lol @ pippen being underrated, dude is in the hall of fame. also, people were saying that he was the number two player after jordan during his active eras, and even today people are saying that he would be a top 3 player behind lbj and kd. not saying he isnt that great, in fact i think a lot of the compliments are quite realistic, but dude isnt underrated at all.
underrated should be a guy like allen iverson, he went from the mvp that brought a team to the finals to a selfish chucker cancer in a short span of 10 years.
honestly i wonder if this is the route that kobe will go on in 50 years

Ray Allen never gets any real credit. He was an incredible player during his prime, and yet never gets talked about. Well never gets talked about, unless it is to try and discredit LeBron.

No credit for the 2008 title.

Unless you were talking about Kobe. I love Kobe for the most part. Great player, but when people put him up there with Shaq, and Magic, anf Jordan, it is just too ridiculous. He just isn't in that tier of greats. He is in the next tier with Bird, Duncan, LeBron, etc.

How are Shaq and Magic an entire TIER above Duncan, Bird, and Kobe? Lebron's not done, but throw him in there when his career's over.

I'll give you MJ, he's on a god tier with Kareem and Russell based on accomplishments.

But Shaq and Magic are not a whole level of greatness above Bird, Kobe, Duncan, and Lebron (when he's done). I'm especially surprised by the Shaq mention..aside from his MJ-level 3-year peak..his career has had several obvious lows.

I should've mentioned him. It was between him and Chris Mullin in my first post. I think Mullin peaked higher with a 5 year stretch of 26/5/4/2/1 on 60% TS. Injuries killed him after that though.

Both those guys were terrific players, and either of them at their prime would probably be the best 2 guard in the game today.

You're right. I forgot GMs pick players to get their stats, no win games.

This isn't football either. NBA players -- great NBA players -- can change things by themselves. Malone simply could never get it done. It's not like he made six Finals and lost everytime to the Bulls. He was losing to 44 win Warriors teams and 47 win Rockets teams.

Wade underrated???
Yes: he is perpetually hated on by Kobe and Bron stans on here, who will do anything to prove him only a lucky guy who had the good fortune to play with Shaq and Lebron. Even though they both joined him and not vice versa.

(though funnily enough, some of the Kobe stans who used to hate him have shifted somewhat to propping him up in an effort to drag down Lebron)

At his position, he nearly is.

AT HIS POSITION NEARLY IS.

NOT MJ better post player than Wilt,Kareem,Shaq
better 3 pt shooter than Allen,Miller,Nash
better playmaker than Magic,Stockton,Kidd or equal or close to
better slasher than Wade
better handles than AI
better shot blocker than Wade
better ft shooter than Allen

MJ is NOT the CLEAR Cut,Undisputed,"Perfect" GOAT as much as people want to believe and the media pushes it and where you can't say anything bad About him without getting hate and 6/6 same with praising another player

MJ is the GOAT AT HIS POSITION
MJ is a candidate and arguable GOAT but he's NOT the GOAT

The rankings for GOAT aren't a straight list bc there's no one clear cut better and that stands out

It's a pyramid

GOAT
Legendary
HOF Icon
Superstar
All star
good player
solid starters
role players
scrubs
Royce White,Bennett,Spanoulis,Outright crap

So in the Goat tier you have

Russell,Kareem,Wilt,Jordan,Magic,Bird,Oscar
where either can be argued as the GOaT an itll be fine
just no ones clear cut or above everbody

And Tony Parker.

He's rated about right. He's known for what he was. A great player who never won. He was always a tier below guys like Jordan, Bird, Magic in the 80s; and MJ, Ewing, Robinson, and Hakeem in the early 90s.

WillC

no one is more underrated than Mark Aguirre in the history of the game. He could have been Kobe if he paired with prime Shaq.

Although I disagree with the Kobe comment, I do agree that Mark Aguirre is incredibly underrated.

In 1988, Wayne Patterson ranked Aguirre as the 49th greatest player of all-time in the book Basketball's 100 Greatest Players. Clearly Patterson was getting carried away - Aguirre was only a few seasons into his professional career - but that was the level of excitement surrounding Aguirre at the time. Similar erroneous rankings occurred at the same stage of Tracy McGrady's career, for example.

But still, the fact remains, Aguirre was extremely good and yet many modern fans are completely unaware of him.

In terms of underrated all-time greats (clearly not from the last 25 years, as the OP requested), there are four that really stand out:

1) Oscar Robertson. He was correctly ranked right up until the turn of the century (when he was voted 2nd - after Michael Jordan - by the Associated Press as the greatest player of the 20th century). Then stats geeks came along and picked apart his triple-double legacy due to the faster pace of the game back in the 1960s (and yet nobody else came close to doing it - clearly it wasn't so easy). He's now ranked by some fans in the late teens, which is a joke.

2) Julius Erving. One of the few transitional players who completely changed the game. Not only that, but he was hugely popular - for good reason - and yet today is largely forgotten amongst the all-time greats. It's not easy to compare players from different eras, but it's safe to say that he's one of the 10 most important players in basketball history, which is why I feel he's underrated by fans today who overlook him in all-time lists based upon lack of championship rings (a factor of team success) and the like. Sometimes it's more relevant (and easier) to just a player based upon his impact on the sport.

3) Pete Maravich. See above.

4) Earl Monroe. See above.
