't think that it's out of the question to let him go. If they do decide to go that route they had better have someone good in mind.

You can actually tell by listening to their broadcasting that Kerr is intelligent with regards to basketball analysis, and Jackson is not.

Just because Jackson had good instincts as a player on the court, does not mean he automatically has a high coaching/analytical IQ, because he clearly doesn't.

I feel your pain man, and dread the same thing myself. But Im not too worried. Even tho Lacob is obviously pretty smart, there are plenty of idiot teams out there who will try to snap this guy up because he won 51 games with a talented team, and not actually examine what he DOES as a coach. While it's nice for a coach to have a good relationship with his players, the coach didn't think that it was important to have a good relationship with the FO. This team underachieved this year and their halfcourt offense was poor and that is important in the playoffs. Their offense was inconsistent and losing Mile Malone didn't help them. The players don't run the team the FO does and now it's on the FO to smooth this over with the players and find a worthy replacement. Am I the only one here who's read how the team was in disarray this year?

You think making the playoffs with that much talent is a huge accomplishment? How many coaches in this league miss the playoffs with this roster? Bogut played 67 games this year BTW.

Also, who said his religious beliefs aren't relevant? I just posted a link, he did not prepare his team for G2, and instead worked on his Easter Sermon. In what universe is that acceptable? Also, I don't have any quotes handy, but from what people have said, Bogut (an atheist) was put in an awkward position in the locker room with the praying and whatnot. Religious can be a uniting force, but can just as easily be a divisive one.

That's all I'm saying. I'm not saying this is the right or wrong move, just that I can understand it. With or without Bogut, the team could be better. Is it Jackson's fault? I dunno, but their half court sets were weak.

Edit
Also, his problems with his coaching staff probably didn't do a lot to endear him to the FO. He didn't seem to do much to endear himself to them and unfortunately, he works for them. You have to budge a little sometimes and two assistant coach fiascos don't reflect well on a coach certainly not in the same season.

Right, you can be religious, don't let it interfere with your occupation, though. Why hold a prayer before games if one of your players is religious? Doc Rivers handled it the right way:

Rivers calls himself a "very religious" man, having grown up in the Second Baptist Church in Maywood, Ill., and praying on his knees every night in his home to this day. But he prefers to practice privately and is quick to note that he has attended church only for funerals the past 15 years.

So, that day, he decided his teams would keep their religious practices private as well.

"We're no longer praying," Rivers recalled saying to his team. "I want to take a minute. Everybody close their eyes. We all can have different religions, we have different Gods, we can just take a minute to compose. If you guys want to pray individually, you can do it. If you want to meditate, do whatever you want.

"Then after that game,Tariq Abdul-Wahad walks in to me, gives me a hug with his eyes tearing, and said, 'Thank you. That is so important to me. No one has ever respected my (Muslim) religion.' He said, 'I'm going to give you everything I've got.' "

Eh, I respectfully disagree. Bogut played 67 games, and is a tremendous defensive anchor. Curry finished 6th in the MVP voting, and Iguodala played incredibly in his role this year, and was arguably the best perimeter defender in the league.

5th in the West, but only 19-25 against teams with a record of .500 or above. That's 8th in the West, and IND, MIA, BKN, CHI were better in the East.

I think they should've finished ahead of the Blazers, and possibly the Rockets in their first year with Dwight.

"The Warriors had only won more than 42 games once since 1994, but won 47 in 2012-13 and 51 this season. With Iguodala and Bogut in tow, Jackson molded the league's third-best defense this season. He outcoached George Karl in 2013 and fared admirably with a shorthanded roster against Doc Rivers this season."

but i did. iggy and lee also missed a significant amount of games.

all things considered, they achieved just fine.

where in that article did it say he didn't prepare his team?

why not? if he is religious, and some of his players are too, why does it matter? the non-religious fanatics dont have to listen to his serman or whatever. andrew bogut has free will, quit acting like he doesnt.
I posted it earlier in this thread:

The Golden State Warriors coach wasn’t talking to his players about preparing for Monday’s Game 2 of his team’s first-round series against the Clippers at Staples Center in which Golden State leads, 1-0. Instead, Jackson was speaking on an elevated platform at True Love Worship Center International. At this multi-cultural, non-denominational church he and his wife, former R&B singer Desiree Jackson, were delivering respective emotional songs and sermons through two hours, an experience Warriors guard Stephen Curry described as “not your typical Easter service.”

Bogut is overrated. Good big, but not reliable at all. Durant, Blake, and Harden finished above Curry. That is three West spots right there. Then there is LMA and Lillard, and San Antonio. You can make the case they should have been better than Portland perhaps. But it would be a hard sell if you ask me. Iggy wasnt available for about 12 games and they went 5-7 in that stretch. Think about it it, 51 win team and lets say that they won 2-4 more games in that stretch, that is about 53-55 wins. Excellent.

6th in the West is great. I think people just see a bunch of good not great players on the Warriors and overrate them. This team took the Clippers to a close game 7 and almost won. The Clippers are a great team.

We shall see. There is no reason to think this team will get any better with the current roster. I'd put money on them being sixth or fifth max in the west again next year.

I said this in another thread but I'll say it here...

Jackson turned that franchise around and made them a defense first team that had lights out shooters. It was the "Spurs recipe" for success and the only piece of the puzzle they were missing was better interior defense.

Anyway .. bad move by GS.

I thought Jackson did an admirable job during his tenure. If team performance was the sole criterion, then no, he didn't deserve to get fired. I also felt he was growing as a coach and could have built something with this team.

