View Full Version : Do you consider Norris Cole a elite perimeter defender?

I think so...In a era where the rules make it nearly impossible to keep your man in front of you he does a great job... He has great foot speed, doesn't commit a lot of fouls, can check bigger players, is a monster in pick and roll defense and he has great defensive awareness
I think giving a starting role on any team he would be an defensive all-nba selection

Norris Cole is pretty damn good, one of the best backup PGs in the league.
but... No, not at all. Andre Iguodala, Tony Allen, Avery Bradley, those are the type of players that are "elite" perimeter defenders.

Tony Parker is the only player he can't guard
Not big enough. No. Rarely gets torched though.

If he wins this year, 3 rings in his third season. He's a very very good reserve to have, but if you wanna win he can't be your starting guard

He is like a little pitbull, very aggressive on defense, always hounding his man and chasing them around multiple screens. Few PGs torch him, he only has issues vs Westbrook/Parker. I still remember him stealing Kyrie's cookies. :lol

Cole is a great perimeter defender. One of the best players in the league at staying in front of his man.
Saying that though, he is too small to be considered great overall on defense. He can guard the 1 or even the 2 in some occasions, but only against bigger guys who don't really know how to use their size down low. It's why you saw him checking Lance. Lance will blow by you and if you're on his hip, he's impossible to defend, but he won't kill you down low.
Cole is the perfect player to put on a bigger SG who is burning your SG on defense with his speed. If they can play in the post, don't bother.

This, I've always thought of him as another Patrick Beverley minus the attitude and not quite as good.

I would say he is elite for a pg but only because every pg in the league sucks at playing D.

Cole is a very good defender but is very inconsistent.
He's not big so he's overly aggressive to compensate for it which works but other times his aggressiveness becomes a detriment and he picks up a lot of quick fouls or gets burned bc he's so overly aggressive and isn't big.
I mean if you combined Chalmers's length and size, strength with Cole's unrelenting pressure and quick footspeed and aggressiveness you'd have a great defender who could lock down star players and wear everybody out
and would be extremely difficult to score against but
due to Cole's size it's a hit or miss depending on the player and how closely the game is officiated and how much contact is allowed.
Im so nba'd out

What new modern "STAR" actually plays any d.
The so called new stars either have o or d.
Irving,Harden,Curry,George,Davis
no d or no o
or avg at Best on the other side

Only stars that are multi-dimensional but also play actual defense are Lebron, Wade and Westbrook. Especially in the playoffs. Though they may get burned a few times, when they are focused they can wreck havoc on D. No surprise all of them are athletic freaks with great strength, speed and inhuman wingspans. And each one is tough mentally and possesses unmatched competitiveness.
Playing elite defense is in part about athleticism, but you can't be born with the effort, nor can it be taught. It's the mindset.

exactly some of the current made stars either have it or put in effort
The new Stars don't give a crap about d,or give the laziest effort or just suck at it due to never working on it
Irving,Curry,Harden---Defense? and it's not like they aren't athletic or cant
They dont even bother improving it or caring enough

You haven't watched any GSW games for absolute sh*t if you think Curry hasn't been improving on the defensive end.

I think it's because they don't really care about winning championships or competing too hard. They are already millionaires, they already "made it" in life. Losing some pointless basketball game is irrelevant to them. You can tell just by the look in their eye when they lose. When Westbrook loses a tough game he played hard for 40+ minutes you can see how pissed he gets, his competitive spirit is unmatched. These other guys are out on the court laughing and shit like nothing happened.
Harden just cares about partying with ho's and strippers and blowing his money. Howard cares about how many kids he can father from 20+ different women. Irving is all flash that just tries to put on a show with his fancy handles and style. Curry just out there chucking 3s trying to make the crowd explode.
There are a few PROFESSIONAL basketball players that care about their legacy. Most of the new breed are young guys that grew up on ESPN and just want to be part of the highlights.

Only player I have seen be able to guard Tony Parker is Russell Westbrook. He made Parker use screens everytime because he couldn't get past him without it.
