“I hope that (Kobe) is healthy so he can lead out Lakers back,” said Johnson. “He’s on my Mount Rushmore. He is unreal. Think about his mindset and attitude and how he can just do it night in and night out, that’s one thing great about Kobe. I love him.”

Kobe named the four players he’d put on his Mount Rushmore back in February. Magic was on the list along with Magic’s former rival Larry Bird, six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan and Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell.

A slight to his teammate Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

How is Russell better then Kareem? Honestly.

Tougher era than the 60's.

Russell is GOAT.
One of the best mindsets, greatest defender and greatest winner ever. In the latter nobody is close

In no universe is Kobe ahead of Kareem.

Neither is Magic, but at least a discussion can be had there.

Yeah, because Magic and Kareem won 5 titles in the 60s. :biggums:

Not really. A 38-year-old Kareem won a Finals MVP over PRIME Magic Johnson, Kareem also got robbed in the 1980 Finals for the MVP...Magic had probably the most help out of any all-time great when you look at some of those Showtime rosters...two different guys won a Finals MVP over Magic.

Kobe is the most tenured Laker and led the team to 3 straight Finals and 2 rings with only one other all-star on the roster...He had many great MJ-like performances in different Playoff series, mostly in the Conference Finals, where he played out of his mind for 3 straight years

Kobe put up 30/6/6/2/1 on average in his 3 straight Finals runs...he's top 5.

Kobe does not belong on any Mt. Rushmore except the Lakers-only Mt. Rushmore

And who would the four Laker individuals be? I'm assuming we're only taking into account their play as a Laker and not their entire career. That would leave Wilt, Kareem and Shaq off?

Mikan, West, Magic, Kobe?

Hmm... I didn't really think that through to be honest. I'm not sure putting Kobe on that Mr. Rushmore at the expense of Kareem or Shaq is fair. Maybe Kobe doesn't belong. Surely you'll have people on here who want Mikan out, but on my very limited knowledge of him, he deserves to be on it.

Kobe had much greater Laker career for sure over Shaq and Kareem. The top two Lakers of all-time are Magic/Kobe you can make great case for either honestly. There's no wrong answer here.

Fair enough then - he belongs when considering career as a Laker, but not when counting the greatest players ever who were at one time a Laker.

Okay. I don't think Kobe belongs on Mount Rushmore anyway. I have him ranked #6 all-time personally.

So who do you have at 5 besides Jordan, Bird, Kareem, and Magic? (presumably)

Only as a Laker.
Although I had admired Magic as a player - I rated him above Kobe and on the same level as Bird (maybe even a little bit higher), for me he was the NBA best player in the late 80s - he is like most players, got an enourmous ego seeks popularity, attention and like to be under the lights. That's why we shouldn't levy solely on what players said.
