So I'm sitting indoors like a weird hermit on a beautiful Memorial Day watching the original Karate Kid on the ABC Family Channel. Someone needs to explain to me why Mr. Miyagi is viewed as some paradigm of wisdom and a great teacher?

The dude was clearly a dangerous, drunken, belligerent sociopath. He tricked a poor gullible teenager into doing all of his menial chores under the guise of teaching him karate. Wax on, wax off? F*ck off you old drunk shyster.

He was also the worst role model possible. Had the kid driving with no license, drinking sake even though he was underage.

Just a terrible, terrible human being and an awful influence.

Thoughts?

You are easily offended.

Miyagi was an old school type of character. He was a war veteran and that cool dude that lets you do things.

Taught karate with real world applications like painting fences and washing cars. He broke down karate in its simplest form to teach an weak teen.

The kid was a better person after meeting him. He probably would've been a gang banger if he didn't meet Miyagi

He was a drunk shyster who got free labor from a dumb kid. Plied him with booze and cars. Real questionable character.

Kind of guy you warn your kids about.

Not really free loading because he was exchanging his lessons for work.

Dude just lied about Daniel being a black belt, throwing him in there with the lions. Then he proceeds to STEAL an actual black belt out of someone else's gym bag :facepalm

Miyagi's the worst.

Things weren't so black and white in the 80s, young man. Han Solo, Mouth from goonies, Miyagi. You left out that he was a war criminal too

There was no way LaRusso would have fit in the Cobra Kai. Miyagi saved his sorry ass.

And a war criminal too...

Spare me your cheesy moral relativism. How would you feel if some shady alcoholic forced your child into slave labor while having him engage in criminal activity (underage drinking, driving without a license, stealing, etc)?

If I was a single mother from Jersey (which I am) who had just moved to some Point Break hitler youth town in SoCal and my son was being bullied by the aryan all-stars, I would welcome Miyagi's lessons in discipline, self defense, and humility.

If I was a teenager (which I am) and all i had to do was paint a fence and wax a car to get a ride this cherry?

Technically speaking, you are correct.

Miyagi was badass. His teaching was unorthodox but that's what made it great. He focused on the mental aspect of developing the little beta instead of just drilling him with karate training which the beta would have probably broke down and been overwhelmed.

Not only that he was a father figure.
