Overrated by fans because of his flashy style of play. At no point was he actually a superstar, but he is commonly referred to as a superstar that carried the 76ers to the finals (which is pure BS as well).

Was fun to watch at times, but very overrated. Think Kobe Bryant, only a lot less efficient, which is REALLY saying something. :oldlol:
But then again Iverson never got to play with a prime Shaq. Makes me wonder how people would view Kobe's career if he had to spend it on horrible teams in Philly.

Actually, i think he mighta been in his prime in 2005 so i think u did see it.
His team in 2005 was just a mess though with no identity.
In 2001, he had a great defensive team with solid role players who knew their roles. And they had Mutombo and a borderline all-star in Aaron Mckie.

AI was basically one of the greatest scoring players under 6"3 in NBA history. Ridiculously quick and explosive can get in lane at will. Would of been great on a team that had some other options as He carried too much of a scoring burden by himself and forced shots at times. Decent passer and defender but not known for it. what he was known for getting his shot of against bigger defenders cause he was Crafty but his handles and speed was his trademark.

Didn't see him play either considering his prime was over a decade ago but he is very underrated IMO. When he finally got good teammates, in 2007, an out of athletic prime Allen Iverson shot 45% from the field and scored 26 PPG. If he had better teammates throughout his career he would have put up stats that mirrored Kobe, if not better.

A 6'1 165 lb player won MVP over Shaq and Kobe.
Just let that sink in a minute to understand exactly how good this guy was. If he actually had a team around him, his shot % would have been on par with Kobe's.

Iverson was one of the worst MVPs ever. Shaq easily should have been MVP.

One of the least efficient superstars in the history of the game, but people will always romanticize about him because of his flashy play.

This. Only reason Shaq didn't get more MVP's is because he was lazy and took too much time off during the regular season.

His ability to drive and actually get his shot off for his size was what made him impressive and a superstar to some.
He wasn't just a shooter, nor did he needed to just rely on shooting to score.
All star level passing ability for a PG I would say, not super star in terms of passing.
Players/teams underrated him because of how ball dominant as well as how many shots he took a game, which meant your teams scoring percentage was going to be heavily dictated by him. And I can't say that when he scored, it nessecarily helped open up his teammates because of his size.
He also averaged 8-10 FTs a game.

Like Westbrook, Harden, etc. a high numbers, high usage, low efficiency guard. Comparing either of those two to him is sacrilege, but that's the category of players he was in.

great handles, decent court vision, average jump shooter. He had the potential but he lacked the drive to be a champion. too much chucking. Took 1000+ jumpers in a season while shooting under 30% on them.

Very quick and agile, was amazing at getting separation and his shot off over taller players. Was tough as hell, with a huge heart and energy. Was very fast on the lanes (defensively).
To his critics....
He was in ways a 6'0 version of Kobe.
If you gave AI 6 more inches he'd be a better Kobe.
The reason his % was so low, is because the defense concentrated on him and he was always getting double and tripled teamed. Was always guarded by players taller than he was *NOTE: He was smaller than 6'0, which meant 99% of players guarding him were taller*.
He was always a threat.

No, the reason his FG% was so low is because he was incredibly erratic. There are high efficiency superstars and low efficiency superstars. He was a low efficiency superstar. All superstars face that kind of defensive attention. High efficiency superstars are just better at dealing with it (and better, period).
AI was the PG version of Melo or any other chucker.
If you could have fused AI's scoring with Chris Paul's everything else, now that would be an all-time great player.

extremely overrated. one of the worst chuckers ever. had low bball IQ.
most of the people who admired his game was because he was a short guy with alot of skills and played with alot of heart. he was also loved because he ushered in the sort of thug mentality that plagued the league during his time. so he was a big cultural icon. thats nice an all, but when it comes to playing a winning brand of basketball, he was *hit.

I didn't like him but the man had heart and was fearless. He took a lotta hits, being the littlest guy in the league will do that to ya. People will say he was inefficient, but his teams usually thrived on him attacking. He played on defensive minded teams. He had a lotta clashes with Larry Brown, but for the most part made that marriage work because they went to the Finals and actually dealt the Lakers their only loss that playoffs. Here's to AI, at the time the most electrifying player in the sport

Their are a bunch of great players who never took their team to a finals as the absolute clear cut best player on the team.
Gervan never did it.

he made the finals in the pathetic east. and it wasnt just him that was on the team. they had the sixth man of the year, a COY, and the DPOY. beating the lakers that one game was a highlight. but just like alot of streak scorers, if they get going, aint noone stopping them. a guy with those skills will have those types of games every once in a while and that was one of them. still doesnt mean they know how to play winning ball.