He bled in and gave young players a chance and helped cultivate the young core of the team. His willingness to exploit mismatches and force the opposing coach to match up with his lineups is something most of the other younger coaches in this league don't really do.

That being said, every single time he was mic'd up, it seemed like all he did was shout motivational platitudes. I can't remember a single tactical thing he'd say in a huddle.

If I'm the Warriors I'm going after Kerr. I know he's in talks with the Knicks, but the dubs have 10x the roster of NYC or LA. In Golden State he doesn't have to sit on his hands and 'rebuild' for 3 years before he actually has an opportunity to make some noise in the playoffs.

Well the core responsiblity of a coach is to get them to play hard. By all accounts, players would run through a wall for Mark Jackson. X's and O's are important but if given a choice, you want a coach that connects with the players, because that'll carry them farther than anything else.

And they just dumped a master motivator. The NBA doesn't have so many that a team can afford to fire one that's successful. Bad move.

Maybe MJ would work better as a college coach.

Kerr's perfect for NY because you have PJax as a mentor and the team is rebuilding, there's a certain margin for error but there's no great basketball minds that can walk him through his first year as a head coach in Golden State and as we've just seen with Mark Jackson's firing obviously just making the playoffs isn't good enough for the Warriors front office

I've tried to look at this multiple ways and I just do not understand what more they wanted him to do. People point to all the supposed talent that they have, and how he should have gotten more out of them but what more do you want? They went seven against the Clippers without Bogut.

What adjustment was he supposed to do? He did the impossible by getting them to buy in defensively and hold each other accountable. When was the last time you saw GSW play some serious defense? Seriously.... hiring an unproven commodity like Kerr is just the most disrespectful thing an organization could do.

Unless a proven HOF worthy coach was waiting to take over, I don't understand what in the hell the owner was thinking because firing Jackson to hire Kerr is just unfathomable.

Sorry, but David Lee and Methuselah O'Neil isn't going to cut it on defense.

Warriors were one key piece away from breaking this wide open and they f'd it up.

1) They bring in a coach and a better interior presence and the new coach looks like the second coming of Popovich

or

2) Team implodes, people start leaving, and it's back to being in the competition for last place in the west.

or

3) They bring in a new coach, keep the same players, and still get beat in the first round.

I'm glad the head honchos over there are very involved and hands on more than ever but what is really out there for them without reverting back? Mark was tailor made for those young guys. Half Riley / Half Martin Luther. To those who say they need real coaching, what do you think every coach do? Do they sit and freestyle games? All coaches practice at home and on the road. The X's and O's are there. They coach. Mark Jackson never sat down. They lost one.

Ballin095
05-07-2014, 12:44 AM
He was most likely fired due to egos on the management side. Mark Jackson probably got into arguments with the owner/management and management had enough of it and decided to fire him. Only explanation that really makes sense at this point.

bdreason
05-07-2014, 03:20 AM
Rumor is there was already a divide between Mark and the front office, then Jackson found out two of his assistant coaches were reporting to the owner behind his back. Jackson then fired the assistants and battle lines were drawn... Problem is it was a no-win battle for Mark.

I agree Mark isn't a great X and O's coach, but he's a tremendous motivator. If we needed a guy to draw up plays, we could have hired an assistant (offensive coordinator). That's essentially what Malone did last season for the team. Anyways, as someone who coaches HS Basketball myself, I think getting your players to play for you is 75% of the battle. We pretty much cover everything during practice, and only slight adjustments are made during actual games. I'm not saying it isn't important to be able to make clutch play calls... but at the end of the day, it's the players who produce on the court, and they won't produce unless they believe in themselves, in their teammates, and in their coach.

We better bring in a legitimate playoff caliber coach if we're going to fire a fantastic motivator like Mark Jackson. Hiring a guy like Steve Kerr would be a joke, and would set the franchise back 2-3 years.

Who the **** are we gonna bring in, man I don't like this move. The thing is, if you asked me at the end of the regular season... I'd have said meh, fire his ass. He "drew up" some dumb ass plays during close games all throughout the regular season.

But he did nothing wrong in the playoffs, hell I thought he did a good job actually. Real good job in game 7 IMO. If the Clips end up making the finals... this move is gonna look horrible. And they aren't even considering Karl, the one "FA" coach who actually has a proven track record (sorta)

GSW were 12th in points/possession. With all that offensive talent. Sorry but Jackson was at best a mediocre coach. The defensive improvements were almost all Malone's successes and I would even argue Bogut had more input on defensive adjustments that Jackson did.

The team ran pretty poor offensive sets that relied more on Curry shooting 25 footers off the dribble than any team in the history of the game. They have elite offensive talent and he got little out of them. He spoke in platitudes and was lost in Xs and Os.

He fired the ever popular White Mamba in a fit of rage in front of the team, flew back to LA to preach during the season, and said he was praying for the family of the newly out of the closet Collins. All this while he had a gay boss trying to move the team to San Francisco. Another assistant coach was fired because he had such a mistrust of Jackson he was recording all their conversations. And the stripper/embezzlement issues weren't exactly points of pride either.

I have no comprehension why people have defended him so much. Because before the team was under old management they weren't very successful? So the **** what? This team has an insane amount of talent on it and given proper offensive sets could absolutely contend.

Quick, think of the boss you liked the most. Are you going to tell me he/she was the best manager you have ever had? Players liking a guy hardly means he is getting the best out of them.
This sums it all up. Well done. Everyone should just read this and shut up.
