View Full Version : Marv Albert told Steve Kerr not to take NYK job.

"Well, I told him it never ends well there. Just look at recent history. It's because of one man (Dolan)," Albert told me Thursday over the telephone. "There is no happiness there. I say this with all kinds of friends I have there and (the ones) at the MSG Network. Everybody hates being there. For coaches it's very difficult. Steve couldn't accept anyone (from MSG's PR staff) following him around with a tape recorder. Like Phil [Jackson], Steve is a guy who wants to say what he wants to say," Albert continued. "He's very opinionated, which doesn't always work when you are at the Garden."

This is pretty depressing, both for Knicks fans; and the organization in general, but just :lol either way.

Never happening, he inherited the team from his rich daddy and I'm sure he'll pass it on to his even more retarded children.

too bad he isn't racist
He suggested facts though. Nothing good comes from this city. It's just a shit hole and I'll bet the first die hard fan to say such things about my franchise. The organization has gone to hell and will rot until we can finally start fresh. We didn't need Kerr, and won't need a rookie coach. We need someone of the likes of Mark Jackson. I'm a fan of him and he seems to rub off of on his players.

I mean we're not going to even give Phil Jackson one season to get the team turned around? They did win 54 games the season before, no? They did get Amar'e, Tyson, and Carmelo to go there, didn't they? Do you guys really think no one will go there with PJax running the team?

You're wrong. Every decision since he's been here was made by Jackson.

Not sure, but the entire coaching staff was fired, the medical staff was fired. Even Herb Williams was fired. Every name you've heard about coming to the Knicks is a Phil guy. I mean do you really think Dolan would've even thought of hiring Kerr at all?
Phil is running basketball operations. As shocking as it may appear to you, it's the truth. Stop letting your prejudice get in the way.

His private life has nothing to do with his performance at his work. This is 2014. I thought we were living in progressive times but evidently I was wrong about this.
For example, Michael Jordan, a known gambling sociopath, is the greatest basketball player of all time. Kobe Bryant, a known homosexual rapist, is idolized by thousands of mentally disabled people around the world and on Insidehoops. Wilt Chamberlain committed acts of animal cruelty but was able to score 100 points in a game nobody has ever actually seen on TV.
Marv Albert deserves to be respected for his talent and skill as an announcer for the NBA. Don't bring any of that other stuff into this. Have some class.

Actually turns out Phil was lowballing Kerr. Only wanted to give him 3 years $13 million, which is fair for a rookie head coach.

So Kerr went with less pressure to succeed, more money, a better current roster and closer to his family.
Why should this be surprise? I would think Marv didn't need to say shit to Kerr for him to make the decision.
While Berman reported that Jackson was in charge of negotiations, the New York Daily News' Frank Isola reported that Knicks owner James Dolan is to blame for what transpired, and added that a league executive said Jackson looked "like a beaten man already" at the draft combine in Chicago:
Kerr wanted to stay closer to his San Diego home but was also concerned about working for Garden chairman James Dolan, who undermined the potential hiring by originally offering Kerr a three-year deal. Kerr eventually received a five-year, $25 million deal from Golden State.
Although it had been known for months that Kerr was Jackson's primary target, Knicks ownership did not appear to support the hiring.
"When I saw Phil today he looked like a guy who had lost $60 million," said one league executive who was in Chicago. "Last summer he looked refreshed when I saw him. Now he really looks beaten down. He didn't look good."

Less pressure to succeed? The Warriors won 51 games last year. The Knicks won 37. Everyone says the Warriors should have won more, and Mark Jackson held them back. I think he should be reasonably expected to win at least 55 next year with that STACKED roster, and be a top 3 seed in the West.
Yea, no pressure.

So what happens if they only win 46 games and are a 7th seed? We'll be hearing "it's his first year give him time"
The only way Kerr is facing more pressure with GS than with the Knicks will be because of the salary he's making. It's quite clear Jackson was let go because of stuff off the court, not on.

Which is a good thing for a guy who had no coaching experience whatsoever. The long picture with a possible nice extension > not getting past the first round with a stacked team and what happens if I can't again next year?

Even if they lose Carmelo, all their big contracts will be gone for summer of 2015. Phil can do a complete retool if that happens.
