He says he's #1, the modern day picasso, and had a huge influence on pop culture.
Do you agree?
To me hes like Kobe. Consistentency/longevity, but not quite #1.

I cant really put a number to it. I ask myself if hes just "better" than Black Thought, common, or maybe even a guy like J-Live and I suppose id really start expanding the list of people "better".
Then I listen to Can I live...or the wordplay on Already Home...or even a more radio friendly song like Girls Girls Girls....
Pharoah Monch has one of my favorite flows and his lyrics are wild...
I dont know if im gonna still be listening to Desire or What t is in 40 years.
If im alive im gonna play Momma Loves Me.
So I dont know how to rank that.
Not the #1 rapper in any technical way. High on the list. But not #1.
Hes a better song maker than a lot of equal rappers though.

Top 5.
Reasonable Doubt alone puts him there.

I see shit like this:
http://youtu.be/hKWfZjG0T7w?t=1m45s
And my respect for his ability rises. hears a beat for the first time....nods for a few minutes...then half freestyles a near classic mumbling getting his words together.
Having spent a little time in studios with people recording...he makes it look so easy.
Reminded of Daz explaining how Snoop made Tha Shiznit. just walked in and heard the beat....asked for a mic and rapped or 10 minutes off the top then they cut it down into one of his best songs.
He repeated himself spelling his name and all like he always did but the flow...the personality...there is more to rap than intricate lyrics.
But Jay has those too.
Hes earned reapect.

Jay-Z has put out a lot of garbage too. He is quite talented because of his ability to think of raps without writing them down but the drawbacks are a lot of garbage songs.
I rank him below Ja Rule and Little Wayne.

The Blueprint might be the most overrated rap album of all time IMO.

Well, your argument for Jay Z being great was that we have to respect his hustle. I respect it. I respect Biebs hustle too. Bieber is more popular than Jay Z, will end up with more money than him, and has a finer girl than Jay does. I'm not saying I like Bieber's music. I just respect his hustle more than I respect Jay's. Just because Bieber's a big name, that doesn't mean he's one of the most talented ever in his genre. The same goes for Jay.

Jay-Z will never be the #1 rapper in the world as long as Nas is alive. Jay-Z cried after hearing ether and admitted Nas won but said it made him stronger.

He's outside of my top 5 but definitely top 10. Too many inexcusable moments for him to be inside that 5 spot.

He had some rough moments early on(post Reasonable Doubt of course) and some of the radio songs are terrible, but overall he has had an elite career. Any album from The Blueprint on is at least solid and potentially special. Kingdom Come and Blueprint 3 are average, but at the same time you can listen to them all the way through and enjoy 'em. Blueprint, Blueprint 2, The Black Album, Holy Grail and American Gangster are all great albums and he gets props for being part of Watch the Throne.
