crazy thing was you could tell by the middle of the 2nd day something bad was going to go down.

It was easily the poorest run event I have ever been to.

shit was on an abandoned Air Force base so there was no cover from the oppressive heat

The price gouging was unbelievable. ex: $5 for 8oz bottles of water by the 3rd day

You weren't allowed to bring in your own food/water to the campgrounds and they would literally search through all your shit and throw away anything you tried to bring in that they found. This wasn't the typical open our bag and glance search either. I saw several people have entire bags dumped out and one guy was forced to unfold his tent so they could make sure nothing was wrapped inside.

The cash machines ran out of money by the start of day 2 so unless you wanted to waste half a day taking the bus into the tiny ass town you were shit out of luck.

There were nowhere near enough toilets and they were only cleaned once a day so it was extremely hard to find one that wasn't overflowing with shit. Oh and toiler paper? :lol Unless you had your own you were (pardon the pun) shit out of luck.

The free water lines broke so you were forced to pay the venders for the marked up water.

Broken water lines caused a massive flood by a huge section of portable toilets creating a huge river of shit that was impossible to avoid if you wanted to get to the East stage.

The lack of working water also made it impossible to shower at the wash stations which sucked b/c there was a good chance of getting hit by the shit mud.

Surrounding the base was a 12 foot wall that I swear looked like something you'd see at a concentration camp. There were only a few small entrances and b/c of this the firetrucks could not get in to put out any of the fires early on.

Also, MTV blaming Limp Bizkit for the beginning of the the violence was total bullshit. People were tearing shit up, throwing plastic bottles full of liquid into crowds, and starting massive mosh pits that you would get sucked into regardless of if you wanted to partake long before they played the song "Break Stuff".

The other thing is the organizers and the way they responded to the fires is why everything went nuts.

Here's the deal.

On the 3rd day there were people passing out what they were calling peace candles. This had to be something that was cleared b/c there were a shitload of people handing them out. No way they were able to smuggle them in with the way searches were going at the entrances.

Anyway, as the day went on, people started forming campfire like circles around groups of candles. These gradually got bigger and turned into small campfires. Now, I fully admit a few of the fires were a little too big and there were a few crazy asses jumping over them in a Lord of the Flies like scene. But for the most part, everything was benign.

All through the weekend there was buzz about a secret band finishing the show. Most people thought it would be Aerosmith b/c they had been prominently featured as one of the bands that would play to the point that they are listed as a headliner on the tickets I still have. For some reason they were taken off the lineup at the last minute and the organizers didn't really let anyone know why.

Anyway, the Chilli Peppers were the last band of the weekend and they finished off their set with "Fire". Again, unlike what MTV reported, the small fires had been burning all day and did not start or spread b/c of the RHCP. As the Peppers finished there was an announcement over the loudspeaker that told everyone to hang around for a "special performance."

People were pumped and the rumors of what would happen were going crazy. Again, many thought Aerosmith woudl show while others said it was going to be a crazy super jam.

Instead, after 30 minutes of waiting, they started to play a recording of Jimmy Hendrix doing the National Anthem. This went on for 3 or 4 minutes and then they cut it off midway through and said the concert was over, time to go home. People got pissed and started throwing shit.

But what everyone didn't know was at the same time they started to attack the stage storm trooper like riot squads were being brought in. These dudes formed a huge ass line and started in on the crowd. They started beating people indiscriminately. When this started the people went rage mode and started fighting back, attacking merch booths, stealing whatever wasn't locked up, spreading fires, and just acting f-ing crazy. I saw a Mercedes Benz get flipped over and set on fire. That was when me and my friends decided it was time to get the **** back the campgrounds.

Shit was nuts and I put a shitload of the blame on the organizers who tired to squeeze blood from a stone due to extreme greed.
