Not just because it has been 20 years since 1994, but it really as the best time for Hip-Hop.
1994 was officially the start of a new era and the end of what we now know as the Golden Age of Hip-Hop. Oldies like Hammer (Pumps and a Bump) Big Daddy Kane (Show & Prove), KRS-One (Sound of da Police), Heavy D (Nuttin' But Love), De La Soul (Breakdown), Queen Latifah (Unity) Salt-N-Pepa, 2 Live Crew, Public Enemy, Erick Sermon ect were still around and relevant. Gang Starr and A Tribe Called Quest were still racking out hits like it was 1990.
Alternative Hip-Hop (the original back packers) like Del the Funky Homosapien. Common's I Used to love H.E.R. is considered the greatest Hip-Hop song ever by many. The Fugees dropped Blunted on Reality that year. 93 Til Infinity by Souls of Mischief came out the tail end of 93.
Over on the West Coast, NWA's Ice Cube, Eazy E and Dr. Dre's cronie Snoop Doggy Dog had albums released in late 93. Coolio, MC Eiht, Spice 1, E-40, Warren G, Rappin 4-Tay all released albums that year. Young Master P also in the West at this times charted for the first time. Tupac hit with his group Thug Life and he was also hit with some bullets in a NYC recording studio. This was the beginning of the East Coast/West Coast beef.
Speaking of P, he'd migrate to the south by the next year. Scarface's The Diary takes home best album from the South in 94. Outkast made their debut and a close second behind Face. 8Ball & MJG and UGK put out charting albums also.
The Mid-West found a hit with Eazy E's discovery Bone Thugs N Harmony. Jermaine Dupri found a young lady named Da Brat who hit big.
Over on the East, we got Nas and Biggie who released 2 of the greatest albums of All-Time. Wu Tang and Black Moon's album were released in late 93. But Method Man Tical was a 94 release. His buddy Redman dropped that year as did his buddy Keith Murry's The Most Beautufullest Thing In The World. Shook Ones was released as a single December 30 1994 by Mobb Deep.
1994 gave us some of the best One hit Wonders also. Like Ahmad's Back In The Day, Domino's Getto Jam, Craig Mack' Flava in ya Ear. Shyheim's On and On, Pistol Grip Pump, Afro Puff and of course the greatest song of all-time "TOOSTEE ROLL"
With Golden Age Hip-Hop coming to an end, so did New Jack Swing. On the RnB side, we had top albums from R. Kelly (12 Play) and his up and coming artist Aaliyah, Mary J Blidge, Jodeci, TLC, BLACKstreet and Brandy. Most of these albums featured guest rappers like Redman, Method Man andErick Sermon.
Athletes were gettin at it too. Shaq with Fu-Schnickens in What's Up Doc, Deon Sanders with MC Hammer label. Dana Barros released a single that year.
Hip-Hop was making it's mark on both the tube and big screen. The Aresnio Hall Show and In Living Color were still breaking acts in the beginning of 94 before they were both canceled later that year. Rappers like Fresh Prince and Queen Latifah had their own sitcoms. Martin Lawrence had hit shows on Fox and HBO Def Comedy Jam, he was the former host (now Joe Torry.) On the big screen Joe Torry had a cameo in Kid N' Play's House Party III. Tupac was in Above the Rim. Hip-Hop soundtracks were featured on films like A Low Down Dirty Shame and Blackman.
