KD had more than enough room to change direction to the side, as evidenced by him swinging his arms out in front of DJ to embellish the contact when all he had to do was take a small step to his right to completely avoid the screen. He didn't do that though because as always, instead of trying to play the game, he tried to make a play for the foul call.

KD had more than enough room to change direction to the side, as evidenced by him swinging his arms out in front of DJ to embellish the contact when all he had to do was take a small step to his right to completely avoid the screen. He didn't do that though because as always, instead of trying to play the game, he tried to make a play for the foul call.

That is not what the rule says. If that was the case then illegal screens would be called every time the defender doesn't see the screen. They cant avoid a screen that they don't see.

What it actually says:


he needs to set himself in a legal guarding position providing the defender with enough space to stop and/or change direction. The speed of the player determines the distance needed. The offensive player cannot just jump in front of a moving opponent at the last second.


"Set himself" has a clear meaning. It is just another way to say stationary. You aren't set if you are moving which is why the foul is called a moving screen. And it also says the speed of the player determines the distance needed before DJ sets himself.

DJ literally did jump in front of Durant at the last second since it wasn't more than a second between the start of the clip and the time he hit Durant.

man i've watched this like 20 times and I still ain't certain. In that first gif there's no push off with Urant's arm, no bending knee to spring off with.... it just looks like he hit a stone wall.
