The Detroit Pistons have reached an agreement in principle with Stan Van Gundy to make him their new coach and president of basketball operations, according to sources with knowledge of the talks.

Sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday night that Van Gundy and the Pistons have verbally agreed to a five-year pact worth an estimated $35 million, with an official announcement on course for this week.

Maybe they are hoping SVG can do for Drummond what he did for Dwight which is kind of a smart move, although Drummond obviously has a long way to go to be on Dwights level.

Oo, stole him right under the Warriors. Who the Warriors getting now?

Good hire for the Pistons.

Good move.

Go Pistons.

Glad we didn't go with a former franchise star just to make the fanbase happy.

Stan Van Gundy has a .641 career win pct, 6th highest in NBA history (min. 500 games).

Great coach. They finally hired someone right.

Now all they need to do is trade Josh Smith (if they can) and rebuild their roster around Drummond and/or Monroe.

Won't be possible. No one wants him for 3 yrs with the contract he has. :lol

The Pistons would be in (relatively) good shape if not for that Josh Smith contract. And maybe Brandon Jennings as well.

Pistons have no shooters. They're nothing like that Magic team.

Seems to me like SVG didn't want the pressure associated with the Warriors job.

Great coach.

Will get the most out the talent if they don't quit like Dwight.

Seems to me like he wanted control of his roster. Every job is high pressure. He wanted a Doc Rivers type job and wanted final say on players and Golden State wouldn't give him that. Sucks for the warriors but I don't blame them. Just because he's a good coach doesn't mean he'd be good at evaluating talent. I mean Larry Brown is one of the best coaches ever and he can't draft to save his life.

I think it's more that most of the coaching community are upset with how Mark Jackson got fired the way he did, and are reluctant to take up a job with the Warriors FO after seeing one of their colleagues ousted like that.

If this is true, it's a real gut punch for the Warriors, their "high-profile" coaches are dwindling. Who's left? Lionell Hollins, who publically feuded with Grizzlies management? Jeff Van Gundy, who took a sh*t on the Warriors management for this whole situation?

Still can't believe they did that to Jackson. Is he the perfect coach? No. But everyone can't ignore the fact that they won 51 games IN THE WEST. The Warriors FO is delusional if they think they won that on talent alone, and can just stick any high-profile coach in for Jackson and expect to win more games/go farther than they did this season. Jackson got his players to believe and buy into his system, do you really think Curry (who continually stated he didn't want Jackson fired) and the others who have had a tight-knit relationship with him are just going to go along their merry way with SVG if he signed on?

I went off on a tangent here; but good on SVG for taking the Pistons job, hopefully he can revitalize the team :applause: .

Jackson couldn't get along with the owner or his own assistant coaches. I don't know the whole story but if your owner doesn't like you why the hell would he keep you around? The team lost in the first round it's not like he was winning championships.

There's a lot more to the whole story than has been revealed to this point but in any job if you're constantly butting heads with your boss it's not going to end well for you.

I agree that Jackson did a pretty good job and is a decent coach though, I'm sure he'll get another shot should he want it, and if not he can always go back into the booth for a while.

If the Pistons cannot move Smith because of his contract, how about moving Monroe and move Smith to PF? Drummond, Monroe and Smith cannot play on the floor together. And while I like Monroe, he might be bigger commodity to trade versus Smith's contract. I just don't think anyone's going to trade for 3 years $14 million per year.

They're not really planning on moving Smith; in part because they can't at this point. It's about getting rid of Monroe who can't play defense and then putting Smith back to the 4 and getting his value back up.

I thnin you need to open your eyes and ears as to why Jackson was fired and stop buying into the hype machine. I dunno, did you watch any Warriors games. Like what kind of coach would say that Bogut hurt his shoulder "sleeping"? Really, just open your mind a little bit. Ran off Mike Malone (who was the architect of his defense) Scal and had another so scared for his job he was taping convos, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Banned Jerry West from praftice, clashed w Lacob's son and is totally paranoid. The guy is delusional. That's not all that happened either but if you can't see a pattern of behavior then I don't know what to tell you.

I think he's a great coach for Drummond, as others mentioned. He crafts an offensive system based on his roster. My main question is how good of a GM will he be in regards to drafting, trades, and FA. I'm a little surprised he got Doc-type money, but Detroit's desperate.

He needs to move Smith since that deal is atrocious and I feel they can be better without him. I wonder if he can trade Smith to Brooklyn for KG's expiring + filler + a 2nd round pick. My understanding is that Brooklyn's basically capped-out and has very little way to improve until the Joe Johnson & Lopez contracts expire. KG looks about done and I can see SVG just offering to buy KG out of his deal. Ridding Smith for an expiring can be a good thing though, imo.

I like Monroe, but he's more of an Al Jerfferson type (must play C due to slow feet) than a PF. I'd do a S&T for Chandler + Arthur from Nuggets. If they keep their pick, they should draft A. Gordon in my opinion. Flip an expiring + 2nd rounder + KCP for Affalo. Sign G. Vazquez to be starting PG.

Vazquez/Jennings
Affalo/Bynum
Chandler/Singler
Gordon/Arthur
Drummond/Harrellson

This is awesome news. I was hoping for Him or Lionel Hollins. I would still rather them get rid of smith rather than monroe. If not smith get rid of jennings.

How about Josh smith for Luke zeller and Gerald Henderson and a 2015 protected 1 Top 14 protected.

Josh smith and peyton siva for Gallinari and Evan fournier
