As if other NBA players in the 60's weren't capable of getting their head to rim level. The 6-6 Gus Johnson had a vertical very close to Joey Johnson (just google "The Nail"), and if Joey could get his chin over the rim, then there was a good chance that Gus was easily getting his had to rim level.
Of course, there was no real benefit to making soaring dunks in the 60's, either. In the very limited footage we have of Chamberlain, he could get his fingertips to nearly the top of the backboard, and there were eyewitness accounts of him doing so. Yet, he rarely put up an "ESPN" dunk on anyone. There was no need. Why waste energy, and risk injury with high-flying aerials, when an easy dunk or layin would accomplish the same result?
I'll take Bird or Magic any day of the week over Gerald Green or James White. And certainly over a Lavine whose brief COLLEGE career was nothing special.

Any rumors of amazing feats have been told and retold over the years. Several involve someone riding a horse into the bar and ordering a beer for themselves and one for the horse. One says someone rode a buffalo through the bar. But the most told involves Gus Johnson and his nail. Gun played for the Vandals in the 1962-63 season. He averaged 19 points and 20.3 rebounds. He was drafted in the second round of the NBA draft by the Baltimore Bullets and was runner up for rookie of the year.
When Johnson played at Idaho in 1963, he already had a reputation as a leaper of the highest order. One evening at the Corner Club, a local tavern on Main Street in Moscow, Johnson was requested by owner Herm Goetz to display his rare ability to the patrons. The Corner Club was a very modest establishment, converted from a white-stuccoed small chapel in the 1940s with hardwood floors and a beamed ceiling. From a standing start near the bar, Johnson touched a spot on a beam 11'6" (3.505 m) above the floor. This spot was ceremoniously marked with a nail by Goetz, who then proudly proclaimed that anyone who could duplicate the feat could drink for free. A 40-inch (1.016 m) diameter circle was painted on the floor, and both feet had to start inside the circle to ensure a standing start. A full 23 years went by with many attempts at Gus Johnson's Nail, including Bill Walton in the summer of 1984, but there were no successes.
That was until 1986, when the College of Southern Idaho basketball team from Twin Falls stopped in town in January on their way to a game against NIC in Coeur d'Alene. Joey Johnson, a younger brother of then NBA star Dennis Johnson, was brought into the Corner Club for a try. The 6'3" (1.905 m) guard had a 48" (1.219 m) vertical leap and could put his chin on a basketball rim (10 feet (3.048 m)) with a running start.
Johnson laced up his shoes and touched the nail on his first try but was disqualified because he did not start with both feet inside the 40-inch circle. The next attempt came from a legal static start but was just a bit short. On his third try, Johnson grabbed and bent the legendary nail, a landmark event in Vandal sports history. Goetz pulled the nail out of the beam and pounded it back in, a half inch (13 mm) higher

The world record dunk today is 12'0" and it's held by a 6'5" man with a 52" vertical, care to explain how he's able to dunk on a rim 5" higher with the same exact alleged vertical?
I find it hilarious how you don't believe the things you see from current athletes, but will take some 30+ year old text as gospel.

Hmmm ... 6-3" compared to 6'5. And 11'7 compared to 11'9. Now it makes perfect sense. So I guess it was obvious that he had a 52" vertical, and by extension, the 6-6 Gus Johnson's was probably around 48"...back in the early 60's.
Furthermore, while Gus was clearly a great player, how come he wasn't routinely putting up 30-20 seasons in the 60's? I guess those short, non-athletic white guys must have known something about defense back in the day.

This is pitiful, Gary Flowers touched 11'11" on his no step vert, he's 6'7" and had a 40" vertical. You really have no idea how incredibly high a 48" vertical is, let alone a 52" vert.

First of all, just GOOGLE ASU's Joey Johnson! There are DOZENS of articles on his leaping ability (maybe hundreds.) It is not ME making anything up, but rather, MANY other's, including reporters for SI and ESPN.
As for posting video's of these events, I tell you what, why don't YOU post YOUR video collection of him NOT accomplishing those feats, ok?
And while you are at it, please post the video of Wilt's 100 point game, Babe Ruth's 60th homerun, and the George Washington chopping down a cherry tree. After all, since they have been acknowledged, VIDEO FOOTAGE must exist, right?

Oh of course. After all, Chamberlain only had FOUR 30+ ppg - 20+ rpg post-seasons, and EIGHT 20-20's. You can find a TON of other NBA players who accomplished that feat, right? And the list is probably endless of players who had FOUR 50+ point post-season games, THREE of which came in MUST-WIN games. And everyone in the 60's was putting up 30-30- .555 FG% series (and against a player like Russell no less.) THIRTEEN post-seasons of 20+ rpg? Common. FOUR playoff series of 37 ppg, 37 ppg, 39 ppg and 39 ppg? There are bench-warmers in today's NBA putting up those numbers. A 23 ppg, 24 rpg, .625 FG% seven game Finals, which included a MUST WIN game of 45 points and 27 rebounds? Hilarious, Zach Lavine could do that blind-folded.
Oh, and this "choker" also played in 23 MUST WIN games, and could only average 31.1 ppg (which is less than MJ's 31.3 ppg and Lebron's 31.9 ppg...and NO ONE ELSE's BTW), along with 26.4 rpg and on a .540 FG% in post-seasons that shot less than .440 in that same span.
Yep...I can't wait for Lavine to shatter all of those marks. I tell you what...let's revisit this topic in say, five years, and we will see who owes whom an apology, shall we?

Yeah, Kareem sure wouldn't be worth a sh*t in today's NBA, either. That clown would have been owned by Hakeem had they ever played against each other. And we know that Hakeem couldn't hold Shaq's jock. And let's be honest here...a peak Shaq would be even less of a player than Roy Hibbert in today's NBA.
